is it just me, or is anyone else's favorite part, 'and it goes like this, the fourth the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift, and the baffled king composing hallelujah'. absolute favorite
So ... it gets you every time ... and yet you wrote it incorrectly. Here is the line as Leonard wrote it, with just the right number of words and beats for perfect rhythm. "It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah."
I don’t care what anyone says, John Cale’s version is the best one. The brokenness in his voice is what makes this song such a masterpiece and a perfect one to be used in Shrek.
I lost my Mom 10 years ago. I still think of her everyday. But now the sadness is replaced with loving smiles and happy thoughts. I'm waiting to see her again. I'm 68 years old.
My mother died aged 62 on March 31, 2023. I knew this was about to happen anytime soon, but kept listening to this song as it really helped me cope with it. ❤
Ma maman est décédée vendredi 21 juillet 2023 moi aussi je savais que cela allait arriver mais nous ne sommes jamais prêts à perdre sa maman elle avait 67 ans❤
Only someone who has been trapped in a relationship that has lost all intimacy will ever really understand how heart wrenching it is to listen to verses 3 & 4...
John Cale invented this arrangement of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and this is the version everyone else has covered. But Cale's rendition is far better than everyone else's that followed, because every other singer goes over the top, egoistically screeching and shouting to add "emotion" during the "hallelujah"s. Cale doesn't, and his version is all the more dignified and beautiful for it.
Pain is hard.. but we as a human learn from it. Suffering is sad. I pray she gets better... time.. heal.. tim lets us do that. Sadly factor not everyone gets out of pains.. we sadky must walk with it. Life is a humbling experience. I pray she is better by now..
Georgiana yeah, exactly. I mean, I like the song in general so I don't really have as much of a problem with how a cover of it sounds but *this* one has a certain sound to it that almost makes me melt. I think John's voice has a certain quality to it that does that.
"It's not a cry you can hear at night. It's not somebody whose seen the light! It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah!" That line in this song will always give me chills. So much emotion.
The chorus and build up in this song is literally genius. He starts off the build up normal at 1:47 and then an immediate surge of energy 1:50 for the rest of the build up culminating with a truimphant "Hallelujah" (1:56). And right after that he always has a collection of more quiet and haunting Hallelujahs (1:59) as if he is in deep thought about what he's singing about.
@@jaf00181 if your talking about Elvis Presley, he was not alive when this song was released. He died 1977 and Leonard Cohen released it on album in 1983/84. There is/was a hilarious fake posted on RU-vid 6 plus months ago. Comments were hysterical at times.
To Vic Deakins. My heart aches for you. To bury your younger brother has to be the worst thing you will ever go through. You have my deepest sympathies.
I thought this was the shrek one. I used to watch shrek 24/7 as a kid so when i looked up the other version i knew it didnt sound right. THIS is the version i remember
@@JameyLeanneCooper There is honestly no need to be so rude. The fact that Rufus Wainwright's version is the one in the soundtrack leads many people to believe his is the version from the movie.
The breaking sound in his voice is so authentic and what we all really feel. I have been meditating a lot and listening to the Holy Spirit. This is so true to my journey.
This beautiful song has been covered by several musicians While many did a wonderful rendition, no one can even come close to John Cale. He is absolutely brilliant ♥️♥️
I love Leonard Cohen, but this is absolutely the best version of this song. It makes me feel hopelessly broken and hopeful at the same time. That's real art as far as I'm concerned.
Nothing hits harder then when he sings, "Love is not a victory march, it's a cold a broken Hallelujah." Brings tears to my eyes as I sit back and think about every time GOD came through
And all the music dropping out at the end and all you hear is Hallelujah being repeated makes for one of the most powerful anti-climax's I've ever heard in a song.
Just came across this. Kim don't ever believe that you're not going to make it, that you can't succeed, or that it won't get better. That's the lie. NEVER GIVE UP. EVEN IF ITS A BAD PROGNOSIS. We all have a mission on this earth and lessons to learn and people to help and serve and love. You are valuable and worthy of great things.
"I Remember when I moved in you, and the holy dove was moving too, and every breath we drew was halleluyah" This part always touches my soul differently from other songs.
Not only did John create this arrangement which is better than Cohen's, honestly I think he has the best voice for it too. Buckley is great but he doesn't have the old bitter sound, he was too young. Cale's voice is deep and mature like Cohen's voice but smoother and technically much better. He doesn't do any exaggeration towards the end like many do, his voice is enough
+Cock And Ball Torture Not only do I agree, but I also like the piano intro in this version, as opposed to Cohen's (and definitely Wainwright's). It just sounds better, in my opinion.
A shrek moment that will always be remembered and never forgetable since it came out on June 18, 2001 It also brings back some emotional memories from the past and it's one of the best parts of Shrek
This is the version that actually plays in Shrek... but they put Rufus Waintrash on the album because he’s a Dreamworks artist. This is the best version by far
Honestly, I'm agnostic and as much of an atheist as I could ever be, but to be fair, this song is one of the songs that I can sing, get in to, enjoy the changes, and so on so forth. John has such an amazing voice to try and harmonize with, so that makes it all the more amazing.
+allasar relax m8, im religious but dont be so rude... i dont care if you are not... my religion tells me to be good to everyone out there but i dont do that cause the bible says that... i do it cause its right... you should too i think
I swear, this song is one of the best I've heard in a loooooong while. And, to add to it all, I didn't learn about it through Shrek. Take that, society. >:D
I’m 17 today I’m so grateful and happy to see another amazing year with my Heavenly Father and beloved his beloved son Jesus Christ thought I should wake up early and sing this to them God bless you all have a lovely day❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this song. Im not a religious man but i new where he was headed. He wrote many different lyrics for this song but this is the one he eventually settled on and it is the best one.
I love this song this is the only version that gives me chills I'm obsessed with the line "she broke your throne she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the hallelujah"
So pretty much Samson had all these awesome powers from God, and Delilah was a girl who he liked or was in a relationship or whatever who had been paid by a group of people to find Samson's weakness so they could capture him. She tried to get him to tell her and he said if he was tied up so she tied him up in his sleep but he broke the ropes (God strength power stuff) and eventually she got him to tell the truth, that if his hair was cut he would lose his strength. She she cut his hair when he slept and he lost his powers and was captured and tortured and/or killed
My favorite part is well the whole song lol but what really got me was " There was a time you let me know whats really going on below but now you don't show it to me do you?"
The happy melody, with the sad voice This type of music has not been seen in a long time The honesty of it is all it needs to be one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. They could be lying to me about what they mean but I’d believe every word
I heard this, and it made me cry. It reminds me of all my strife, and the rises and falls in my walk with God. Knowing how God feels for me, and forgave me and does to this very day. There is darkness in life but Praise Yahovah. Praise him for giving us life, testing every inch of our hearts to know us. The evils and sins we do that he layed waste to with an equally painful sacrifice. Giving up what he couldn't even fully ask of us through Abraham simply because he loves us. Praise him that years after so much pain he can sweep it away and heal you. That after so much pain you can have a loving bond stronger than iron. I never thought I could feel so sad with the main lyrics of a song being "Praise to God." I am convicted. I am humbled. Even in such a sad song there is this much love in it.
@connorleonard4047 no, it's not. It's a song about faith and it's ups and downs. The sex bit is a reference to king David and Sampson. "Saw her bathing on the roof" is a literal pull from scripture from when David lusted over bathsheba. She bathed outside, naked on her roof so David would see her. "She broke your throne" is reference to jezebel. "Cut your hair" was from Sampson. All 3 are examples of falling into sin through lust.
