Well, the Epilogue shows that he became a present father but not a really good one. It was necessary for Abigail and Jack leave him so that he could finally understand that he was not a good husband and father. Props up for Charles and Uncle for helping him

Never understood the hate for abigails 'nagging'. She's not nagging, she's asking John to be a father and being reasonably upset when he refuses to do so.
People seem to be forgetting that John is literally an outlaw putting all their lives on the line. If anything was more worth "nagging" someone about...
I feel as if she is right in chapter 1-6, but she really is deranged in chapters 7-8. Both her angry rants at pronghorn are insane. "God dammit John! How dare you act in self defense when your life was in danger! Think of Jack, you should have allowed yourself to be shot!" "God Dammit John! How dare you save the ranch from being run out of business! You should have stayed in bed, so that the ranch is shut down and we need to move on again!" In her goodbye letter to John, she will write "I see you are CLEARLY incapable of living a normal life." And as if to directly mock her, the game will then show a montage of John living a perfectly normal and happy life on the farm, without Abigail, proving her wrong. She finally comes back, after John Charles and Uncle do 100% of the work building her dream house for her, and she has the NERVE to insult Uncle and tell him to go!? Firstly he built the house. Secondly he BLED for the house, he was tortured and nearly killed by the skinners making her damn dream house. Leave the old man alone!
I also watched a guy get eaten by wolves, a lady suffocate under the weight of her horse, another drunk guy hug a horses ass and get kicked to death, some lady bawling over her husband's hanging... My Arthur likes to watch... 👁👁 👅 👢👢
A man and a woman arguing like a married couple and they aren’t even married! The Van Der Linde gang could've just made a film about John and Abigail and they'd be golden just like how dramas are these days, full of whining women and brooding men.
My take on it is this... I believe that before Jack was taken, John didn’t even understand the feelings he had for his family. In his mind the life with the gang was the only life he knew, and he figured that was the only life he would live from that point on. He was cold, and didn’t see a point in trying to make a connection with his family.
@@mitchellrupena9460 He also never had a real relationship with his father so he doesn’t know what a good father would do. He was only 4 years older than Jack when he was orphaned so he probably has a cynical view of parenthood in general
@@josephstalin2606 yes, john's father was a drunk violent man, got blind in one of his bar fights I suppose john's childhood and relation with his father would have been horrible With the facts that he had a very low opinion about himself as a man and as a father, tried to do better with abi and jack even before jack kidnapping, he's a tortured man Also, john said something in chap2 to arthur like john's family is "safe" in the gang, so it's different than for arthur's deceased family, john has less a reason to be very present and protectice to jack
@@gamerstheater1187 He wasn’t ever hanged, it’s implied he just died after getting into a bar fight. His dad wasn’t an outlaw he was just a drunkard and possibly abusive, it’s Arthur’s dad who was an outlaw and was either hanged or shot
Dylan Wilding it wasn’t even her tent. She stayed with Jack in that tent behind the food wagon from chapter 2-3. Then they moved into Johns tent(room in chapter 4) from chapter 4-6
It's so hard to watch John act this way to Abigail and totally neglect Jack, knowing the man he eventually becomes. I'm so glad John became a responsible husband and father because seeing him like this is blood-boiling.

I actually started RDR2 immediately after completing the first game, and seeing John be this weak ass dumbass shit ass who doesn't care for his family was a great way to distance him from the RDR1 fans and have us empathize with Arthur, being that he's treated like an errand boy by Abigail, whom he once loved.
After Jack was taken John realized he cared for his family and from then on did what he could to help them. Eventually Abigail and jack left John in the epilogue but only because she was scared he would continue robbing people and killing. Once John gave her and jack the life they wanted she stayed with him knowing he did love them both

Honestly, I spent so much time away from home as John in the epilogue. WTB divorce function, since by then you should be stinking rich anyway, so child support would be chump change and you'd be free of the endless nagging. EDIT: Maybe then the player could shack up with someone fun, like Sadie or Karen.

