Thanks Greg. Here in Australia That part is also very dear to buy. It was very creative & simple repair job. I will soon be doing that on a D120 very soon. As they say in Oz land " Well done mate". Keep the videos coming

It’s really sad that they put out a product that breaks this easy. It appears to have been a poor design prone to breaking for a long time and no plans to make it better. Thanks for watching and leaving me a comment!

Thanks a lot for this video Greg! I just repaired my D130 and went 9 1/2” to give it a bit more length and to ensure the rod holds when I start mowing and bouncing around. Appreciate it, really saved my ass.

John Deere were good quality, but after being sold by home depot, that's gone down some, and yet parts are still expensive as ever. Just had to change out the deck on our D125, and used the opportunity to do some maintenance, changing oil and oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, and the hood has been a problem like this for about 2 months now. Just broke off like this when I was going over a big bump made up of roots. I'll definitely be doing this fix! Thanks for the idea!

Yes I would agree with you about the quality. I follow the maintenance schedule exactly. The only thing I do differently is use mobil1 10W30 for the oil. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for leaving a comment and good luck fixing the hood!

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Yes, it’s a definite engineering flaw, maybe on purpose. Either way, they should have fixed it even if they kept the same design just different materials.

I was told avgas at airports is pretty good, but I'm not sure they would sell it for mowers. The avgas octane is pretty high and it's filtered to make sure there is not water in it. Meanwhile, I use StaBil with every tankful. See you in the spring, I have to get the battery out of the mower now!

I had exactly the same broken pin on my D170. But my Deere dealer said it's covered by warranty and, better yet, the replacement part has a metal pin exactly where your ingenious repair places it.

Greggs shop, I want to let you know both my pins were broke off and I did end up drilling and tapping those spots a 5/16-18 thread and screwed in two 3/8 shoulder bolts that I cut the heads off at a length of about 9/16 length (I turned them off in a lathe) I put thread locker on threads. I don't know if it will help any but it made me feel better haha when I screwed them in I had my 9 inches. It seemed pretty strong, I put my hood back on and it feels real solid. Thank you for helping me out with your idea I just tweaked your idea a little to suit me. Thank you again. Mark

Yes, I do. They are so cheap for a $2000 mower. I also had a problem with the engine starting, running for 30 seconds then stalling. I found that if I loosen the gas cap it runs fine. A new cap is $59 bucks, so I just drilled a tiny hole in the cap and it hasn't stalled since.
@GregsShop
@GregsShop 6 лет назад
+barry wilkinson no kidding about the gas cap. I know for sure mine is vented. Yours may have a manufacturing flaw. That was a good idea to make your own vent in it. I do all my own maintenance on mine and have owned it since 2011. I make sure to change the fuel filter every 50 hours and I only use non ethanol fuel. I also use Mobil1 10w30 . Let me know if you make the mod to the hood pins and how it works out for you.
@rvkubotaman
@rvkubotaman 7 лет назад
Greg, my tractor which is a different brand did the same thing, cheap ass plastic parts instead of metal in important stress areas. Your right how can they maybe get a few more dollars from you when it breaks. I did a similar thing then the plastic cracked more and finally I threw the whole hood off and away. Hopefully yours will last. It looks like yours has more plastic than mine did. Good fix.

I have the same issue on my D125. I noticed all of the material between each of the broken pegs and the curve, so I thought about using a rod, but didn’t have anything thin enough. I’m thankful for your video showing that 1/4 “ rod works well, but what size was the drill bit you used? I don’t have any long bits, but A trip to Home Depot will take care of that. I’m subscribing.
@GregsShop
@GregsShop 4 года назад
Hey there! Thanks for commenting. I used a 1/4” bit that is 18” long. Should be able to get that at Home Depot. It is a tight fit for the rod but that is good so it doesn’t vibrate out. Also, you may want to check with your local John Deere dealership on that issue. I heard that may be covered under a warranty since they know it to be of poor design. Just a thought. If you do get it covered under warranty, let me know. I’m going to call them myself this week. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Have a great day.

I don't know of any place near me in Michigan that has no ethanol fuel. I use only Mobil 1 in all of my motors, car, tractor, snow thrower, etc. My gas cap is also vented, but for some reason the vent must be plugged, so the hole works great. Mine is a 2013 D140 and it does a great job. I change the fuel filter and oil once a year. I will let you know how the hinge pins work out. It will be a while as its getting cold here.
@GregsShop
@GregsShop 6 лет назад
+barry wilkinson yeah no mowing for you for a while. I'm in Florida and have to mow every week. Even in the winter. Non ethanol fuel here is available at Wawa gas stations and chevron. If you are near a marina most boats require non ethanol fuel. It's more expensive but I only use it for the mix fuel and mower.

Greg, your video got me about 95% the way there. The only part I don't understand is you pushing the rod through to engage the other side. The rod needs to be 9" or some other length? Here is where I'm at, I drilled the the hole out but due to alinement issue I had to drill it twice. Now my rod is loose so I was thinking I will epoxy it in place. Question if I epoxy it, will it work at 9" even?

It should work but I would use a JB weld type epoxy just because of the heat.

Is that center section where you put the rod through hollow already? If so do you know what size it is to begin with. I was thinking about tapping that out to 5/16 thread then cutting the head off a 3/8 shoulder bolt and screwing that in there instead of drilling all the way through. I only had 1 of those pins break off.

Hi quick question at the end of the video there is a wire that runs along outside the frame with the white connector does that connect to any thing or does it just hang there. just got this mower from a friend and saw it hanging there but i cant find any where to connect back too
@GregsShop
@GregsShop 3 года назад
Hey, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The wire I think you are referring to is the switched power that goes to the lights on the hood. There should be a connecter where the lights are. It makes removing the hood possible. Thanks for watching! be happy to help if you need more assistance. - greg

@GregsShop
@GregsShop 4 года назад
So I changed plans in the middle of making the video. I planned on using the threaded rod and nuts to make it pivot but that turned out to be much more than was needed. I ended up using a smaller round bar instead. Sorry it was confusing. On a side note, check with your local Deere dealer. I heard this may be a warranty item like a recall type thing because of the bad design. Anyway, hope that helps. Let me know what you discover.

Thanks, Greg. I'm doing this to fix the hood on my D140. I already drilled. I'm a little confused about the final assembly. Is the trick to ANGLE the hood slightly to get the 1/4" rod in one of the holes first, and then use a screwdriver to push the rod into the other hole as well? Or am I making too big a deal of it, and it's easier to get it started in the first hole than I think?
@GregsShop
@GregsShop 4 года назад
Yes that is exactly how I did it. Get one side in and pushed all the way over then drop the other side in and use a screwdriver or pliers to slide the rod over to engage the other side. You may have to trim the rod to be able to accommodate that movement. Hope that helps.
