Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was the fifth son of the great Johann Sebastian; no wonder J.C.F. became a noted harpsichordist, and composer! Taught mainly by his father, J.C.F studied at the St. Thomas School, considered to be one of the oldest schools in the world. William, the Count of Schaumburg-Lippe, hired him as court harpsichordist in 1750; he became concertmaster there in 1759. In that same year, his first son, William Friedrich Ernst was born; J.C.F. taught him music, and Wilhelm went on to become a professional musician, the last one in the direct line of Johann Sebastian. J.C.F. composed excellent music in a variety of genres. The present set of 18 variations are based on a song that Mozart also used for variations. The theme, popular in France at the time, was later used for two songs quite familiar to the English speaking world: “Twinkle twinkle little star”, and “Baa, Baa Black Sheep”.
