John is like an angel, examining what our society is. And him saying that he's ready to die is a sign that his duty is finished. He is now wanted by God in Heaven.

There's something sweet about Del calling John "Johnny" when he's begging for the mouse's life.

This film is so poetic. The fact that John Coffey, a super powered, angelic being is presented as a larger-than-life slave made to carry societies burdens. It’s just such a perfect way to put it! This novel/movie couldn’t have been written another way.

The book is a masterpiece and the movie did it justice. That's a first.

The worst part about this 7:36 is that John isn’t only showing him things from Wharton’s perspective, but also the emotions that were going through him. And knowing what Wharton did to those girls, you can see why the reaction is so strong.

The importance of good rapport with prisoners and guards.. Del immediately tried to call for help when he thought Coffey would hurt Paul.. even though Paul is one of his captors and Del is on death row with nothing to lose. He also has nothing to gain by helping. He'd sit and watch if it was Percy. Another good touch by the writers.

He was scared of the darkness; that’s why the light is always glowing when he’s helping his friends.

4:30 Seeing Mr Jingles and Del reunite while a peaceful score playing is heart warming.

I'm surprised at how many ppl are watching these scenes in 2019 but never seen the movie

I watched this film once and I swore I would never ever watch it again. I'd like to think that I am a bit of a tough guy but this film broke me down. I have never seen anything like it probably the best film ever made in history. I myself also believe that there are angels and that guy took such a fantastic part.

There’s something about a bunch of hardened men standing around speechless and in awe as they are witnessing a miracle. Especially, when that miracle is in the form of a little mouse.

I love Paul's face as he's peeing in relief. I was watching this movie while everybody in my house was sleeping and I could barely stay quiet.

Going on what a lot of the comments have said, I'm inclined to agree that John Coffee was either an Angel or an 'agent' of god, sent to earth to survey and help where he could. The fact he has the mental capacity of a child actually backs this up. Children tend to the see the world in an innocent light until corrupted by outside influences. The fact that John is clearly an innocent, yet tortured soul, tells me he has been purposely sent to earth with the strong body of a large man, but the innocent, loving mind of a child. Afterall, no child could fight off a murderer or rapist. On the opposite side to this, adults tend to be less empathetic, sympathetic and kind. Once the world has broken the child out of us, we tend to give up on trying to right the wrongs of the world and come to some form of acceptance of, ''thats just the way it is''. With John never being removed from the child-like thought process, it would be much easier for him to remain a warrior of good. But it also explains why he is so damn messed up. Imagine a child trying to deal with the trauma of paedophiles and murderers - what immense damage that does to a child's psyche. It's hard enough to stomach it as an adult. Just my thoughts on the matter. :D

At 5:17 when John Coffey says, "I see it", and the lady starts crying and says, "What's happening to me"? That's such an emotional scene 😭

Coffey was a kind and loving man with a beautiful gift, and yet he was persecuted, punished, and killed for a crime he didn't commit. He deserved better.

This is by far the greatest film ever made. The man who played John Koffey deserves so much more attention.

I saw this movie way too young but my parents allowed me to stay because I think deep down they knew I would get something out of it. It was so intense for me and so harsh to view but I’ll never forget it. It makes me so emotional every time I rewatch it. When the mouse got crushed my heart was ripped out of me I couldn’t stop crying. Gosh such a powerful film.

This story is no horror or even a thriller, despite Stephen King’s reputation; it is undeniably a tragedy story, and man can it break a man down.

No matter how many times I watch this movie it gets me in the feels, hard, every time. Perfect casting, dialogue is just right, just a masterpiece.

By far one of the best characters in the history of writing to transition to cinema. He pulled it off quite well too. Made the movie what it was.

Michael Clarke Duncan was a great actor he was one of the few strong men who would not only frequently profess how much he loved his mother but how much he respected her as well! I believe tom Hanks spoke at his funeral and retold a story that Michael had told him about his teenage years when he joined a gang and how his mother reacted to his decision. Any fans here that haven't seen that video should look it up. This was truly an actor that will be missed.

The two girls could have been rescued at the beginning if they had screamed to call the parents, but the wild man who murdered them told them each that if she screamed, he would hurt the other. In that way, he used their love for each other against them and got them to cooperate with him. "He kills em with they love." THAT is the kind of video we need here on RU-vid in 2020. John is right: That's the way it is all over the world. We are watching goodness, beauty and loyalty, murdered by chaos while hiding behind high ideals. The Chaos that is trying to destroy America doesn't actually believe in love, fairness, and equality, but they can sure use them as a weapon against those of us who do, and it makes us unable to protect the many victims they themselves are right now creating.

I love Tom hanks, I’ve seen pretty much everything he’s done but Michael Clark Duncan made this film. It would’ve been a great film without him, but I can’t think of anyone who could’ve done better. It’s on my list of films I stop at when channel surfing. Can only imagine what could’ve come from him in future projects.

I'm inclined to believe that John Coffey has the shining. Keep in mind this is a Stephen King story and most if not all of his books are connected.

Man...it's been so long since I last saw a movie with Micheal Clark Duncan in it. I almost forgot two things about him... 1. How tremendously talented he was. 2. How unbelievably frickin' ginormous he was. I mean...**damn.** He was one great big freakin' slab of humanity, that guy. He also struck me as a very personable, affable, and humble guy in real life. Almost **all** actors have to work hard, hold down shit jobs to pay the bills, and really hustle to get their foot in the door and catch a break...but a dude like MC Duncan? A guy of that degree of mind-blowing physical carriage can't be easy to cast. Sure, there will be roles here and there where having serious performing chops *and* being crazy big would work great for him-- i.e., "The Green Mile"-- but how many of those come along? He certainly was brilliant in this. A less talented, or less intuitive actor could have easily assumed the role of Jack Coffey and ruined it by playing it as some one-dimensional, "Simple Jack"-type nonsense, or just the latest in a long line of cringe-y, hackneyed "Magic Negro" characters. But he really conveyed Coffey's humanity, and the tragic nature of his life, with tremendous honesty.

They definitely weren't going to have John Coffee suck the "bad" out of Tom Hanks' character like he did with the others.

I don't know what to write. This has always been one of my favorite movies, ever since it was released. I have seen it multiple times, I still get something new from it everytime I watch it and it has never gotten dated nor old for me. Wow!
