Wow. Join us as we witness the incredible Joey Alexander improvise on a blues in F with the Wynton Marsalis Sextet. He was only 12(!!!) years old at the time. Link to the original video: • Joey Alexander feat. W...
I’ve seen Joey play many times and it is always a different sonic experience, always creative, alive, spontaneous. There is another video when he was 10 and he plays with an orchestra -a Duke Ellington number. And the band members literally roll their eyes when the band leader announces this kid is going to play. You can see their disbelief grow. Joey was virtually unknown then.
Joey is amazing!! I truly think that he's some great jazz piano legend reincarnated. He just has a feel for it that can't be taught. You could practice your heart out for decades and still not get where he is. Outta this world!!
Wynton Marsalis is probably the first serious jazz musician to also play proper symphonic trumpet with major orchestras. Total style switch. Plus his whole family is a traditional New Orleans jazz family.
I was so glad to see this vid - to know there are other people that appreciate just how special Joey is. He electrifies me, like the first time I heard Coltrane or Miles’ music.
Joey, among other things, has a Balinese advantage. His fingers are long and supple. I have never seen him play anything but a standard sized keyboard, even at 8 years old. Could be mistaken though. As far as his jazz language goes, I think he understood it when he first heard it which may have been before he was born since it came in the form of his parents record collection. He was self-taught and when he was 6 he was given a tiny electronic by his father. From that time he began to reproduce pieces by Monk & Coltrane on his own.
Seems like it was a good idea to share this live... i was so impressed about his performance at Marciac, i recorded all the stream on my comp only to share THIS. Supposed to be "Wynton Marsalis feat. Joey" but clearly this "kid" was THE guy, so i wrote wynton marsalis as featuring ahaha.
A small plunger is a classic mute tool for trumpet. Trombones use the big one. Sometimes a standard metal mute (not a harmon) is in the bell and then the plunger on top.

Very common for trumpet players to use a plunger as a mute. Also, when you talked about how he communicates with the other musicians.. the fellow musicians said he doesn't like to wear headphones in the recording studio because he needs to feed off of what the other guys are playing.
For I think you might find this interview quite interesting: Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts and Stanley Crouch interview (1992) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gpo56tzHsNg.html This is for the first time I get the confirmation that it is a lot of improvisation in jazz music, while there is structure also, The interview makes it more clear in the first minutes when jazz is defined from each one's perspective.
Wynton Marsalis on Trumpet with the Mute is a well known Giant in Jazz. I'm just wondering why he would be considered FUNNY. Is Oscar Peterson FUNNY? Just asking.
I hit 'like' before I found out you two were going to stop the vid and talk over the performance, also, turn the volume up on the vid, and turn your voices down, I retract my 'thumbs up'...
Guy on the left knows too little man...can't even tell that it's improv. I'm not a musician just a jazz lover and even I can tell it's improvised, from how he picks up the melody being played, how it starts tentative and becomes intense when he got in the groove, how he watches the drummer for cues, etc. Guy has never seen a plunger mute. Doesn't know who Wynton Marsalis is. SMH
