I believe Johan was far too educated, socially intelligent, and well adjusted (on a surface level) to not be evil. He understood what he was doing and why it was wrong. This is pretty interesting though.

True, but it poses an interesting question, is doing nothing, knowing that pain and suffering will be inflicted by others against himself and his sister less wrong? In other words, is it better to protect someone (Anna is in this case) but to do this in a violent criminal way, or to stand by whilst others inflict pain on someone (Bonaparte and his group on Anna).

Also if he knew what he was doing was wrong he wouldn’t have done it unless it’s a lesser evil type of situation. Either he tried to protect his sister or he doesn’t have moral principles because of his childhood or a mix of both

This is a very subtle pitfall of understanding Johan. Knowing doesn’t stop you from smoking no matter how smart you are. When you have bigger goals that drive you morals tend to not matter. For example, killing Hitler, Tenma being out to kill Johan, going out to kill Osama, bombing Japan. Why are these actions justified? We learn about ethics yes but no one talks about anything outside of it thus it becomes it’s own bubble. There are other things that influences our actions. Parents will go to great lengths to cover up for their children, watch the film, the lie to understand this in depth.

You can argue that the reason Johan killed the directors of the hospital was not only that he was grateful to Tenma but that he recognized that they were inept and corrupt, and that Tenma would do a better job of running the hospital in their place. It was ultimately to the benefit of the patients and the world that he killed them. Perhaps he even saved more lives than he killed, in doing that. From his perspective, it was a perfectly logical and correct move, and he doesn't have the same reticence toward murder that the others around him have, having already become acclimated to it.
@alvarocj6392

No, he only did that to make Tenma fall in despair and to force him to abandon his motto of "every life worth the same" . That's why he wanted to be killed by him, because in that way, Tenma will go against his philosophy making him fall in despair as well as the other people Johan brought despair to.

Every villain has a tragic backstory that scars them deeply, so does every hero. The difference is that the hero tries to prevent people from experiencing what they (the gero) went through, while the villain doesn't care if somebody else has to suffer for them (the villain) to get what they want, since they have have been through much worse.

It’s nice that you pointed out that Richard managed to deduce that Edmund Fahrens death wasn’t a suicide since his intelligence is underrated however, he only knew it could’ve been Johan due to the information he got from Dr Reichwein & Gillen when Tenma told them it was Johan (Johan never hid his true nature from Tenma as we saw in Episode 4 where he kills Junkers).

It summarizes everything about Johan's character and helps understand his motives, but of course Johan's backstory and understandable motives doesn't justify his horrible actions. It’s insane when you realize a lot of, if not all of the things that Johan does, are actually out of love for his sister. Ana is his twin, yes, and she also represents the good side of Johan. It’s hard to figure out Johan’s character entirely because there’s so many pieces to the puzzle, but this video helped a lot.

I don't see that as a love, beyond that, I see it as a sick and twisted obsession, killing for your sister? Making people break up for your sister? That's not a love, it's an obsession, Johan doesn't see Nina as a person, she sees her as another part of her identity, you could say that because they are twins, but twins do not always have to be equal in emotions and thoughts.

