I am amazed at the rude comments, we should be thankful for this marvelous talent while we still have him.....and......forget about the stupid little differences between a "real" Hammond and the clones....the main thing is everything has it's own sound and it's the music that matters..!
I have come back to this countless times over the years. Such a HUGE sound! RIP Joey, I will never forget watching you play a Miles-Style trumpet solo in your left hand, while comping on the organ and EP with the right...AMAZING!
Joey's a great soul and world class player, what a groove! Apart from that I'm disgusted to read comments here where people are bashing the man for his physical appearence. That small and mean-mindedness just hurts people who haven't done anything to deserve it. You neither have to write down everything you think about nor do you have to spread these thoughts publicly! People who really care know how to approach certain topics!
Great organ sounds, really enjoyed listening. I also see many comments on here about original Hammonds and how wonderful they're supposed to be well I've had many and they're unreliable, heavy, noisy and nackered thank goodness for this new technology. There's also great deal of back biting like a pit of vipers. Lighten up folks! music is meant to be fun, not a religion.
Thanks for letting me in on this. I can look at jazz organ in a whole new way. Back in the 80's I learned "Chords on The Left Hand!" and "Circle of fith's on the foot!" I know, now, why I never sounded like Joey. Anyway, I love this music. Some of you commenting have really taught me some stuff I didn't know, and made me enjoy this organ jazz in a whole new way. Thanks--and thanks to Mr. Defrancesco for being the best!
Not a dumb question! His left foot is playing the bassline, his right foot controlling sustain, his left hand used mainly to comp his left hand playing solo+melody. :) Have a nice day!
I have watched that left hand play what--at times--I thought looked like a bass line. I mostly play chords with the left hand. This being revealed, he's still a fav. Now, Barbara Dennerlein... Oh, she's using the foot!
He is indeed using hs left foot, but not like you might think. Jazz organists, as a rule, play most basslines with the left hand, using a registration of 838000000 or similar. The left foot then taps stacatto notes on the pedals for a "thump" to augment what the left hand is doing and give the bass a punchy attack. As the pedal notes are so short, they are heard more as a 'thump' than a particular tone. They can and do play complete bass lines on the pedals at times when the song calls for it.
@patsaxon I played a top of the line Roland Atelier a week or so ago, along with all sorts of big name instruments - in recording terms it's called 'A-B' ing. When you play them yourself lots of things become apparent, particularly to do with the way you respond to the instrument playing-wise. When I had only 5 minutes left it was the Atelier I wanted to play! If you think about it the B3 was Hammond's response to all the organs preceding it. Welcome all you new kids on the block!
in the beginning you can see he's tapping on just one pedal, while you can obviously hear the bass walking. sometime he does take over the bass with his feet to play with 2 hands on one manual. maybe there's a switch on this organs to switch between pedals and lower-manual-bass very fast.,
The Cx-3000 has the XM1 tonewheel drawbar system. the elegante has new Vase system in it. I would love to see Joey play on the all new Xh-272 organ. Just imagine what he would sound like.
@keyborganUK Ah, so basically the KeyB is the U.S. version of the Diversi? Because I know for a fact I read in an interview of Francesco in "Keyboard" magazine he was talking about the Diversi organ and the motion sound speakers (that are also here in this video). He liked the organ so much, that he wanted to buy-in the company. If this is basically the same organ just re-branded and marketed in the U.S., then it makes sense.
Really? How did you find this out? His feet seem so insync with the bass. Maybe he's doing it because we can see his feet. I played organ in a lounge, and that's how I did it. I couldn't wear shoes when I played though.
Have any of you actually played the Key B? It is a very satisfying instrument to play, I have 3 real Hammonds 2 x A100 & Leslies that I hire out to big concerts, and my own C3 & Leslie. having serviced Hammonds for at least 30 years, I can say that I really know the instrument. Of all the Hammond wannabees, the Key B is a real joy. The recording you are hearing does not capture its character. I would own a Key B in a flash if I needed a clonewheel.
This is not the home organ model. the home organ model is the new A-405 organ. it is meant for home beucase of its interanl speakers. @organjazz. I challenge you to play one regardless of what people have told you. I bet you would love this organ better than the B-3MKS. But make sure that you use it witht the new 971 speaker. You would be amazed how well it sounds.
Indeed it is not the "real" thing, but this KeybDuo is the next best thing, it is one of the best Clonewheels on the market right now. (no, I don't have shares in this company, and yes: I prefer a real Hammond too) Sometimes it is not convenient to carry an 185 kg B3. I think think this one is a good alternative....
@patsaxon Since we just did a gig with Joey a few weeks ago, I can assure you that he is not about money but a company listening to what their artists have to say about their products. And apart of that, the KeyB really is great... We do have 2 of them in our backline stock. But if you want to pay 20000 $ for an original hammond that makes worse (sampled!) sounds than 5000 $ for a KeyB that makes awesome generated sounds, go ahead!
anyone would want to see Joey play the all New Hammond Elegante Xh-272. this is Hammond organ flagship model that is suppose to be just as good or better than the Hammond B-3 organ. you have to add a 971 organ to the elegante to make it sound like the New B-3 MK2
The Paisans know how to build a Ham clone! (sorry, just a shout to the italians out there ;). I just wish I could afford one. There's only one (obvious) thing here though that may not be important to some, the look and majesty of the real deal and real leslie/122 isn't there (as the cherry on top). JoeyD - one of THE baddest of course.
since you commented this 10 years ago maybe you know by now but basically ill explain. He uses it either to double up the basses or when he changes setting he plays basses with his left foot so that the basses don’t suddenly disappear. (Left foot is bass, right expression pedal/lesslie)
This is a public space. Joey as well can be reading these lines. So, I think a great artist deserve some respect form his admirers, and even more, some encouragement and support. I don't think that spiting presumptions about his attitude will help.
And doesn't have Sudiologic a Numa Organ on his specifications? Excuse me folks, but the great master brand fidelity is inverse to his huge chops. Let's just enjoy the playing. A good player can use anything and there's a lot of options out there.
It is hammond flagship organ and no imnot trying to sale a Hammond Elegante. I just stating a fact that peple dont realize becuase they are so use to playing the B-3. You sound like the poeple who first said the diversi sounded face simply becuase it was not a Hammond organ and it was a spin off brand.
Rude words about a great artist patsaxon. But i wouldn't really worry to much about what cloneweel to play yank36, or when is possible, the real thing. But I'm very satisfied with my Hammond SK2 as also Nord owners, Numa owners, Roland, Wersi, etc. It's a pain in the ass this habit that we call in my country "dick measuring" (mine is always better bulshit...).
My friend, I think you didn't got the point. YT isn't a big sofa for watching TV where we all see and comment the show but the artist doesn't hear us. Even that "anyone" can make rude comments, I - at least - was educated to not be deliver cruel metaphors on others condition, that won't help anyone or Mr. De Francesco, who can be reading these lines as you and me. Really, as much other "everyones", you are being rude shielded in the anonymity of the internet. I have more pity on you than him.
OK, but so you relate the obesity with the change of instrument? For sure Joey must take care of his health, and talking of obesity, it relates with psychological aspects. A very personal issue for fan speculations. But I don't see the connection with the endorsements. I hope he will get better shape, as Chick Corea achieved (for example in music/keys). But I don't se even relation with his professional activity. My five cents - no psychologist here. And lazyness is still a rude wit.
