Besides having total mastery of his instrument and a deep grasp of music theory, Joey DeFrancesco had an innate ability to 'swing his ass off'. That's why all his performances are filled with such joy. I can't believe he's gone. RIP maestro perfetto.
saw Joey live with the Great Jimmy Smith. A small club in L.A. Joey was groovin' away as I watched and drummed on my seat, unseen Jimmy entered the room and stood behind me and placed his hands on my shoulders! I slowly stood and hugged him. Add that to meeting James Brown, seeing and meeting Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald as they sang and played in my neighbor's living room, I had a few great experiences as a kid.
Wow what a storyl And for me? I had tickets for the Jimmy Joey show at Oakland Yoshis but Jimmy passed a week or so before the gig. I HAVE RAIN CHECK TICKETS IN HEAVEN TO SEE THEM PLAY SOME DAY.........
@@TboneWertman Do you have a very weird sense of humor or a personality disorder? I've no idea why a rational person would react to my comment that way.
Playing a steady bass line while improvising. 🤯 So glad my dad took me to see Joey play in the late nineties when I was just a teen. RIP, Joey. What a talent.
Hello I'm a french Hammond Organ B3 and Piano player, friend from Rhoda Scott. I like very much the way you play. 5***** and I took it under my favorites. musipass
I'm actually a really good Hammond player ... but it blows my mind every time how guys/gals can play pedals AND all that other sh*t at the same time!!! I confess, at present, I can't do it. Joey is (was) definitely one of the best. Shame he passed, yes, but look at the incredible catalog he left behind. What more could an artist or his fans desire. R.I.P. Joey DeFrancesco. One of my inspirations to be sure.
The best Jazz organ player has left the building - what shocking and sad news! To me, he was Jimmy Smith's successor and he did him proud for sure! He could not only easiliy compete with the very best organ players in the world on a technical level but he had an amazing feel for melody. Most importantly, he was entertaining and a joy to watch besides what he played. He is terribly missed, what a huge loss, especially for us Hammond organ enthusiasts! I'm gutted ...
@@hammondvoodoo9555 No you can't, and Joey will always have his own unique place in history. Saying that, we keep our eyes and ears on the future as well as the past. Long live the Hammond!
@@nickyfarrell3024 I wasn't comparing them. I was simply saying that greats come and go. Corey and Joey differ too much in style to compare in any case.
Joey was an incurable talent and a perfect gentleman as is Frank Vignola. I had occasion to meet both and both were most gracious and supportive. The world could use more of their kind. Joey will be missed.
Joey just the greatest living organist for this type of music. There were many others that are now gone, but thankfully Booker T. Jones is still with us. Long live the mighty Hammond Organ!!! Thanks for posting.
Ive been drinking a beer and smoking a joint listening this song every Friday for the lasts two months, every time the same feeling. Mellow moon jazz madness, great upload.
Out of all of the videos on RU-vid this is the one I have seen the most. I have viewed this hundreds maybe 1000 times. Joey is one of my favorite musicians of all time. May he rest in peace
What incredible band! This is music!!! The most beautiful interpretation of this jazz standard! Frank Vignola is great and his guitar solo is perfect, but DeFrancesco is a true genius!!! Thanks!
NEVER HEARD OF HIM,SO ALFRESO IN LAS PALMAS 201I APPROX.HE BLEW ME AND THE PLACE APART.JAW DROPPING.I HEARD OF HIM BACK THEN..REST. IN PEACE DEAR HAMMOND MASTER EVERLASTING AMEN.
Joey's the man! I can watch this guy groove for hours. I'm an M3 player myself and can throw down some funk but, when it comes to joey he's got that swing! Damn! the man has got the swing! Tear up them keys son! Tear it up and burn the house down!! You set the "B" on fire with flava!!! Go joey! Go!!!
RIP Joey DeFrancesco. We will miss you. Thank you for all you have given to the world. You were humble, very humble, like all great people. You joined Jimmy Smith and the others in Heaven and in Legend. Respect.
Your spirit is soaring way past the moon Mr. Defrancesco. I'm sure you were greeted by all of the musical greats who went before. Enjoy your ride and rest in peace sir.
@HammondB200 Dat dere is a MONSTER! Smokin Joe-y D" ... there's "sunny D" - an orange drink substitute for the real thing ... and then there's "Joey D" - the Real thing! Thank you oh lord for giving us this talented artist to enjoy!!!!!!
I'm not even a keyboard player, and I have to say that Joey D is a huge inspiration. I'm a sax player, and I spend hours studying his technique. There's so much that I want to incorporate into my own playing.
the essence of the Basie Band in one organ! That swings harder than 50 horn players and no rhythm guitar! A masterpiece of tasty playing. keep your modern stuff I love the groove.
I just got turned on to Joey a couple of years ago, and all I can say is: How the heck did I miss this guy. He's probably the best I've ever heard. Man, what a player, what a heartfelt player. I'm sorry he died so young but thank God we have all this music of his on tape or video. God rest your soul, Joey. Marc Trainor
One more Time!!! Great job HammondB200! Fly Me to the Moon -Outstanding perfomance! Che Bella! A wonderful video, wonderful, and of course the musicians: Frank Vignola and Joe Circione. Merci, merci Joey!!!
Oh my God! A true master! I was telling my nephew about this incredible man and he said hey Aunt Noreen I met him in Vegas and he is a great guy.. I just got hip by getting van and Joey CD. I am star struck 🌟. H
Saw him years ago in Philly at a small restaurant venue. Awesome. He even autographed the Keyboard Magazine that I brought because he was in the issue. We had just a few quick words, what a really nice guy! Saddened by his passing, grateful for what he has given to me and the rest of the jazz loving world. Grazie, Joey!
Fly me to the moon.... When is the next flight scheduled? It may be one little step for man, but it certainly is a giant leap for mankind, this mean and dirty swing! Beautiful!
So sad for the loss of this incredible jazz master. He really brought the Hammond B3 back to the center of jazz. I love that instrument and long collected the albums of Jimmy Smith, Booker T. and the rock players who played the B3 so well (Greg Rolie of Santana as an example). RIP
Thank you Joey for a live show in Edmonton Alberta that I’ll never forget. Your talent and musical feeling was at such a high level , and hopefully will inspire other young players to reach for the moon, too.
