John Colter: The FIRST Mountain Man

Considered by many to be the first Mountain Man, John Colter came west with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. When they headed back to civilization, Colter instead chose to stay behind. He’d live with the Crow tribe and go on to be the first American to cast eyes on the Teton Mountains, Colter’s Hell, and what’s now known as Yellowstone National Park. Later, as a fur trapper, Colter would survive numerous close calls with the Blackfeet. At one point, he’d be stripped naked and forced to run for his life. What was Colter’s early life like? Was he really a Ranger under Simon Kenton? And how would Colter finally go under? #history #wildwest #western

Your channel is pure gold man. Would love to hear about French-Canadian voyageurs like Radisson. I myself am a descendant of Charles Michel de Langlade, an Ottawa war chief and French fur trader who fought for the French, then the British, then the Americans and even faced off against George Washington in the French-Indian war.

Josh you need not thank me for listening. THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME! I can't imagine what wonders John Colter saw, also can't imagine being chased by a bunch of Blackfeet warriors! He had to be tougher than woodpecker lips. Seriously, Thanks ever so much for all you do! Entertaining as always.

Man in the Wilderness was a great movie. John Huston and Richard Harris made it definitely worth watching. Thank you for your work!! Rod Steiger in Run of the Arrow depicted a white boy being chased by warriors as probably taken from Coulter's life.

You are right. Man in the wilderness with Richard harris, was one of the best movies there was. I found the revenant to be an exercise in futility. I'm sorry but Leonardo DiCaprio, is not even in the same league as Richard Harris. And will never attain it.

John Coulter the first mountain man, and yes I did spell his name correctly. My great, great, great grandfather I met a Daniel Boon relative at a rondeau years ago and he questioned my great status he said it should be 4 greats, but wrong because I looked up family history, you know how those Boos I mean Boons are and as far as sally, I believe she was of Cherokee origin and son Hyram married a indian and had six children which I am related. Just family history, doesn't make me special.