@@Joyscp999 That's not true though. He feels guilty because his mother let the "monster" Bonaparta abduct her in his stead, which casued her a lot of suffering that he felt was meant for him. So he wants to make up for that by making sure that she won't ever suffer from Bonaparta again by erasing their past, and keeping her out of the hands of the authorities. Bonaparta even comes to visit them and the Lieberts, showing that he wasn't exactly wrong to be paranoid about him. You might see it as "sick and twisted" but to him it was reasonable. Johan was never evil, he just made an entire orphanage start playing fighting games that unfortunately got most of them killed including adults. He was kind and good enough to tell a child that his mother never wanted him and to go to the city and look for his mother. Unfortunately making the child wanted to commit suicide but again Johan had good intentions. He was also good in making serial killers , gang bosses, underground police do his bidding to help him create a world for his sister and him only. He also only shoots people he feels are an obstacle to his plans. This and many more actions say that Johan was never evil he just has this weird ability that 99.99% when he talks or simply exists bad things happen either instantly or moments after. Amazing video, great editing and narration. Also that ExpressVPN insert lol. I just come from finishing watching the anime for the first time yesterday. I honestly believe that Johan truly was evil... until he encountered the Nameless Monster book again. The reason I say this is because of thay scene where he goes into one of his associates that apparently was the holder of all the money he obtained. I am assuming this also happens in the manga, but in the anime Johan gives his gun to this person and does his typical pointing to his own forhead pretty much asking for a bullet to the forhead. The other person tells him to stop joking, then they talk about a change of plans. Johans tells him about the famous "view/landscape" that only Tenma would see, and proceeds to murder this other criminal. To me, he really wanted to end the world, but in a twist of fate the book reminded him of why he embraced the Monster within him and changed course after that anxiety attack at the library. He was viciously murdering people left and right before that, and after it the killings were slowing down. It caughts my attention that the bible verse from Revelations only comes TWICE in the story (iirc): at the beginning and at the very end. Johan might have been truly the Antichrist, the world-ending human created by ourselves. And who knows, maybe he never got to become human after all.

Wow. I came here to re-experience my love for Monster after having a terrible week...and I find my essay linked in the description of your video! To say that I am honored is not enough to explain how happy this made me! Thank you so much. I will "edit" this comment with my thoughts on your video, but I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am for the credit. I'm touched my perception of a series has assisted you in some shape or form! Actually, my twin brother and I worked together on our analysis essays. His was through video form, perhaps you've seen it? The title is "Johan did nothing wrong" (bait title lol ) But anyways, my written essays served as the foundation to his more in depth analysis. I will be sure to send this video his way! His username is Leovoid! - Edit: OKAY *cracks fingers* let's start. First, I absolutely love the atmospheric editing you did. As a video editor myself, you did an astounding job. The mix of SFXs was *chefs kiss* I love how you laid out the details in order in a very less confusing manner. Very concise, simple and clear. Stating Johan "had no other choice" but to kill the elderly couple because they were going to call the police and therefore, signal to the massively influential Monster into knowing their whereabouts - is something people gloss over. Many people just think Johan killed those old people to kill them. And what people forget is that Johan is methodical. He is not random. He never acts without rhyme or reason. okay...I was thrown off when the subtitle said something about "VPN" when Johan spoke. and NOW IM DEAD LMAOOOOOO. This was such a good transition from the video to a promotional ad. I love it. Genius hahaha. I love the line "If you want to have the interpretation that Johan killed just to kill - then look at all the people who he killed and the connection." That is such a simple way to put it. This is why those who misunderstand Johan are only doing so because they look at the series at surface level. If one puts in the effort to connect the many puzzle pieces Naoki scattered before us, things will become evident. I'm relieved someone else finally believes in the same idea that Johan did not try to set up Dr. Tenma. I'm also glad you are giving Richard the credit he deserves!!! I hope your video opens the eyes of many. The driving force behind writing my essays was the fact that there was this popular belief that Johan wanted to torture and kill his sister. It was plastered everywhere, wiki pages, reddit, tumblr - youtube videos. and I just could not believe it! So I hope this helps people understand that Johan was not an evil monster - but just a human being. Thank you again!

