I just converted mine this week. Drained a large butter tub of old black oil out of it. Don't understand why anyone thought the ez change was a good idea. Good way to shorten the life of an engine. Converting it back to a regular filter and drain plug is definitely the way to go.

Very informative video. A couple of comments, the filter nipple in the MIU13767B kit looks like it has internal hex so you don’t need to use that internal pipe wrench. Also, my old Craftsman lawn tractor has briggs engine with the remote oil change hose that clips to cooling fan shroud. Works great. Part numbers are 594200 for the hose (with end cap and clip) and 796532 for the hose nipple that screws in where drain plug does. The clip never busted, or the hose, in fifteen years. This isn’t necessarily easier than your quick drain plug, but the built in hose is helpful and the cap is up high where I don’t worry about it coming loose. Thanks for posting this video. Happy Trails!!

Can I put in the quick change big filter then drain(adding drain plug)? If I do how much oil do I add(including the .8 quart in the filter. I would be draining ALL the old oil out bit would have the advantage of the big filter plus added volume.

That oil gadget, the non-adjustable tie rods, and that plastic part which serves as the gas gauge and anchor for the rear mower deck stablizer convince me that JD is now the king of junk box store mowers. I had a 73JD 110 and the only plastic parts on it were the little handles on the choke and gas levers. I sold it working fine 3 years ago and I bet it is still running!

Changed our JD E130 from a quick change to a standard oil filter this past weekend... mower is 6yrs old and we were swapping out the quick change once a year. I was really surprised to see how clean the oil was .... was expecting it to look a bit rough as the quick change only replaces a portion of the total oil volume at a time. .... overall impression is the quick change set-up works well.... but it's expensive.... glad i did the conversion as it is somewhat cheaper.

Brad, Love your videos. Why in the world would John Deere design this "quick change" oil system when as you have shown doesn't allow you to drain all the nasty engine oil. There is no quick way to change your oil and it shouldn't be quick. Probably the most important maintenance you need to perform. Not only does this system not work, the cost is ridiculous. Thank you for what you do.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
Hi Ron, that is a question for the real smart person or persons or even an entire team of John Deere employed engineers that designed it, LOL!!Obviously in my opinion, John Deere is not worried about how long they will last but how much more they will make selling you more machines.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Hard to argue with that conclusion. Of course, JD would likely say, since it makes it "easier" to change, folks less inclined to change it will do so with EZ change. I don't buy that argument, or the Easy Change system. I haven't converted yet, because local dealer gave me a free at home service using the EZ change system. It was because of a delivery snafu they wanted to make right. Wasn't going to turn it down. But, I have the drain pipe, filter adaptor, filter and oil ready to go next time. I cut open the EZ Change filter he left with me. The actual filter rather small, all the engineering takes up more space. Really do need to puncture a couple holes in dome to drain the oil inside for recycling. Btw, nice job on the conversion video. 👍
@jameslomenzo1139

JD came up with that idea so more people would change their oil but it's a bunch of crap, fiter is $55 and how many of these crap filters are filling up landfills.

@@faxmen09 Since I'm an engineer, my opinion would be that marketing got involved in the design process. I've lived that life, and honestly have wanted to slap people with these ideas. If they really wanted to make it easy, there are 2 things they could do: 1) Design the filter to be replaced without spilling oil or having any of it hit the frame. 2) Make it easy to drain. Here we have a conversion kit that does most of that. This design is criminal.
@faxmen09

@@cgilleybsw I have converted since my last comment here. It was kind of a messy process but part of that my fault. Glad it's done, but wish there was something I could do with the EZ Change parts besides toss them. Wonder if local JD dealer would want them.

Hi Brad, love your videos been watching for a while now and am getting heaps of good info & tips. I've just bought a new S120 which has the quick change system and although I think it's a great idea as well it has its flaws as you've pointed out. Could I not just buy the drain extension tube and install that then when doing an oil change, remove the old quick change filter, drain the rest of the old oil through the new drain tube, then put the new QC filter back on and top the engine up with the correct amount of oil. Would that work or would it be easier to totally swap the filter system out as you've done in the video. Keep up the great vids. Cheers Pete.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
Yes you could but the other point of the video other than making the engine last is it is much cheaper to change oil and filter with the kit. The QC oil filter in my area is $50 plus you will need more oil than what is in the QC filter supplies. A normal oil filter goes for $10 to $13 depending on where you purchase it. It’s much cheaper in the long run to change it all out. It’s up to you. Thank you for watching my videos and the kind comment.

I don’t understand why put that tiny oil filter on in place of larger ez change filter. I don’t see why you can’t drain the block. It has a drain plug like any other small engine. It just needs the extension to make it easier.

The what you call "tiny oil filter" is a normal size oil filter used on 99% of all small engines that have oil filters. Why would you spend up to $60.00 everytime you change your engine oil and oil filter plus another 1.5 qts of oil. When you can change out the system back to the original way they are suppose to be and save soooo much money in the process!! You can get the normal oil filter for as little as $8.00 then add the 2 qts of oil. I would say on the average your saving 3x the $$.
