I'm glad you guys seem intent on upholding the idea of having dialogues with all sides of political and ideological thought. I'm not a Trump supporter by any means, but it's extremely interesting to me to hear such discussions with such people as Bolton on the actual issues and details of situations, rather than getting bogged down in drama like they tend to do on TV news. I love getting to really hear the real ideas and thoughts from such different people on what problems are important, why, and how they feel they should be addressed. It's fascinating to learn and try to really understand the differing mindsets of leaders, whether I disagree with them or not. I truly hope you never bow to those I see in the comments on controversial speakers that say "you shouldn't allow this person or that person at Oxford". If Hitler were still alive, I'd highly encourage having him come have a discussion as well. Anyone who wouldn't find that extremely interesting and attempt to ban it, I would argue are narrow-minded and uninteresting people. It wouldn't be about being open-minded to Nazism, the point is to try to understand the person and reasoning. You cannot fix a problem that you don't understand. Outright refusing to even try to understand a problem is like trying to assemble a jigsaw puzzle blindfolded.

@@mrceo7448 I'm going to guess more than 0, but less than 30,000,000. Did I win?! What does this have to do with what I said about this video and Oxford's apparent openness to discussions and Q&A's with controversial and unpopular figures? I don't think that Oxford/the staff that organizes these are the people that control who is or isn't allowed into the country... Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Fine, lets invite all the people US has sanctioned, banned or calls a terrorists. Lets bring in holocaust deniers, murderers and rapists. And lets select a bunch of benign ill informed students similar to the ones we see here so that these criminals all get away with any crime they have committed. if your really not pretending or being selective in when and where to be a democrat then lets do it. The problem is that this is just a an absurd pretence intended to create a pleasant or respectable appearance when deep down we know you are not what you pretend to be. The only place we should cross examine them is in the court of law.

Yes, I agree with your position. What many critics and outright opponents don''t realize is that, if you ban such people from public debate, it generally reinforces their position with their supporters who otherwise might be more inclined to question their policies. Putting them to the test argumentatively is a long-term process but addresses the rational side of things rather than the emotional.

Interesting discussion. The nuclear deal essentially gives the IRGC regime its desired pathway, a lawful pathway, by which to achieve a nuclear weapons production capability. The Iranian regime oppresses its people while threatening genocide against our mutual ally Israel. The nuclear deal has afforded the Iranian regime a lawful pathway by which to achieve its stated criminal genocidal goal, perpetually entrench the IRGC and eliminate any chance of regime change without a nuclear armed conflict. Whereas, a complete dismantling of Iran's nuclear weapons facilities would have been a worthwhile deal. Further, as Dr. Matthew Levitt has emphasized, the IRGC's proxy Hezbollah perpetrated the single largest non-nuclear terrorist attack in human history. If Iranian-backed Hezbollah had a nuclear weapon, or a tactical nuclear weapon, would they have used it instead? Hezbollah's terror plot in London illustrates poignantly the modus operandi of the Iranian regime's proxy Hezbollah, and its ability to deliver a nuclear weapon via illicit networks, as Michael Braun testified before Congress was a leading national security concern here in the U.S. According to the symbiotic modus operandi detailed by Dr. Matthew Levitt, it is very likely if not certain that the Iranian regime had prior knowledge of Hezbollah's London terror plot, financed it and/or ordered it to be perpetrated as a criminal proxy terror attack.

That "grown up" was the architect of the Iraq War. You remember that war based upon the lie of Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction which destabilized the middle east, began the Iraqi refugee crisis, cost the US $3 trillion, and resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. He has also advocated for the US to militarily instigate regime change in Iran, Syria, North Korea, Libya, Venezuela, Yemen, and Cuba. The man is a consummate war hawk who will gladly start a war on a lie to strengthen US hegemony, human and financial costs be damned.

I always love the slanted far left questions. Well Trump has added to the deficit. Meanwhile when someone who is from the American left or Obama Administration they never bring up Obama added $9 trillion to $11 trillion to the debt. If you are going to play that game be consistent because it makes your question COMPLETELY disingenuous. This was the most cordial I have seen them with someone that isn't a lefty. How they treated Jordan Peterson and Ann Coulter really disgraced Oxford. For a school that touts itself as being 'superior and proper' they really turned out to be spoiled rabble.

