I have had a couple of requests to do a review/overview of my Gator. Well here it is. Its been one of the handiest things to have around the farm, it gets used daily for feeding, hauling water, moving cows, getting to and from the woods for cutting and hauling firewood and so much more.

Looks like a good machine. We've got a 2010 grizzly 700, last I checked it had just under 12k miles and all of them were hard lol! I've roped calves out on pasture, pushed bush and anything in between. Same as yours we always have fencing supplies in a milk crate strapped to the back. Love your vids, keep up the good work.

Thanks Ethan... After having a UTV I wouldn't want to go a day with out one. Very handy machine!

We bought a used 850D almost two years ago at an auction. That thing is as handy as a shirt pocket. Daily pasture rotations, temporary fences, etc it's perfect. Building fence it's handy too because it's got enough umph to pull a trailer with all my fencing supplies on it - hi tensile wire, wood posts, t-posts, concrete, etc etc. And calving season - it's awesome - can carry what I call "the maternity bucket" which has tags, banders, etc in it as well as a spotlight and most importantly someone else to keep the momma off of me while I tend to the newborn. If I knew how handy they were, I would have bought one years ago.

We have two Gator 6x4's on my neighbors property. One is a gas model with the basic package and a canvas top, and the other we just picked up last Saturday, and that's a Yanmar diesel. The diesel has a horn, turn signals, brake lights, hazard lights, electric dump bed, and a hard top. I too prefer the solid axle for hauling, and these two do not have a rear suspension. It uses the flotation tires as a suspension. I was using a old Suzuki LT4WD atv to work on the property until we bought this. This was definitely a upgrade to the atv.

I have an Gator Hpx 4x4 and the only thing about it is the ground clearance. It gets hung up quite often. But other than that it's the best piece of equipment someone could ask for. Glad to see someone do a review on it :)
@larsonvalleyfarm

I couldn't agree with you more! The ground clearance is definitely its drawback!

Gator is the handiest thing we have also. Built a trailer for the fence supplies and chainsaws and brush cutter and it pulls it just fine until it gets too muddy as ours is a 2x4 94 model with solid frame no rear suspension.

I use an ancient Attex ST400 as my go to vehicle. Since it floats it saves me a two mile trip to cross a canal to a field I lease. Got a finicky 400cc two stroke and its own amphibious trailer.
@larsonvalleyfarm
@larsonvalleyfarm 7 лет назад
never heard of one, you should make a video of it. Also how hard would it be to put a 4 stroke in it
@cleatrampler
@cleatrampler 7 лет назад
Yes I really need to make videos Easy to put a 4 stroke in it, or just find a used max or argo atv. The two stroke has more get up and go and the benefit of keeping mosquitoes away.

They great to have around. I have a Cub Cadet with Yanmar Diesel. Love the thing. You could put a dump cylinder on it and make your own brush guard very easy. The only thing I would get on the next one is power steering mine can be a bear.

they are pretty cool machines. When they first came out I was skeptical of them. Still not sure how much I would have used it back in the day because we were spread out over 20 miles or better but if I were running animals i could see a bunch of uses now.

I love my kubota. Bought new in 2008 has about 1000 hours. And your right. There is good and bad perks about both machines. I mainly like the hydro on the kubota for when kids drive it they let off and it stops. Although I still have my 2000 gator but it just has the spray rig in the back.
@larsonvalleyfarm
@larsonvalleyfarm 7 лет назад
the kubota was nice, I may end up getting one again someday
@jefferytrice9180
@jefferytrice9180 7 лет назад
only other bad thing if you are pushing or pulling hard with it you have to much pressure on trans you have to use the release to let you shift trans that doesn't always work the best.

We thought about getting a kubota diesel.One issue was it was unbelievablely slow!!!! they are handy around the farm tho.

25 top speed same as my gator. I know the newer ones are faster (both brands) but I dont know how much faster. 25 is fast enough!

My grandparents have an HPX with an electronic 4wd. What they failed to do is check and change the diff fluid so now it is stuck in full time 4wd, which makes steering a pain. Also, even though it is a great machine I would like it to have a solid drive shaft transmission instead of a belt driven clutch. Reason being I got it stuck in a creek because the belt kept slipping. If John Deere would make it a Shaft driven, it would be a perfect machine.
@larsonvalleyfarm
@larsonvalleyfarm 7 лет назад
Very good points you made...shaft drive would be nice
@loganrobertson2459

I contacted JD and for the front diff it would be 1500 just for the clutch kit. The gears and everything are fine but the clutch is trashed.

I know this isn't the place for this question but..... What chains do you recommend for a skid steer 2-link, 4-link, brand?
@larsonvalleyfarm
@larsonvalleyfarm 7 лет назад
I think mine are 4 link, but I haven't put them on yet. I will be putting them on tonight. I bought a set of truck chains to fit a 31x10.50 tire. When I buy another set I am going to get them from Bobcat, I think they were between 150-250 per set. I only run chains on the back tires. They make a world on deference in the snow.

Nice review. I see this was like 5 years ago. Do you still have the gator as ND how many hours on it now? Still going strong?
@larsonvalleyfarm
@larsonvalleyfarm 2 года назад
Yes, still have it. 1500 hours on it give or take. It gets used daily for feeding, moving cows, hauling firewood, etc. Only thing I've done is oil changes and a new set of tires

@@larsonvalleyfarm wow that's some good service out of it. I'm looking at a 2013 gator 3cyclinder diesel 4x4 with 940 hrs on it. Hope I get some good service out of it if I decide to go that route.

photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipMGyxPaFlVPtWMhMYBWO44vIrbk2T-6YpT4dYiv Oh, I've had the trots all day and still can't tell friend from foe so here I am watching some older videos in my semi-misery. We have an even older 6x4 with the brush guard and the power lift! I think I'm a couple/three hundred lbs. over capacity when I load it up with rock though cuz I have to kick in some human lift to help it up. I'm a little short of 48 inches across the dump box but there's a poly liner in there that maybe accounts for the shrinkage? I always wondered how they ran for other folks after seeing one at an auction pickup one time. That thing was the least friendly starting beast I ever saw! Ours is a little cold-blooded but once it's warmed up it purrs all day so I decided if this one ever gives up the ghost, we'll need a trial period with any other prospect until it proves it's not fussy on running.

One more thing, I notice you always address your machines as "he". Everyone else I know says "she". I always call them it or he. My bobcat's I call BOB and BOBBY (863 and 763) and my 450c dozer I call Mr Case. If I am lucky enough to get my dream machine the 963 I will have to come up with a name for that.

lol! My wife says i call things he and she a lot. Maybe it all depends on the day weather its a he or she! lol
