Thanks for the tip on the bolt on the top of the engine. I have a Craftsman DYT 4000, but my clutch doesn't have a D-spacer so I was having trouble torquing it until this video. I recommend everyone use caution as to not loosen the top bolt, but I figured it was torqued much higher than the 50 ft lbs of my clutch.

One doesn't have to go to the top of the engine for that "in case you don't have an impact wrench" piece of advice. If you look....right behind the head of that bolt you wanna remove is another structure. It looks like a really thick washer with 2 flat sides. You grab on to the flat sides with an adjustable. Doing that will keep the the shaft from turning ...and at the same time you undo the bolt with your socket. That flat sided "washer" is called a "D" something or other. Hope this helps. For me it worked great. My joy quickly dissipated when the clutch didn't slide right off like in this vid. Well it's been on there since I bought the tractor in 2001(gt235) so it's is seized on there. Off to the repair shop it goes...couldnt pry it off. At least down here in TN they will accept the new clutch I purchased from Amazon w/o a hassle.

I usually have to have the choke all the way on for the mower to run right. I replaced the carb with a brand new one. When the mower is hot I can run it wide open with no choke & it’s good to go. Even starts back up easily. When it’s cold I have to start by spraying starting fluid in the intake or it won’t start regardless of what I do with the choke. If it’s not one thing it’s another, but at least I’m getting the grass cut!

Hey MM, great video, I first watched your video of how to replace the transmission belt. Followed along (without an impact wrench) and did not counter turn with bolt on top of motor (probably should have). I held the top spindle of the clutch with a pair of channel locks. Removed the bolt under the clutch. But the big difference with my result is the whole spindle that holds the clutch came out. It has a slotted grove, so it only went back on one way. Put it all back together. (Did not put deck back on yet) went to test it, Pulled the PTO engage switch and nothing. My whole housing it turning. The top part of the clutch where the wire goes in is turning with the portion below that connects with belt. (Only turns so far until it hits the belt guards). I did not have to remove the belt guards because the whole spindle came down, so was able to get transmission belt on and push the assembly back up. Any idea on why mine came apart differently when removing the bottom nut? And what I might have done wrong putting back together? Thanks for your help. I appreciate your sense of humor.
@MowerMike
@MowerMike Год назад
Ok so the top pulley closest to the engine is for the drive belt. That will always turn unless you put the parking brake on which loosens up the belt. The bottom pulley is the PTO and should only come on when you pull the blade switch. The shaft it bolts to has a groove on it and a square key (rectangle piece of metal) goes in it to keep the PTO on it. Maybe that fell out? Let me know if any of this helps
@danculhane7959
@danculhane7959 Год назад
@@MowerMike Hi Mike. Makes sense. I took apart and made sure keys were there and lining up. Seems to all be ok. Got it to engage and the mower Lully at the bottom spins when engaged with PTO switch. The piece right above it where the wire plugs is not in a stationary position. It is turning too as far as it can until the magnet/coil hits the guard. Maybe it’s supposed to be move like that but? I made a quick video of it so you could see but not sure how to share the video so you can see it. Thanks, Dan

Our L130 has the Koehler 23 HP engine. Getting to the crankshaft nut on the top required us to remove the cover around the top of the engine before we could remove the flywheel cover. Once there the PTO clutch bolt would still not break free. We bound the flywheel with a wood block to break the bolt free. Also, the anchor strap provided in the kit did not align with the mounting bolt hole on the frame. We used the original strap. Easier to put this on after the new clutch is installed.

Thank you in advance, for any response...

I would remove the deck and check all the pullies by hand on the deck and under the mower to see if you have any restrictions. If they all turn free then I would make sure the carb is clean and then if it still is bogging down check compression. That engine maybe just wore out. Good luck I know it can be frustrating

I just recently picked up a white gt2150 that has an electronic pto. The tractor is exhibiting a no crank no start. I believe the key switch is good and I’ve tested the starter solenoid and it is good. I got it running by putting 12v directly to the starter. When the tractor is running the blades are always engaged no matter the position of the switch. I checked the resistance of the switch and it tested good. Wiring to the clutch is good too. Do you think that something is wrong with the clutch on the electrical side causing the tractor to not crank due to a safety feature?

Edmundo I can sure relate with that frustration. The PTO hooks to two wires that come from the back of the mower and they tie to a little connector. If that connector is gone you can just splice them direct to the two wires on the PTO or use different connectors. I checked my one Deere out in the yard and the PTO wires coming from the mower are orange and white. You will just need to try some trial and error to get them lined up. Good luck!

@MowerMike Год назад
Look at the bolts and see if the threads are damaged, if so get a new bolt. Or tap or chase the threads in the crank to clean them up. If you tried forcing the bolt in you may have stripped some threads. Do it with the PTO off when you work on it
@joshtipton6820

what do i do when the new pto doesn’t want to screw onto the crank? seems like not enough threads
@MowerMike
@MowerMike 2 года назад
If the bolt and PTO are the same size as the original it should synch it up on there as you tighten it. Or you can just get a longer bolt

Thanks. Simple enough. My problem Is that I am chewing belts and this is the last pulley not replaced. Can the pulley be serviced separately?
@MowerMike
@MowerMike 2 года назад
Well the PTO isn’t a pulley. I suggest checking your other drive pullies and make the top of the transmission. Also check your belt guides to make sure they are not rubbing. Good luck I know it is frustrating
@richardblumer4349
@richardblumer4349 2 года назад
Thanks for responding The mower belt pulley seems to be one assembly with the electric clutch. If that pulley is damaged is it removable with ease. I bought a Kevlar belt and when I change it I will be sure to check the routing and keeper pins Thanks

What led you to know the clutch was bad? I recently blew my drive belt on my simplicity broadmoor 20/50. I replaced the drive belt, put everything back together, started the mower, and went to engage the switch, and there was nothing. I checked all my wires and everything looks normal, but not sure if the belt shredding didnt mess something up in the clutch? Never had this issue before. Hopeing it's the switch, but wanted to get your thoughts on it. Thanks for the time,

Umm "Man status" Ladies have tools too my friend : ) and one doesn't need to be a genius to use and turn tools or power tools for that matter. Just for reference you do need to remove the deck to remove the PTO Clutch; It's attached to the mower deck and they semi overlap. Love to see anyone remove it without removing the mower deck. Additionally typically pto clutches are faulty or damaged whether it be in the barring or grinding with in the gears. Someone times men hit things when driving a mower with a beer. The clutch then does not just fall down easily it's then a PULLER is required they can rented at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts for a refundable deposit upon the return of the Puller or tool. This is also important the bolt cannot be just tightened down it has to be torched to a specified weight on the John Deere. Typically 53-55ft.-lbs. Torch wrenches are available at the same locations.

I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ru-vid.comUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

Show me how.

Liked the video except when you say "maybe you haven't got the 'man status' to have an impact wrench." Some people don't have much money for tools. Sometimes you may be out in the field, or at a buddy's, or working out of town and don't have access to all your tools. I'd say if you can get it done without proper tools, you likely have more "man status" than the guy in a comfortable garage with plenty of tools to make the job easy. Other than that good video.
