U r right! The only reason I bot JD because I found this conversion kit. I’m about to do my first oil change. Guess what? My conversion kit just arrived!
For me, I use the old john deere's cuz they're cheaper to fix & maintain cuz the hoods are fiberglass & not plastic. The hood on my dad's lt160 was in ok shape cuz it was barn kept by my grandad/original owner & it stayed like that till 5 years ago when he upgraded & my dad got the deere. We kept it in a barn & you cant lean on the hood at all or it'll crack & shatter into bits. On the other hand, I've got 3 1980s john deere GT's & all of which still have their hoods in ok shape still. I was able to find a low hours garage kept 1982 212 & had all original paint, I know this cuz it had all original good year tires & one of the rear tires still held air!
I agree, great for anyone that wants a quick oil/filter change, but I prefer it with it gone and all the oil is changed not to mention the cost savings!
Sorry to hear you have to pay that much in Canada. I bot my conversion kit for $25 US dollars in local shop. Yeah it was special order. No taxes here in Delaware
Thanks for sharing this information because I asked a dealer if there was any way to drain all the oil and they said no. Now I see there is a kit to convert, I'll tell me friend that has one of these style engines.
Great video. Its sad that JD wants you to pay $40 for an oil change that only changes 25% of the oil. Then they get you to throw away that expensive looking hunk of metal to get rid of the system. JD is getting to be like apple. Always trying to suck money from their customers.
@Nick's Pranks Using your number, 0.8 quarts (25.6 oz.) is 38% of total capacity (2 liters = 67.2 oz.). So, we are changing 38% of the oil every 20 hours. By changing the system, we can change 99% every 20 hours for less money. Less waste with less cost is a WIN--WIN.
That new oil filter is like $10 at a local parts store, they use that filter across thousands of machines. The same filter works for my dad's lt160 Kohler command. Filter Number AM125424. same filter that fits my Kohler Magnum18.
Great video man. I did the same thing except I just bought the filter adapter from Home Depot for $1.89. It's just a standard plumbing type adapter. My work has accounts with cap part stores so I order my filter from Auto Choice, it is currently $3.85 my cost and 2 bottles of Penzoil 0w40 synthetic. Whole fiasco cost me about $25 CDN. I didn't bother with the drain as I simply continued using my vacuum extractor. However I'm sure the drain pipe could also be found for a reasonable amount too.
The price is ok if your in the atates, by the time it arrived to Canada with the exchange, duty etc it was nuts! It will save in the long run, but yah once you know the fitting sizes, much much cheaper!!!
My E180 quit running after 25hrs. Unfortunately, COVID came and I got a bad case of it. The mower sat for two seasons before I could get it to the dealer. Ended up putting a new engine in it $1,460.00 total. Cheaper than purchasing a new mower. I told them I didn't want the quick change on it.
Hi and thanks for the video. I'm also from Canada and consider easy oil change filter a ripoff. I tried lately to get parts from Amazon, none of the 2 parts were available. After many research at Ebay, parts available were only ship in the USA, not Canada. Finally I found a place to purchase in the USA, from Alabama, and proud to name Smith Tractors Company Lte. Parts and shipping cost me $65.67 CDN, almost the same price as the easy oil filter from John Deere. No regrets as I will be able in the futur to change oil the ''Right'' way. I will use Locktite RED treadlocker (as seen from other similar video). I can't understand using Easy Oil Change system for 5 years and never discard old oil. That must be killing an engine fast. No cars will run a long period of time like this. My 2020 Kia Sorrento must have at least 2 oil change a year (change oil filter included of course) in order to assure Manufacturer's warranty, this done at the dealer.
Wow, sorry to see you paid so much for those parts. I'm in Canada too (Eastern Ont.) and I was into the local John Deere dealership yesterday to get parts for this job. The AM131611 drain was $16.81, the MIU13767 nipple: $3.12, and the filter: $10.68. All genuine JD parts. Total with tax was $35.28, including a 60 cent envirocharge. Interesting in that I bought a "genuine" Briggs & Stratton filter on Amazon also this week for another machine. It was $18.71, and it's made in India. The John Deere filter, as mentioned, was $10.68 and made in the USA. I know where I'll be buying all my oil filters from now on. :-)
Actually you don't have to change just 25% of the oil. The BEST oil change, would be to use the quick oil change system and drain ALL of the oil (drain is on the right side of the engine). The quick oil change filter is about twice the size of a standard filter, so it maybe better to keep it. (if money is no object).
This is a GREAT vid concerning this topic. Had a J.D. S170 lawn tractor delivered just 2 days ago, and this will be the very first mod I will make. This 30 second oil change BS is a cash grab by John Deere IMO. Not only do you have to pay 40.00 for the filter and one quart of oil, you also have to figure that by leaving one quart of used oil in the engine crankcase at all times is going to ultimately shorten the life of the engine as well - therefore a new lawn tractor. Great thinking on the part of the finance guys @ John Deere.
Unfortunately I purchased one of the Quick Change filters and used it just 3-4 hours earlier at the 50 hour servicing. Once I run it for another 50 hours I'll use this tip so I don't have to pay an "arm and a leg" for another filter. Very useful instructional video. Thanks for all your John Deere videos! Edit: So here it is at the end of another 50 hours and followed your video about how to do the conversion. I cursed John Deere for the drain plug "square" shape I had to remove. Initially I had to loosen it up with an adjustable wrench as the 9/16 you recommended "only" worked once it was loosened up. Come on John Deere couldn't you have designed it to use a standard hex shaped bolt head instead of the "square"? Your video definitely showed a lot of oil leaking out of the drain plug and on the other side where the 30 second oil change contraption existed. So much oil leaked I couldn't keep ahead of it. I used up all of two smaller rolls of paper towels and had to run into the house for a larger roll. I ended up drying up all of the leaked oil that I could find with paper towels then used up using paint thinner to clean it up the rest of the way. When all done my baby ran more smoothly than I ever remember but I suspect it had to do with new plugs, fuel filter, air filter, than just the oil filter system change-over. Thanks for the video. I would have had a harder time just reading the written instructions I downloaded from www.greenpartstore.com.
I just switched mine over.i tell u what I got Castrol edge full synthetic it made a huge difference it's so quiet smooth its onlyb1.00 more I think then the jd oil
I swear, I was thinking that, myself. I buy 5-quart jugs of Mobil1 for $20 on sale at PepBoys every Christmas. One jug would get me through a year, I'd say.
Thanks for the vid! Question- will the treadlocker keep any oil from leaking from that drain connection. I assume you’re talking about Locktite or Permatex - what strength did you use? Thanks.
John Deere should include a conventional oil filter and drain tube and make the EZ change feature an option. $40.00+ to change only 1/4 of the oil is just crazy.
As mentioned on another yt about conversion, EZ change is some EZ change for John Deere. But not for me. Will be doing the conversion at 1 year/50hours, likely June.