Johan is a character I’ve never seen before and I’m intrigued . I had to do some research to better understand his actions through the story. I agree that he wasn’t necessarily a villain because his harsh childhood shaped him into the way he is and literally his whole existence revolved around an experiment , which isn’t something to be looked at lightly and experiencing first hand how cruel and inhumane humans can be

Based on what I've observed, the ending is quite not as we expected to see, well, it only tells us that evil will always exist and as well the good will remain in order for the world to be balanced. Pertains to the real monster, it's the parents of Johan and Ana, which results in their bad decision making from the start where they join in that kind of organization's experiment which leads to the problem in the future where both those child Johan and Ana suffered with those decisions that they make. Even though their parents decides to leave and escape that organization, still their decision in the first place causes chaos in the end, until their children doesn't even know it's own name, as well as those pairs who are part of that experiment they have a decision to stop it but they joined it like a creature with no minds for not thinking what future will happened and they will think to leave when just something bad happened, And as well to Johan known as the monster in the story, well, he was just one of the victims where he is the outcome of the bad decision of their parents.

Honestly, I can't help but see him as like the anti-Ash (Ash Lynx from Banana Fish). Both are intelligent, know how to manipulate, have good looks that are openly acknowledged, are acknowledged to be born leaders, are charismatic, have killed, and have a distrust of adults. The only difference is mainly in the case of killing, Ash was ordered to kill and has likely killed dozens and even when he's crying to Eiji, he claims he felt nothing when he did it- but Eiji corrects him in saying he wouldn't be crying now if he didn't. In Johan's case, it was all for a greater purpose, covering his tracks, protecting Anna, repaying Tenma, they were kills with a solid meaning without being random. It's just something interesting to me since I've recently started watching Monster, but at the same time have been a huge fan of Banana Fish, so I can't help but make little connections. ^^

I mean i get that he wasn't enjoying doing what he did like joker or anything but his methods are just too chaotic to be regarded as normal. He is certainly not a normal person doing what needs to be done or anything, which is understandable considering his childhood. You made is look like he did everything for his sister like lelouch. But setting an entire Library on fire cannot with an intend to kill everyone. And causing an entire town to massacre itself for no apparent reason just doesn't fit right to me. Also him manipulating talking to that kid eho tried to commit suicide seems intentionally manipulative. Also we see random kids which he talked to walking on rooftops and stuff which he too did that also adds to his evil personality. I understand your point that johan is capable of reason but still he does things which are unreasonable and abnormal adding more to the psychopathic vibe of his. Johan didn't think what he said to those kids was evil since he was just sharing his perspective on the world, a perspective which happened to be very dark. Tenma did the same thing but he shared that the world is full of light and love, because that's what he truly believed. I don't think Johan wanted to kill those kids, he was simply sharing his ideals, just like Tenma. He sees nothing wrong making Milos go out to look for his mother and face the harsh reality because that's what he did as well. That's what he had learned was normal.

However, you can find free options just be careful and make sure they are legit no scams or whatever to hack you. You have to keep editing, that is one of my tips because I've been editing for years upon years, I've switched software and had to relearn features but since about 2016 and then when serious about 2020, you can improve pretty fast though you just to keep at it. (There was a pause between then so really 2020) Watch many tutorials and I recommend not trying to do crazy stuff first, learn the basics, and usually from basics you can be creative just based on that. Watch movies, videos, etc when you do this you see the different ideas creatively people use and gain inspiration, and notice the sound design in some of the music placements. And then if you're really trynna do that youtube style study the top RU-vidr's editing. There's a lot to learn but it takes time you can do it!

I find it hard to overcome something that was literally instilled in you even before your birth, being propped up to be the next hitler essentially. Some of his actions in the show definitely display malice and intent but once you find out the real truth behind his actions it makes you wonder if he in fact was just another victim of the corrupt system all other characters had to live in.

