What a mesmerizing, eternal evening. A bit sad after the passing of legends Brecker and Abercrombie. I saw the VHS for the first time in the early 90's. After 3 decades, this music still sounds just as intense. Needless to say that the ultra refined sounds of the other two legends - Johnson and Erskine - make the experience even more remarkable and unique.
This is 1985 not '86. The record "Night" that Abercrombie had recorded and released in 1984 had been out for 6-8 months at this point. "Night" is his latest record as a leader at the time this performance was filmed, and he is playing a good amount of music from that album here.
this is an absolutely awesome performance. the musicianship is off-the-hook. perfection! i have this on vhs but this appears to be a beautiful upload from the laser disc. thank you.
What a performance from people some now dead who you’ll never see on mainstream tv. Neil Peart approached Erskine for lessons late on in his career and you can see why. What a drummer
Great to be in that audience , quiet free form jazz . I love the synthesizer he has on his guitar and the little bit of that echo at the first , everything calmly under stated . Michael Brecker is a monster sax player who unfortunately died way to early , his brother who played trumpet is still with us I think . When they were learning their instruments , they played the hell out those exercise books , because when they played together it was a cutting contest , lots of velocity and both of them equally gifted . I'm sure they had a musical up bringing , their father was a famed pianist . The bass player and the drummer are first class musicians . So much talent and restraint .
