The song is about the death of the American dream, which is even more unrealized for our kids 40 years on since he wrote it. I pray they can revive it.
I remember seeing Mellencamp in Evansville, Indiana at Roberts Stadium at the height of the Scarecrow album in 1985 visiting from south Texas at the height of the rise of his career. I was originally from Indiana and was a budding singer/songwriter, I wanted to be John Mellencamp. He was such an inspiration. He did the entire concert with no opening act. He was amazing! It's crazy to see him now at this age, still playing with amazing musicians and singing those timeless songs! Thanks for sharing!