There’s this popular concept that “evil is irrational” therefore Johan isn’t evil bc he has a justification for what he does… this is a fallacy, evil actions don’t become less evil bc there’s a somehow noble justification. That’s the whole point of this story. Its like the message flew over your head lmao Also Johan kills the first couple even though they most probably wanted to adopt them, and also kills the Liebert’s even though they never treated them wrong and they didn’t know who Bonaparta was. Johan kills his parent figures cause he saw the monster in his mother back in the Three Frogs, he cant trust adults. That’s something you didn’t consider, his killings aren’t objective at all either, they are emotional as well.

this video was super helpful as I just finished watching Monster. My view of him was already changing but now I see it better. I think everything you said was right, although I would add that Johan is less sympathetic because he teaches kids some of the f-ed up stuff he was taught even though he’s obviously angry that this was done to him. He seems to believe that this is the way the world is, but he didn’t have to nudge them like that

Explanations for actions does not excuse them. While what happened to Johan was horrible, it was his choice to turn into what he became. I say this because Nina had the exact same thing happen to her (and she actually went through the physical torment unlike Johan who just thinks he went through it) and she is still a good person. All his past does is explain his actions. They do not in anyway excuse them and he is well aware what he is doing is wrong. The fact that he feels like he has to do what he does does not absolve him of any responsibility. One can empathize with a villains actions while still realizing they are evil.

Yes they were friends at 511 kinderheim as well. Grimmer and Roberto exchanged their actual names back then because their memories were being erased. But Roberto didn't get a chance to talk to Grimmer about that. Grimmer mentions that he had a friend at 511 and his name was Adolf Reinhardt. He also mentioned that Adolf likes chocolate pies ig I'm not sure what it was but Johan reminds Roberto of the exact same dish and then Roberto thinks that Johan was his actual friend and thats why he does everything for Johan right now.

Ok. Correct me, if I am wrong, but one thing *does NOT fit* me... 🤔 As, if Johan join Lieberts with Anna, HOW he got Anna and why for example that 'good' orphanage, that suppousedly took care of Anna, knowing her for long, seeing her growing up, does NOT remember Anna/Nina disappearing, rather being adopted? 🤔 And didn't they all already remember her as Nina in Orphanage? Or I miss-remember? 🤔 Because if they do, it will be sign, that NINA, name she got later on, was one she already took over. Which will symbolize also, it must have been after Lieberts death. If faster, Nina will still be ANNA. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And in Fortner house, she was already Nina. Where Johan run with her and threated her later loving parents to take care of her. And Fortner are LAST Nina parents. Meaning, they were obviously AFTER LIEBERTS. Which - unless Johan did not kept changing also Anna/Nina name, crush timeline You shown a little, as in proper one, BEFORE facing Lieberts, she have to go to orphanage. So going to Fortners, was again Johan and Anna alone. BUT Johan rather joined adopted 'Nina'. So, is there possibility, Johan already once took Anna/Nina from Fortners? 🤔 But then, again. IF memory serves me right and after years can fail me, in orphanage Anna was NINA. So, post Liebert time. Unless, again, she kept switching. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If kids joined Lieberts st SAME TIME, assuming they appeared together... It must have meaning, that Anna Liebert was at once taken from, then given back to Fortners, as Nina. Because in orphanage she was Nina already... 🤔

@shockwave2617
@shockwave2617 Год назад
@@AventSir Blood Meridian is a 1985 novel by Cormac McCarthy (author of No Country for Old Men) that's regarded as an anti-western which, even the famously elitist Harold Bloom deemed it one of the best 20th-century American novels. Holden, thematically, symbolically and skill-wise, has some similarities with Johan but with no redeeming qualities. Imagine Johan possessed by Killer BOB from Twin Peaks set loose in the wild-west. It should be noted that the book is written in a very poetic style with the unorthodox use of punctuation, so it may take time to build a coherent interpretation of it. However, its themes and broader ideas may prove an interesting object of comparison and contrast with other works like Monster and Death Note.

