John Deere 9510R tractor is down. Can I get it to run just a couple more days?

In this video, I've got a 9510R that started my service call with a ruptured coolant hose. That snow balled into oil in the coolant, fan drive repair, turbo noise, and a broken exhaust manifold stud. Just need to get this tractor up and running ASAP to run just a couple more days, then we can go further into repairs and fix it right. Going to repair the fan drives, replace the oil cooler, flush the cooling system, and replace all the rubber coolant hoses.

I’d be disappointed if my tractor had this many defects at fairly low hours. Nice to watch a good mechanic. Funny seeing one of these new tractors start up with no smoke. Remember the old 8640 I had for a while, wow that thing used to rev up all by itself and blow a bunch of black smoke, I liked it.

My favorite way to flush the cooling system on these it to remove the drain fitting in the radiator and plumb a hose to the hot water pressure washer and run the engine while hot water flows from bottom to top of the cooling system. I usually pull the lower rad hose off once in a while to really drain it quickly too.

You fellow are at the top of your game, it’s not a case of just replacing parts it’s knowing which parts to change, many men would have missed the turbo problem, something you spotted as soon as the tractor drove up the field. Great video and very interesting ❤

To help lift the fan drive in place you can use a small strap anchored to the charge air tube on one side and hook the other end to the crane on the other side run it across the bottom of the pulley essentially making a basket. The aluminum tube should be strong enough to support the weight. As you pick up on the winch line it will help lift the drive assembly. I use that the same set up to lift belly pans back in place on heavy equipment.
@michaelladenburg3792
@michaelladenburg3792 4 месяца назад
Those fan drives are a good time by yourself for sure! Don’t know if you have seen it before, but I have had two positive battery cables fail on my 9460R. The splice that feeds the master fuse opens up after heat soaking and you will have loss of voltage to the cab. Wasn’t the easiest thing to diagnose as it worked completely normal once it cooled down a few minutes.

You truly are a Master Technician. And, your narration is as good as your mechanical skills. What amazes me is that during disassembly of anything on John Deere equipment, it involves removal of what seems like dozens (or more) fasteners of every size, length and description. It amazes me that they all go back where they belong without any "spare" ones left over. I would have to have a Fastener Wrangler to keep up with what went where. Great attention to detail.

Head gasket failure due to too low of liner stand out height. And while the head is off you'll probably notice that the head is cracked. Gotta love 13.5's. I rebuild tons of them. Easy money for me but it sucks for the customers. And you better replace those leaking exhaust manifold gaskets while you're at it. I love your channel. Keep it up!

I will agree with you on the tools you listed that you said, you’re not a mechanic without those tools. Retired marine technician here. Agree 100%. But as I got older and the younger mechanics (notice I said younger mechanics, not young bucks) came into the field, the tool that most were missing was COMMON SENSE! Yes common sense! It was funny how they knew what was wrong, but didn’t have the common sense on what tool to use or how to approach the job and get it done in a reasonable amount of time. Those drill bits, are they Cobalt? For all my years in the marine environment I always used better quality HSS drill bits but always suffered. They dulled up fast with stainless etc. Then I switched to Cobalt, also pricey, but what a HUGE improvement. Only problem with them is they are a little more brittle, so you have to be a little more steady and don’t bind or they break quicker. They are more suited for drill presses. Oh, and by the way, I had the magnets, from 1-5 pound pull, but bad part with marine environment is a lot is Stainless Steel.

Thanks for another great video ZK. It was most interesting and informative and enjoyable. Wow. Lots going wrong with this beast. Never did heard how many hours on it. Looked it up. Expensive beast around the $385,000 mark and 510 hp-wow. Never did hear or see the black stuff in the water tank and hoses before. Can understand you wanting to get all that cleaned out first and then running water thru the system to get it nice and clean. Good job with new thermostats and all the extra pieces. Wonderful you checked the clutch drive and fan drive because it was on its last legs. Good you got all that replaced. (((Don’t know if I used the right name it but I know what you had to do at least))). So you got things done and just have the turbo to go, but you said it was not as noisy now. So maybe you will not replace that or not. Up to you I guess. Big operation on this one/wow. You got you way worked thru it so the farmer can use it for now. I am amazed at how you got the immediate issues taken care of away from the shop and going again. Will be waiting to hear on the turbo situation ZK. Thanks for sharing all of this with us. You are an amazing technician ZK. You take care. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
