The Big 12 screwed up. They went panic shopping when Texas and Oklahoma left. What would they rather have right now 4 g5 schools that noone else was going to try to sweep in and take anytime soon or 4 other open spots to offer whoever is left out of the Big Ten SEC expansion fest from the Pac 12, and ACC? If they held pat then maybe we would have a Pac 12 BIG 12 ACC merger .. but no room now. IMO The Big Ten is taking 2 more from the Pac 12 and Notre Dame and a handful more from the ACC to get to 24 and the SEC takes a few but stops at 20.

I, .like you, feel the same way. He does not mention the big losers. These are Oregon State, Utah, Colorado, and eventually the ACC teams not invited to the SEC, big 12 teams not poached, etc.. These teams now have no big games to play since they are relegated to baby ball. How full are the stadiums of non power five schools? Not very, since they are not in a power 5 conference. Now many more teams will left out in the cold since they are not be in the power 2. And with these teams more or less kicked out of the sport, the fans of these schools lose interest in college football in general, since they don't have a team anymore. Graduates of Washington State have "no dog in the race" anymore. Like consider soccer, where the top teams wanted to form their own league. The fans hated it, even the fans of teams who would leave for the exclusive league. A better idea is to just have a larger playoff format as in soccer and all other college sports and a smaller regular season as is done in basketball. Then we would get those big games and a schedule of traditional rivals where lots of schools have a shot of going far. A team would have to "earn" its way to big games, rather than having it guaranteed to them, or taken away from them, regardless of what they do on the field. Imagine a playoff football format that would have given that undefeated Boise State team a chance. With the super conference idea, we have the opposite. All but 36 teams are eliminated before the first game. And as far as watching a good game, why would an NC state fan bother to watch Ohio State versus Alabama. The quality is low compared to the NFL or even the Canadian league. College football grows when we expand the base of people with a stake. Include USF into the mix, and then we gain the people from that school as fans of college football. Don't go the opposite direction.

When the legacy B1G teams' fans travel out to the westcoast in the tens of thousands to see their teams play, both UCLA and USC will have to fire up their fanbases, and I think they will. And the quality of B1G opponents as you stated will be the impetus for bringing back the crowds. USC will do well this year and beyond, regardless because of Riley and his recruiting, but UCLA will take a little longer. And the media experts are talking as though both schools by bringing in the LA television market, could boost the imminent deal with Fox from ~ $1B/year to significantly >>> $1B, so the payouts for each team post-LA-schools' addition could be closer to $100m/year.

CF needs two 32 team conferences, with teams promoted and relegated based on performance. That's the path forward. Schedules must be created in a non-biased manner. A seaon should be set up so that any team that wins all the gamesthey are scheduled, wins the championship. Polls should serve nothing more than a novelty. Playoffs have to be based on standings. I'm not sure why these teams have to be connected to universities anymore, but that's fine if schools thinks it helps them. If CF does this, it will feed a ton of athletes to the NFL and XFL once they have used up their eligibility. Maybe call the new league, College Football Academy. You get four years to prove your skills.

The relegation thing would never work in the US in either college or pro sports for a lot of reasons, but the main one is investment. My home town is about to help our NFL team build a $2+ billion stadium. The team's been good for the last few years but before that they were terrible. In college football there are teams that haven't been good for the last few years like Texas or Tennessee or USC who have put big big money into their sports programs, and there's no way the fans or the even the state governments would allow them to be relegated.

Tradition you say, Colin? When the Los Angeles schools leave that is not only the end of the PAC-12, but it is the end of college athletics, with the subsidy model for Olympic sports and the student athlete concept in general. This is all about money, and green talks loud. The players are going to say, "we have full-time jobs while administrators have $ million dollar salaries. We have NIL, now we want more." So at the very least these football players will become semi-professionals, distinctly different than the rest of the student body. Good Bye to College Athletics.

Title lX ensures that the "minor" (subsidized) sports are not going away, not within the BigTen and SEC anyway. BigTen teams will be earning roughly 3X what the PAC12 teams are getting from their TV contract. That's why UCLA and USC are leaving. Some winnowing out is in order because if they were all to stay in the PAC12, their lower revenue makes them susceptible to having their best coaches poached and top athletes/recruits lured away by schools with more money to work with. The PAC12 has been slowly sliding toward mediocrity, and NIL will accelerate that unless you have some very rich alumni (like Miami) that are willing to pay rising high school seniors $10 million to sign with their school. However, the current unrestrained NIL cannot go on for very long without some implosions.
@jacksonj3082
@jacksonj3082 2 года назад
@@53toddk you make perfect sense. Wondering if the revenue sharing could have been based on actual ratings to a degree - that say the Big 10 schools get 60-70% and the Pac 12 schools get the balance, and then have an incentive pay-out based on TV ratings if game is televise - with both conferences transitioning to the same network Fox, ESPN, or CBS. I want to believe that there could have been some mathematical way to keep the popular schools happy and kept both conferences as is - say a % based on available viewers and actual viewers, etc etc. Then the school getting the better viewership get a bigger piece of the pie most likely Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn St, USC, and UCLA. The Rose Bowl might never be the same.
@53toddk
@53toddk 2 года назад
@@jacksonj3082 I believe that all conference members equally share total annual TV revenues generated by their conference, and I expect this will continue with the addition of USC & UCLA. Doing it game by game based on TV ratings would be tedious, nor would I favor this. Penn State has a lot of alumni living in the New York metro, but you don't try to calculate what percentage of the New York TV viewers are Rutgers or PSU fans. If, for example, Michigan were to receive 75% of the revenue generated by a game vs. Northwestern and 65% when playing Indiana, then you would hear some grumbling from schools getting the short end of the stick. This helps keep the Northwestern and Wake Forest athletic departments from sinking into a financial abyss, and it is tough for them anyway even when this is divvied-up equally. On the other hand, I believe the big guys like Michigan get to keep a high (but slightly variable) percentage of revenue generated from ticket sales, concessions, parking, and merchandise for each game. There has to be a significant reward for good performance on these metrics, and if Northwestern has fewer ticket sales, etc. for their home games they have to live with that. Visiting teams get a pre-determined payout per game regardless of attendance, etc. However, I could be wrong about this, these are simply my understandings of how this stuff works. If I'm wrong I hope someone corrects me.

USC fan here and it doesn’t make sense that USC was making the same money as the smaller PAC 12 schools when they were driving the revenue much more. This move just made too much sense. If USC wants to compete with SEC or Big Ten teams for playoff spots they were bound to have to join one of the conferences cause making it from the PAC was gonna be extremely tough. Also, USC needs more money for upgrades to the facilities and they will be making much more with the Big Ten. Just look at Maryland who went from the ACC to Big Ten and how that allowed them to upgrade their facilities recently. I do wonder if the PAC would combine with the Big 12 or something in the future and also what other PAC schools may move out of the conference in the near future too.
