He’s brilliant isn’t he. I dealt with dementia with my mum, it was constant day in day out for about 5 years. She regressed quite rapidly. She went through a phase when she though I was my dad, which was a bit awkward. She then regressed to her childhood, and finally she didn’t know who I or my siblings were, it was awful. It’s a terrible disease, and to be honest it was a blessing when she finally slipped away. But here’s the thing. About two hours before she passed away, she suddenly grabbed my hand and said goodbye rob. She hadn’t known me for a year. I feel at peace with that.

@@barrybarry5803 well I applaud you for that , it’s so hard to do, personally I found it very distressing to see my mother regress so much, especially as she became quite aggressive at the end. But it affects people in different ways, no one is the same.

@@archibaldchimpin The point hes trying to make is that dementia can actually be a calm and peacefeul death because of the short memory span and how the indidvidual is oblivious to whats going on around them. Its not like getting eaten away by cancer where you are constantly in pain and decaying.

Nora was a cool person. I got to know her a bit a few years back while I waited on a client who lived nearby. Lydon would walk past, grunt hello on a good day, decent fellow, not mean or anything like that. Nora and I spoke in German (She's German by birth.) so that likely was a bit of why he kept his distance. I am saddened to read about her dementia - not fair to such a person as she. After her daughter died, she took in, cared for her grandkids... as I said, cool person. Glad Lydon has stuck by her side - good on you, John. Well done!

I don't like the man because years after his fame he was sitting in an expensive London cafe dressed in his hunting gear talking to some toff and complaining of the youth of today choosing not to vote. That is, these young kids see no point given Liberal / Labour / Con are all working for the same people keeping that status Quo, but millionaire Lydon now (despite his millions coming from fans while he preached anti-government and inequality with every breath) didn't like that notion. HE wanted the conservatives to stay in - so he could continue drinking £12 cups of Earl Grey in that cafe. Prick. Phoney. Liar. Member of the Establishment. Sorry for his wife of course. My Dad suffered the same fate.

Me too. Lost my mom last year, but she suffered from dementia for about four years. The last year of her life she was bedbound as well, which was probably for the best because she would have been a danger to herself and others if she was still ambulatory.

We are taking this on right now. My father who was a doctor of tropical medicine for years and retired two years ago is beginning to show the first signs of dementia. He can’t look after himself properly. My sister goes to clean his house every week and every week the place is a pigsty. She recently turned up and could smell gas outside the house. She let herself in and discovered that he’d left a gas burner on without being lit. It had filled the house with gas. Luckily it was heavier than air and had settled on the ground in all the rooms of the house. My sister open4d all the doors and windows and switched all the overhead fans on and the standing fans too. My father was ashen faced and looked unwell. My sister made him his favourite lunch and he wolfed it down and some colour returned to his face. My Sisters man decided that he looked so grey because he’d been exposed to gas for so long. It’s a worry and we don’t know what we are going to do with him.

All the best to Nora and your family, John. Of course, your work has influenced my music and your general belief in “someone simply being themselves”, has had the biggest impact on not just my music, or writing, but how I approach society. However (knowing you will probably never read this anyway) I will still send this message, from one human being to another who has watched (multiple) loved ones suffer from the demon of Alzheimers Disease, and I can empathize, (none were my significant partner) but still, it’s a heartbreaking process that supersedes any silly debates or disagreements. It can rip your heart in two, however, your force of character will find a way though it as it always has. I’m pretty sure you’d agree that you know no other way. So from a fellow musician, and every person sort of fella, I wish you all the best though the unbearable struggles that you all are enduring.

Its bloody hard John - but your love for Nora is inspirational - I'm fortunate to have my soul mate for the last 40 years. I read your book "Anger is an Energy" and very similar thought process to you. I'm caring for my dear old Mum (92) and regardless of age, dealing Alzheimer's is a shitty thing - especially when they don't recognise you anymore. But I like to think that locked deep inside she does - sadly it just can't show through anymore. As we say down here mate "Kia Kaha" - stay strong - you are a pillar - and if you need to lean on Rambo I'm sure he won't mind at all. - RESPECT.

He's become the boring old fart he railed against in his youth. If he's not bleating on about how he lost his memory when young he's now bleating on about how hard it is for him looking after his wife. Well Mr Lydon I work with the elderly and at least you have cash to look after your wife. Most people don't and just silently get on with it. Dementia is tragic and all too common.

The reason “most people just silently go on with it” is because they have the luxury of privacy in bad times. They aren’t famous so they don’t have the media and fans prying into their personal business asking what they are up to.