Our Constitution is the most perfect document next to the Magna Carta. He was absolutely correct on the 2nd Amendment. Also, only our mass shooting have been committed by Democrats..ie. the children of registered Democrats. The steal the guns from the parents Safe. Not one NRA owner of firearms has EVER gone out and shoot up anybody. Chicago is a Free Gun Zone (a legal Term in the USA). And yet, criminals don’t follow the Laws. They depend on honest citizens who don’t have guns while they rob and murder citizens using guns they stole. I call Chicago a Self cleaning oven. I say have at it.

robert ely don’t be idiotic, the plain fact is that people need to hear what anyone says and then make up their own minds about it. Frankly, Bolton is more right than wrong. He is a pragmatist, committed to the US, understands history, indifferent to weak minded political correctness, frank, and will not allow himself or the US to be played or manipulated. He is not a warmonger but does advocate positions of strength and all options on the table, which unsettles many particularly politicians from other countries who smear and defame the US while using the US in any way they can. It will remain to be seen to see if Trump's decision to move him out will be beneficial or simply the loss of an important counselor in a world much more dangerous than progressives perceive, that is, until the morning after the next shocking terrorist attack on the world stage.

His philosophy of projecting foreign policy based on power and strength is against the principles of democracy and rule of law. He hates the UN but doesn't hesitate to use its power against weaker nations. This is hypocrisy. His unconditional support for Israel makes him utterly unprincipled individual. His gesture at uttering the phrase "so called Palestinian State" is a rare glimpse of his hatred towards Palestinian people. In short, the only thing that makes this man important is his being representative of the world's only supper power.

Thomas Miller, you wrote, "Bolton said he is against the INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT because it might mean that America could be put on trial for Genociding the German people by burning them alive in the 1940s. You can't fault his logic." That is pure, 100% historical revisionism. The Germans changed the rules of warfare when they started bombing cities. Let me show you how easy it is to distort history: In this article, it appears that Churchill mistook an "accidental" Aug 24, 1940 German bombing of London for a deliberate attack: _"The first German attack on London actually occurred by accident. On the night of August 24, 1940, Luftwaffe bombers aiming for military targets on the outskirts of London drifted off course and instead dropped their bombs on the center of London destroying several homes and killing civilians. Amid the public outrage that followed, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, believing it was a deliberate attack, ordered Berlin to be bombed the next evening." ["World War II in Europe - The Blitz." The History Place, 1998]_ However, no where in that article does it mention this earlier July 28 German bombing of Paris: _"On this day in 1940, the German air force bombs Paris, killing 254 people, most of them civilians." ["Germans bomb Paris, killing hundreds of civilians." History Channel, July 28, 2019]_ No one knows for certain if the German bombing of London was deliberate, or not; but the deliberate bombing of Paris less than a month earlier would lead any sane leader to believe that it was. That said, John Bolton is sane; and no sane American would support an international court, of any kind, making rules for his country, or its citizens, considering the miserable anti-American track record of international bodies. As an American I seriously question why we continue to stay in NATO. The Europeans have dramatically cut their military spending since the end of the Cold War. As of 2018, only 4 members of NATO were spending the agreed upon 2% GDP on defense spending while the U.S. spent close to 4% GDP on defense, by far and away the highest among all NATO nations. Likewise, the Europeans have let in millions of Middle East refugees which has put a strain on their welfare systems and has sharply divided the European public. Most European nations are heavily socialized nations which is only possible because the U.S. subsidizes your economies by providing for your defense. Likewise, it seems apparent that a sizable percentage of European nations are anti-American, screw us on trade (prime example Germany), and vote against us at the UN so how is it again that the Europeans are our “allies?” Personally I believe the Europeans have already made their bed so America should let them lay in it. Also, I find it interesting that Europeans constantly lecture Americans about our foreign policy failures and call us warmongers. A simple look at the last century shows that the Europeans started 2 World Wars and only U.S. efforts through the Marshall Plan and the formation of NATO prevented a WW3. So my European friends, please save your sanctimonious lectures and shove your anti-American bs where the sun doesn’t shine. Maybe next time when you get your tit in a ringer and call Uncle Sam for help we’ll tell you we’re busy and can’t come. Then you’ll finally realize how f***ed your entire continent really is. Cheers ✌🏼🇺🇸