I acknowledge every statement of this video. However, everything would have been fine if and only if Johan atoned to his crimes(don't deny he did kill many people even though it was for the sake of his sister's welfare) verbally and served a few years in jail then start living normally with Anna/Nina as well as forgive his mother by meeting up and teaching her that what she did at that time was really wrong. Like you guys can't be only seeing the prespective of Johan but not his mother since his mother was also going through alot without anyone by her side plus she was a very young mother thus making such a horrible decision . All of this happend for Bonaparte's experiment but he regrets it at the end. Afterall all we are humans and its ok for humans to make mistake but what is wrong is NOT CONFESSING to their mistake / letting one learn their mistake. I know all of this is hard for Johan himself but he is the only one who can help himself by forgiving his mother and actually put an end to his own misery.

@lynneo8869 I guess that's the truth of it... Something on my mind right now is, don't you think Monster's ending was better left unanswered? I think the main problem with all this is that ultimately, you can say that Johan loves his sister, but the thing is, his ''love'', no matter how well-intentioned he wants to make himself believe it is or wants to give it away, understand, it does not leave in itself in bases, of being a twisted love. love, which is something good,and natural in humanity,being executed like what johan did,it is not truly more of a negative thing,and it should not be like that. And listen to me, my problem is not Johan loving his sister, Johan can perfectly do that, he can perfectly be like any other human being, nothing prevents him from doing so, but that the love he has is expressed and demonstrated in this way. ..it is not a love that I would consider valid. still,great video

absolutely facinating video essay with a great moral in the end, however, there's one detail I disagree with. Johan is evil because of the fact that he was intelligent enough to understand what he was doing, no matter how calculated and clinical he was, even if it was for protection, good intentions don't mean you get spared from being evil, though that is a much deeper discussion, which I would love to have. Johan as a character is fascinating, because he's the opposite of grimmer, my favourite character, grimmer, even after everything he's been through, tries to stay human, the magnificent steiner is of course the elephant in the room which you may argue also makes him evil deep down, and that would make me a hypocrite if I said that grimmer for one, had split personalities and his unrestricted brutality could not be controlled, and johan was conscious and aware with every one of his actions as an adult, and the people grimmer killed as steiner were people that put him and the people he cared for in danger. in the end, I do appreciate johan's redemption if you can call him that, as i do believe everyone should be given a second chance, and as I'm writing this, i think i do see that Johan, maybe was never truly evil, he was just a victim of the world around him, guess I'm wrong after all, haha

This was put together pretty well, however... I feel that with all the effort Avent spent on shedding light on Johan, Avent, in a sense, forgave Johan too easily. By forgiving Johan so much, the entire frame of what is logical, moral, and practical has shifted into a place that doesn't represent reality. Sacrificing this so that Johan can be explained in some other context where dealing murder and sowing corruption is "what he had to do" is only representing him through Johan's own mind and is not really objective. Would another person commit to these kinds of acts to solve Johan's problems? What benefit is it to us who live in reality to understand Johan not through a lens we understand, but though Johan's deviant mind? Another thought I have is this, in reality we generally have standards of things that are logical, moral, and practical. These standards have continually been tested for thousands of years by many kinds of deviants, yet they exist. Institutions have been founded on them - which incidentally serve the larger population. Given this context, Johan, who bucks against this kind of stuff with his murder and corruption, is a deviant. He is not a pioneer, as many like him have come before him in the thousands of years humanity has lived on this Earth. He is simply another challenger - not necessarily by his own intention as much as the fact that he exists and behaves as he does. I could say more, but this is enough.

@@AventSir Let me try to do this one more time. In a world where it is normal for a man to have sex with women without her consent, a man rapes a woman because he just wants to have sex. Contrast that to reality which most would describe as a just world and the common explanation is that a man does so because he is motivated by an anger at women and has the need to control or dominate them. I am just saying that it matters what the standards of the world are, and if you throw those away you actually loose a great deal of understanding in the character. You can say that Johan killed because he wanted to protect his sister, but I think this is an explanation akin to the first world I described. Most people don't become serial killers to protect their siblings, so I don't think this is a good enough explanation. It might make sense to Johan, but through the lens of reality that most of us live in, I think it is too shallow of an explanation.
