The John Deere 9510R is back! Time to get the turbo, EGR cooler, and exhaust manifold fixed right!

The 9510R made it through spring planting! We were able to get the oil contamination in the cooling system under control with replacing the oil cooler (oil cooler tested bad) and the fan drives replaced so it could finish up this spring. The tractor had to finish spring with a terrible noise coming from the turbo, an exhaust manifold leak, and a cracked EGR cooler. With the weather window we had there was not enough time to stop and fix the rest. Now I can go back and fix it right. Got to replace the turbo, remove the exhaust manifold, and extract all the studs, including one that is broken off in the head. Also, in the middle of repairs, I get called to go look at an 8R 370 that had a full blown engine harness meltdown.

Thanks for another great video ZK. It was interesting and informative and enjoyable to watch. Wow. You are having a busy busy schedule. Of course planting time so any tractor breakdown that involves a planter is fix right away type call. I do understand. Well, anyway nice going with your dodge ram truck pulling the wiring harness tractor back to the farm and getting that farmer a rent tractor to use until parts are available for his. Believe you said your dealership was looking for parts. Now back to the original tractor you were working on that needed a turbo and a few other things. Getting all that apart proved a challenge of sorts. Broken manifold studs are the worst. But knowing you, you did a fantastic job of getting it out. Yeah!!!!!!! Then pressing ahead. Lifting that turbo up there was no easy task. Was a learning experience seeing all the stuff you had to take off to do that. Once again, you were a great teacher and we learned lessons from you on the process. Wow. Not easy. Too bad you couldn’t use your crane. Low roof in the shop but it was air conditioned so that was excellent!!!!!!!!!!! Nice going ZK on the one. You sailed through it in good time plus helping with another tractor. Hang in there. My compliments to you for moving right along on the turbo project. Wonderful John Deere service again by a highly qualified technician. Nice 👍!!!!!!!! Thanks for teaching us again. Was a good one to watch. Thanks ZK. The Iowa farm boy. Steve 😊👍👍👋🇺🇸🇺🇸

So do you have a 2nd mortgage with the Snap on guy ??? Saying that customers don't understand the tools alone much less the knowledge to correctly fix things today.. Which reflects in the price or bill for a job like this.. Great job keep up the good work.

Really enjoying your content as I used to farm in the 1970"s and 1980"s. I do have a question regarding the exhaust manifold installation, why did you not use anti-seize on the studs ? When I was still working, I used that on anything that might be an issue in removing later on. After farming I drove truck cross country for26 years and we used anti-seize many things that could be hard to remove later and I can attest to the power and usefulness of this product. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.

How lucky for the stud to come out In the 90’s had a Cummins in a truck with broken manifold bolts ( not studs) Stripped it all down, spent hours drilling the bolts out, think some got heli coils in. Came to put manifold back on ( it was a 3 section manifold) and couldn’t get some of the bolts in Ended up taking it back off and drilling the bolt holes bigger in the manifold. That worked a treat, it was as though the sections had shrunk. The strange thing another lad had to do the exact thing to its sister truck after breaking the manifold bolts Never happened again on them two trucks Keep up the good work

I had a new JD turbo. The tech put it on and it kept leaking oil on the return line gasket. I tried. The tech tried. We tightened till we thought it was going to break the 2 bolts. 2 new gaskets. No change, still leaking. Turned out the new turbo had the threaded holes were not tapped deep enough and the bolts were bottoming out with about 1 mm left as clearance at the gasket surface. Our solution was to grind the bolts shorter. So much for JD reman quality. I can put a turbo on but you got to pay a tech to CB one out and programs the computer to calibrate it. 😡😡😡

We have a spray here in New Zealand that actually freezes things. The idea is that if you spray the bolt or stud that it will shrink it enough to break it loose. I haven’t tried it yet but am very interested in seeing if it works.

Mayhew makes a REALLY good stud extractor, I use it on manifold bolts all the time and itll pull them right out, plus its impact rated and its lifetime warranty, my Snap on guy carries them on the truck. I think its somewhere around 120$ but 100% worth it. It can even grab some small broken stubs unlike other extractors ive tried. Also give Spyder drill bits a try, ive been using them recently and really like them. Havent needed it on manifolds yet but have drilled out spot welds with them fairly easily

For the exhaust manifold studs I often have very good success by running the nut in to hits the spot with no threads and then keep going tighter and 99% of the time the stud will turn in tighter just a little then you can spin right out with the impact, no heat required.

Left handed drill bits are good for broken bolts and studs. Only because the rotation of the drill will try to wind the broken piece out rather than forcing it deeper into the hole.

I'm sure you already know, and probably have done this but to clean out a oil contaminated coolant system I'll use dishwasher tablets or powder. Run it for a few hours and drain it, flush 4-5 times with straight water before a final fill with coolant. Works like a damn charm every time.

Next time removing stud bolts. On the back nut, use a line wrench, open end round off too quick. If that doesn’t work, Mac makes a stud removal tool that looks like the Chuck of a drill. It’s used with a box end wrench and the harder you turn to remove, the tighter it grips the stud, what a dream to use!! And a lot faster when labor is involved of course vs double nutting etc. But when using the Mac tool you will need new studs when done. And the rolling taps are good, I’ve used them, but I prefer the thread chaser from Snap-on or Sears (which I don’t think Sears has any more) both are identical but Sears is a LOT cheaper!

Heating the studs; can you describe the physics metallurgy of heating the stud? Thermal expansion is change in length over length and the HOLE is always longer around than the plug-stud. Consider heating the hole and cooling the plug-stud like with carbon dioxide snow.

Looking at what you were going through trying to line up and drill out that broken stud, and since you have to go through it more often than you would want to, would it make any sense to rig up drill fixture, a plate that bolts into the opposite hole across the port and holds a drill bushing at the correct distance? You'd use drill bushings so you can swap sizes and keep the drill going in line. Admittedly, you'd need a different plate for different spacings, but you could probably put 3 or so different center distances on one plate by clocking them around the bushing hole. Anyhow, that would help with the alignment issue and keeping your drill straight. Might be something to discuss with your dad the machinist.