Nate Hess To be fair, you were telling us that at the beginning of both world wars and leveraged your advantage to dismantle the British empire, so there was significant self interest in getting involved. The anti-American sentiment is completely irrelevant, the US is almost completely self sufficient at this point, they could cut off from the rest of the world and the world would suffer more. What I think everyone is butt hurt about is the fact that they are at the whim of the USA, this has become painfully apparent with the election of trump and you have gone from a consession based diplomacy to demand based, obviously quicker, but ruffles a few feathers. For the UK (were I'm from) it's kind of like we were once rich powerful and had the blazing hot wife and now our younger brother is now richer, more powerful and has run off with our wife and is now living in our mansion, whist we are broke AF 😂

Libertarian doesn't mean rolling over on to your back in the face of big authoritarian/totalitarian regimes. You can try to make your own system libertarian but this is foreign policy and the question is how you deal with systems that are clearly UNFREE and trying to invade your market while subjugating their own people. Don't be so naive. They don't have a free market so the other system intervened first! Them trying to profit from your market is already an aggression when their business is not even private but part of the state, controlled by the government. etc. They restricted freedom first.

But Bolton's real issues, China and Iran, his real case, is not the focus, in the presentation. On that the high power generalisation, by Bolton, is lost site of in the UK. NATO and the EEC and Oxford think the answer is deterence which they think closed down the cold war rather than two powerful armies and two powerful navies. The idea behind the Iran nuclear treaty was really the delusion, that if Teheran was allowed to develop a nuclear deterrent it create security rather than a license for non nuclear subversion and military activity

When China was autarkic and closed it led to tensions with the west that wanted access to its resources and assets. Once they opened up, it was US global multi-nationals and global financial interests that led the way in doing business in China. China entered the WTO because it was good for US global businesses! Now they pretend they were doing China a big favour. It is the US businessmen who get so much out of China! Trump is worried about the impacts of the policies of US MNCs in exporting jobs and manufacturing to China, so he is adopting economic nationalism to halt the process of hollowing out the US economy. Bolton though has another agenda entirely, it is a neo-con agenda of destroying rival powers to maintain a monopolar world dominated by the USA. This "Zero Sum Game" policy guarantees us only one thing, another WORLD WAR.

Although Iran manufactures 97% of its domestic needs, it imports 3% and this has serious implications for many people. Thanks to the brutal sanctions inflation has gone through the roof and many people would not be able to put food on the table if it wasn’t for the charities and NGOs. As before the gov will eventually stabilise the economy but it takes a year or two. There seems to be a lack of understanding amongst the youth as to what is meant by liberal-democracy and what aspect of a political system each term attempts to address. Very few distinguish between the academic definition of liberal-democracy and the neoconservatives interpretation of it. Without this understanding one would arbitrarily use each term without an appreciation of what it really means and more importantly one would fail to recognise the threats directed towards the very system they intend to protect. Giving a platform to neocons that are actively engaged in destroying the very institutions that preserve liberal-democracies is absurd. Furthermore, JB is a war-criminal. He should be trialed for his role in fabricating evidence and murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the middle-east. The only place that is competent enough to carry out a thorough cross- examination is the court of law. This is where there is sufficient expertise and knowhow to objectively cross-examine the evidence rather than listen to disinformation, deceit and rhetoric.

Double speak is saying deliberately ambiguous things to please everyone and be all things to all people. Lawyers do it a lot and this guy used to be a lawyer by profession. This guy is a dinosaur, a super hawk who played a key role in the original invasion of Iraq. Given that large portions of the audience will go on to be the "Intelligentsia" that make up our political classes in the future, I have to say that was an extremely disappointing debate. Whilst most students managed to begin with a reasonable question, no one really followed up and pulled John Bolton's responses apart. I know it is easier said than done, but a very bellicose politician came away from that debate without facing any challenging questions about the pro war/intervention policies that litter his inglorious past! If you don't challenge you are expressing tacit agreement.

Or, given the possibility that history will look kindly on Trump/Bolton transactionalism? In that sense these very smart students recognised an equivalent intelligence. I do agree though that the Court of the Oxford Union to an extent missed a valuable cross examination opportunity.

"If you don't challenge you are expressing tacit agreement." That is simply not true. There are plenty of other meaning to not challenging someone. Sometimes a person portrays themselves accurately in their own words and people can make up their own minds as to how they feel and will respond to it, without being a jerk.