Dude there's no indication that John doesn't just love Jack. He's too ashamed of himself to do the "Fathering" openly. Here he's mostly immature against his character in RDR with difficulty expressing things. Notice how throughout the prologue of RDR2 to RDR his personality changes and he becomes more confident. It's true that Abigail and John complete each other.
12 years later: "You always was weak minded." "You were the one who let Dutch drive you insane!" "Dutch wanted you dead. We all did." "I'm going after him next, I'll outlive all of you!" "You always was a traitor, you bastard orphan!" "And you always was a dumb inbred hick."
It’s nice to see the growth John goes through. From being an arrogant selfish asshole to changing into the man we all love to see. John fell more in love with Abigail as they’re relationship went on. Glad to see he enjoyed his family for a bit before he gave his life for them.
Not trying to be an A*hole but, a lot of people used to pass a broom on grass or dirt, to remove excessive trash and rocks. Also, the fact that she can't read doesn't make her a moron, she's just "analphabetic" or uneducated. John on the other hand, and many others, made the same mistakes over and over again. He didn't learn from them, therefore he is a moron. If you don't know that fire is hot and burns, and you touch the you should know not to touch it again, but if you keep touching it then you are a certified moron. P.S. Please excuse my orthography if any mistakes, English is not my main language.
It really is painful how much she cares and how little he is able to show care for her, his son and even for himself. She is more there for him than he is himself. And that's very frustrating for her. It's possible to become annoyed at her as a nag, but mature players know better. They know she's in the right.
Abigail was clearly in love with John from chapter one onwards. It just took him awhile to realize how good he had it. You saw how fast he manned up and handled his business once he understood. It's the one thing he learned before Arthur.

I like how throughout the game John starts to treat Abigail and Jack a little better, and then when we get to 1907 & 1911, family’s the most important thing to him to where he’d even kill his old gang members for them
I absolutely love the fact that this isn’t the same John I knew from RDR1. I genuinely hated his guts at times but watching him slowly change into that John I knew was one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever experienced across any media I’ve experienced, as of yet.
@@leandros.9063 John knocked her up and ran away. In that day and age, that's a pretty pathetic thing to do. Abigail might have been a real bitch at times, but you could tell she was driven there by the fact that she couldn't even ask John to just have a talk without him having a fit. Not to mention their situation wasn't exactly a normal one. They grew to love each other eventually.
Don't forget John's reaction as he turned and saw that Abigail was standing right there. 🤣😂🤣 I wouldn't doubt he was comparing Bill's statement about loving liquor but it's not loving him to his relationship with Abigail. 😂
I really appreciate the full-circle of character development the devs did for the marston family throughout rdr2. They made John and Abigail practically hate each other and not get along in the first couple chapters, but they've started to get along again around chapter 4 and 5, while still not being perfect. These little details and writing decisions really are what make rdr2 one of my favourite games.
I Love John's character development in this Game, you can't almost not recognize that's the Man Who killed his old Friends and gave his Life for his family
There's a scene in Clemens Point where Abigail tells a bunch of guy, not even a good crowd, that being a mother sucks and she hates having to take care of a snooty kid. And yet here she is about to rip off Arthur's and John's head when he's gone. Love how they grow as a couple and parents
The dialogue changes if you stand further away. Specifically the two conversations at the shady bell camp. If you stand back when they are talking under the porch they agree to sleep together in the same room as a family and they all walk upstairs. If you get too close you become involved in the conversation and Abigail gets mad.
Yup. When I entered the house and eavesdropped through the window (but close to them) they didn't acknowledge I was there just like if you had stood back far
I love how John's and Abigail's relationship develops over the course of the story. John turns from an irresponsible and cold man to a loving father who puts his life on the line. People give Abigail grief for nagging John but she is within her rights to do so. Both her and John had difficult childhoods (both were orphans) and had to resort to crime to survive. Abigail wants Jack to have a better life, a more stable childhood and she wants John to accept his responsibility as a father. When she and Jack leave John in 1907, she doesn't do it out of spite or hatred but out of a genuine fear that John is slipping back into the outlaw life. I found John initially to be irritating as a character but as he started warming up to Jack and taking his fatherly role with a lot more seriousness and dedication, I really started to take a liking to him. His story during the Epilogue proves that he has the capacity to be a good father to Jack. Also, people commenting on Abigail being illiterate... so? It doesn't mean anything. Illiteracy was much more common back then, especially for people hailing from impoverished backgrounds, such as Abigail.
Thank you for this! Abigail has every right to be angry at John because she stepped up to the plate to take care of their son but John didn’t want to. Of course she’s going to be angry. She loves him she truly does and she just wants him to be a better man that she knows he can be. And it kills her when he never really tries to clean up his act (I’ve been there)
@@indycole396 She left him because John didn't get her a ranch...... Then she whines again after John has been doing everything to get it and only Sadie is considerate enough to understand........ To be honest, they should have just left the country. Charles and Sadie managed to do it, why not them.....
2:15 - 3:17 I really loved how this scene played out! Just love how John and bill are being drunk shooting the shit and out of no where Abigail comes to tell john "pathetic" only this time, john is in a drunken state so Abigail's word doesn't hurt john and instead makes a mockery out the whole situation! All the while, Sean gives us a tune that perfectly fits the scene and plays us out! Beautiful scene (:
That party for Sean coming back was an awesome moment. The singing all night, discussion with John and Bill, Drinking Beer and Whisky, and asking everyone what they feel about Sean coming back
This moment John and Bill were talking about how he doesn’t really trust or like John because of Dutch’s doubt about him. So he compared liking liquor but it not liking him back to his Feelings about wanting to like him ,but it maybe not liking him back.
My favorite part is that John then goes "come here, my sweet!" Genuinely happy at her presence. Aaaand then they go have another fight in private. Lol almost feel bad for him.
Imagine if this was real life and Arthur was always just eavesdropping in people’s conversations and standing right in front of them 😂 I doubt anyone would even talk to him

