John C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Armisen on sculpture, The Beatles, and Moonbase 8

At the rate we Earthlings are going in terms of global warming, it seems pretty likely that we’re going to need another planet to live on at some point in the not-too-distant future. It’s something scientists and space programs like NASA have long been considering and working toward with programs like Biosphere 2. While the people inside these self-contained domes are doing important work, from an outsider’s perspective, it can seem pretty silly. (Just ask Pauly Shore.)
Tim Heidecker, Fred Armisen, and John C. Reilly definitely get the cosmic joke of it all. The three created and star in Moonbase 8, a new A24-driven series on Showtime launching November 8. Respectively playing Earth-bound astronaut hopefuls Rook, Skip, and Cap, the three capture both the big dreams of those hoping to walk in Neil Armstrong’s tracks and the casual ineptitude of those who may not ever actually make the trip. (As the show’s press materials suggest, it’s not Moonbase 1 or 2 or 3 for a reason.)
The A.V. Club sat down with the trio for a Zoom chat about the show, which quickly disintegrated into a ramshackle but hilarious discussion about visiting Easter Island, the value of sculpture versus photography, and the best Beatles song of all time.

@@arbitrarychemistry I think the most sympathetic person in it, Tim, is a centrist really. Obviously he has always been anti Trump? But in the other hand I did cut out a scene in which he is dismissive towards Bernie Sanders, for example. He thinks political problems could be fixed if we were all a little kinder. That's how I interpret him politically, anyway.

Stoked beyond belief for this 6 ep series. I have a feeling I’ll be wanting more when it’s done. Excited to laugh at and with these three and co! The Beatles (White Album) 1968 It was one the first pieces of post modern art, and Fred is absolutely right it takes all of those songs. None of the songs are novelty songs, if some of them are than all of them are. I’m a Sgt. Pepper guy, it’s not overstated either. I can make a case why it’s still in fact being underrated. But I can do that for anything Hopefully they develop the moon blimp for John C! Lol Peace and Love.

White album is so much better than sgt pep
@ENigma-um8zw
@ENigma-um8zw 3 года назад
@@corneliusg4905 you’re not wrong! it’s truly amazing, I love it, it’s technically ‘2x better’ than Sgt Pepper (one more disk than it), I love all the tracks on it even the ones others may not (hello Rev#9!). Sgt pepper is just an epochal change in popular music. It’s like listening to music post Van Halen I (1978) and hear shredding guitars afterward and be like what’s the big deal, well there was a time before such concepts were normal and became standard. The concept of Sgt Peppers isn’t as conceptual as say a Tommy or Quadrophenia but it gave birth to the concept of concept records. And it was the first time the Beatles or any band really fully utilized the studio itself as an instrument, performing in studio tricks and expert craft production techniques that would make performing the album live impossible (like Revolver’s Tomorrow Never Knows), it being the final album the band would make before they stopped touring. Which is why Pepper is so special it’s the band using the album as the medium to which they can travel everywhere, in peoples homes. A concept practiced but not utilized bc previous artists were and have since to become as big as the Beatles were, granted there’s the boy bands and the stars of the now and even the high pitch yells during live shows for beloved bands and artists today. Back in those days they didn’t have equipment loud enough so if the people aren’t going to the shows to hear the music that makes artists fidgety and through Sgt pepper they show the musical and social world just how it could be done. Ofc, All of these little sayings have become cliche to the album and its history because of all the ink spilled about the album and every innovative evolution of rock and popular music and cultural step forward it and many other releases were caused to make. So I’m not disagreeing with you, I may just personally value Sgt Pepper as higher or more deserving of acclaim in terms of its influence in all directions, yet the same could be said for their next album (The White Album, not counting Magical Mystery Tour as that was a UK EP before the US release including StarwbFields Penny Lane All You Need is Love to make it the soundtrack LP to) but the ‘white album’ too is just as important. It did so much and it still is one of the greatest 2 pieces of vinyl a person can own. I mean, It forwarded the push toward roots rock and humorous post modern pastiches swaths of folk and country and blues and ballads and little novelty ditties, the album as with the others, would go on and influence anyone who listens to it, even if they weren’t musicians. This isn’t the best time to bring up the Manson situation but even ol Charlie was able to find things within it that perhaps even the Beatles themselves weren’t even aware of. I still enjoy ‘The Beatles (1968)’/White album, as among my top favs of all time. It’s just if I had a gun to my head and had to pick, heck, I’d pick both of them and see what the gun does, I’d be fine carrying on within or without a head. Hah :D peace and Love, Long live rock n roll/long live Love&LIVE music!

Definitely life needs to leave the planet if it's going to continue. Best case scenario is life continues to exist until the Sun explodes. But could end much sooner with a micronova or nuclear war or anything. And yeah, human life could die out and another intelligence could evolve here. But after a couple rounds of that, Earth's chances will be over when Sun literally explodes and takes the Earth with it
@Deloria
@Deloria 3 года назад
The rate at which we are killing the planet will easily kill us way faster than the sun exploding. My concern is that we don't change our entitled perception and just go fuck shit up on other planets until eventually we run out of planets and go extinct from our own demise.
