what the heck would make the battery go dead while you were mowing? that's the first time I heard of a mower battery dying that way. how old was it? did you notice it having trouble before it died? did you ever ask a battery expert why it would die that way?

The piece of property I was mowing is rough. My guess is the bouncing caused on of the lead plates to break but I’m still not sure why that caused the engine to shut off being it will run with the battery disconnected. Just a guess on my part.

starter has nothing to do with stopping eng running it is a fuel or spark issue or a valve problem normally some times a wire problem need to tbl shoot this more to pin it down.

I know the starter won’t stop an engine that is running. The reason the mower stalled was due to a plugged gas cap vent causing a fuel supply issue. I didn’t realize I had that issue until after the video was posted. The battery wasn’t that old and it started just fine earlier that day and that’s why I suspected there might be an issue with the starter. Thank you for the comment and suggestions I appreciate them.

My JD LA 130 is 16 years old. It has the 24 Hp twin engine. Just bought a new battery. The other day. No click. No turn over. No start. WTF! Watch this video. Checked the fuse, Checked the battery cables. No crud. One side was loose. Tighten the bolt two rounds.Checked the switch under the seat. Pushed together. Checked PTO switch it was down. Checked the brake switch caroded. Took a brass bristled brass. Cleaned the connections both ends. Put the switched back together. Got on mower. Pushed the brake down turn on to start. Started right up over and over again. Battery fully charged. Thanks, again. It took 5 minutes! Shawn

If your holes are plugged up on your gas cap. The engine will turn over but won't fire up. I took a pin and poked the holes to clear them. Put the cap back on and it fired up. The cap had white powder in the holes from the ethanol. Shawn

I had the same problem in the past. A plugged vent hole creates a vacuum in the tank and stops the flow of fuel to the fuel pump.

Gary, are you my brother from another mother? Because forgetting to put the plugs back in, buying an undersized Battery and forgetting to get new plugs while at the parts store is exactly how I would of “fixed” my mower.

If you need to mow your lawn right away, could you have jump started it and then changed the battery later?

I was in the process of mowing when the engine suddenly quit running and that’s why I didn’t think the battery was the problem. Since the battery shorted out and caused the engine to stop running I doubt jumping it would have helped. The field I was mowing is rough and I believe that’s what caused the battery to fail.

Thank you for the comment! If the mower sat for a long period of time it may be the carburetor is clogged from bad gas. You can try removing the air filter and squirting a little gas inside the carburetor to see if it will start. If it starts than most likely you will have to clean the carburetor. The other thing I would check for is spark by removing a spark plug from the cylinder head and ground it against metal and crank the engine. This will at least let you know if it is a fuel or ignition problem.

I've got a John Deere lawnmower with a Kawasaki engine. It'll turn over but it won't start. it's getting fire and plenty of fuel. I can see the fuel piddling in the carberator but it looks like oil is mixing in there with it. Any ideas what would cause that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, partner.

If you see puddling in the carburetor more than likely the float needle valve is not seating properly allowing fuel to continually flow flooding your engine. Check to see if the spark plug is wet and check your oil for signs of gas in it. Also, have you noticed if your gas tank drains while it parked? I would start there. Thank you for your comment.

@@joseacosta1337 always verfi spark --remove plugs insert screwdriver in plug wire hold near metal spin starter do you have a spark ???? if yes remove screwdriver insert spark to wire touch metal spin starter do you have a spark if so look for fuel prob.

I got my motor to crank over...but it rotates for a about 2 to 3 secs..than stops..

Check for loose or corroded cables first and then check the state of health of the battery. If they are okay then it could be the compression release is not working. If it is not working hopefully it is due to the exhaust valve being out of adjustment and not a broken part on the camshaft.

I have a similar mower, the L120. it had a dead battery when I got it. I went and bought a new one and it ran great, ran it all summer. then last week I went to mow the grass one last time and it won't start. the fuse between starter and solenoid was burnt, so I replaced the whole fuse and box. still nothing, so I got a new solenoid and still nothing....it won't crank at all. put a charger on battery and it said battery was full. I am stumped. any idea?

For the fuse holder to melt there must have been an excessive draw of amperage. Check your wires for a short and make sure they are tight. Then check the wire going to the solenoid for power while the key is turned to the start position. If there is power than it’s likely the starter.If there is no power check the ignition switch and all the safety switches.

I have a sabre 5425 and it cranks but it wont start it started like a month ago while stored for winter but not now I don't know much about fixing mowers do you know what I can start with to look at? Thank you

Remove the spark plug and put a little gas directly into the cylinder. Reinstall the spark plug and try starting the mower. If it fires than you know you have a fuel supply problem and not a spark issue . Next pull the fuel line off the carb and crank the engine over to verify you’re getting fuel to the carb. More than likely it’s going to be a dirty carburetor giving the age of the mower and that it has been setting with gas in it.

Working on a John Deere LT133, mower starts and runs for about 45 minutes to an hour and then dies and wont start up again, it happened a couple of weeks ago but it started up after sitting for a week.we changed the carb, plugs, coil and it still wont start.

Check the fuel tank for debris. I had the same problem with my L130 and it turned out to be the rubber from the gas cap deteriorated and fell in the tank. At times it would block the fuel line and stall the engine. After setting for awhile it would start.

Check what he said to and then check and make sure you're carburetor flap isn't sticking shut or open and check the carburetor bowl Clean off the prongs on ur ignition relay box or test your ignition relay box to see if its still good in working condition I'd think most those John deeres are made the same

See if your fuse box wiring is loose take you some thicker gauge wire and burn each end to expose the wire and shove it were your fuse goes this way you'll never burn out a fuse in the future