She’s just one woman, how would she be able to protect a child from a gang of men?! It was the MEN that were meant to keep the family safe and protect them.
7:30. The exchange around here is perhaps the best one of them all. They're talking about their future, as well as Jack's, hoping for a semblance of normality and stability for his upbringing. Arthur is right that people don't change like the wind, while the both of them are talking about Jack's future. In the background your hearing 2 conversations, one being a raunchy song of the original Bell Bottom Trousers, which is a song about a cheap whore that gets screwed and a illegitimate child comes from it, with the father's request that If the child is a boy, that he goes into the Navy and becomes the the same degenerative scum as him. The second conversation being a ramble by Micah, talking about desire of the world, but also about the shortness of life and his own screwed-up philosophy of life. Perhaps the most underrated conversation about Jack in the whole series right here. I'm surprised no one is talking about this and that I'm just now realizing this.
During my play through I would notice these little moments between John and Abigail but I always left them alone to do their thing, crazy how these little moments could always be missed just by being impatient
6:58 John: Ain't nobody ever gonna take him again. I swear. When the o'driscolls raid the camp, the first thing John goes for is Jack. He really was sincere about that.
In fact when this happens Abigail immediately hides behind a wall with Jack, but Jack gets up and runs to John who takes him back to Abigail. You can even see Abigail trying to catch him before he goes.
You can clearly see that she loved him more than anything,it's not a joke,if you read between the lines you would know it,that was her way to demonstrate how much she cared about him,he's was lucky to have her and he knew it,Arthur knew it,and John never could return that much love,he did what he could,can you imagine how he felt when Ross taken them,"he failed her again,and the boy",this is something that makes you understand the name of the game,Arthur's redemption was something,but John's redemption is something more special,damn,this game is so special...
After hundreds of hours in chapter 2 across multiple playthroughs I never heard/seen them arguing this much at horseshoe. Guess I have to start another playthrough then. :D
