The local canals and pools are used for leisure purposes only nowadays, after a history of industrial usage, carrying goods and raw materials made in the Black Country along the canals to Birmingham and further afield. The canal tow paths are used by a great many people walking their dogs, jogging or simply walking to keep fit.
The song was inspired by photographs of people having fun on the waters. A boy leaping across a canal on his bike, two rival pub teams having a tug-of-war across a canal, girls leaping in the air and landing with a splash.
