I don't _dislike_ it but the seeming non-stop celebration of the "spirit" of every single nation once conquered/colonised by the English has started to become a bit wearisome. In fact the hypocrisy going on is just off the scale. Imagine the uproar today if a straight white Englishman celebrated the English spirit!! :)

There is no resemblance at all, bass line, structure, chord progression, or anything obvious. The intro riffs are wildly different. Convince me. Glen isn't even playing on the finished version....even his performance on various demos bears no resemblance. Are you sure you are quoting the right ABBA song? I'm sure Glen would rip off ABBA besides that....and he would say so I'm sure just to troll interviewers and the punks....

@@LucyOLastic The synth line in SOS that alternates between the root note and the octave higher. The part that follows "...why should I even try to go on..." Glen explains in his book how he was having lunch in a pub while taking a break from writing Vacant and SOS came on the jukebox. He took that hook from the chorus of SOS and refashioned it into the main riff of Vacant by having it alternate between the octave above the root and the 5th, rather than just alternating between the root and the octave. In SOS, the hook is not very prominant - in Vacant it's the main feature.

@@Itelkner I get what you mean and how he would have adapted the line. On the original there is grace note before the octave. It's as you say, barely prominent. As for the structure though, no. But interesting to listen to Abba's arrangements a bit more closely and cool that Glen actually quoted the source, revealing his pop sensibilities. I'm glad however that they were tempered and stripped to basics in the Sex Pistols to get that full on charge, no contrapuntal basslines, no frills. In a different band it may have been less impactful, more like traditional Mod-ish R&B power pop. The early demos with Chris Spedding showed how close they were to being "trad rock."
