What does it mean to be a “practicing Christian?” That’s the question that Russell Moore and his guest, author John Mark Comer, consider on this episode of The Russell Moore Show.

Dear Russell, I read about you in Tim Alberta's recent book. As a non-Christian I would like to express my admiration and support of the work you do. I've watched a couple of your shows and enjoyed your guests and the conversation. Your love shines through. 🙏

As a Christian, I appreciate your comment! I also appreciate how Russell and his guests talk honestly about us and our churches.

Mr Moore I really enjoy your show. When the young man was talking about these chaotic, new churches, I think they dont have lasting appeal because they are a show. They do not feel real to me. I need my Sunday morning peace. I attend an Independant Methodist church. It is beautiful, the sanctuary is dimly lit and it is peaceful. We do have our moments when the praise band rocks out, but they are countered by old hymms and peaceful piano music. Our congregation ranges from 90s to infants with lots of preschool and grade school kids. We follow a traditional order of worship. From time to time I go to the Catholic Church with my daughter. I love their service. It is ancient and despite what many protestants believe abd fervently preach they do know Jesus. He is the main focus of their service. Anyway I really do enjoy your show. Thanks for being thoughtful and leve

Hospital workers are often working nights & weekends… how can the church better at reaching that group & helping them experience Sabbath w/a very atypical work week?

Do you have others in your profession that you can come together on a day, Tuesday etc. and share a meal together, pray and create a Sabbath time? ‘Practicing the Way’ series has a podcast and small book about practicing Sabbath. I know it helped and challenged me to step out of my own ideas 🤷‍♀️ In your profession you need some sweet Sabbath rest because you beautifully serve all of us ❤❤

I appreciate the effort put into editing the material. However, I believe that the unedited version would be more constructive and clear. Could you please provide the unedited version? Thank you.

@@richhalmekangas8231 Hey Rich, thank you so much for your suggestion. I have read the book, just as you recommended, but I'd still like to hear the unedited version too. John Mark is an amazing communicator, and I believe it would be good for this audience to listen to his complete train of thought. Just my two cents.

@@ir2743 thanks for the insightful comment. I, like you, found both his commentary and nuanced insights extraordinary . Engaging in this level of The way, leading to the Truth and finally resulting in a spiritually existentially led Life , is so freeing from dogma and rhetorical concepts Roman’s 12 :2-5

Someone once told me “I don’t need to practice it, I learned it and have it down pat. I don’t practice piano either. I just play it now.” I loved it…lol not a fan of the phrase “practicing Christian.”

We practice everything in life to learn and grow… no one just plays a piano without practicing to be able to play…. I absolutely understand how practicing seems unusual in this context because I thought the same until I let God show me my need ♥️

John Mark Comer kept mentioning sabbath rest, over and over. To quote Andrew Farley, I really believe he's "flirting with Moses while cheating on Jesus".

I've been listening to John a lot and he really pushes that need for "rest" but I haven't heard it in a legalistic was but more of in a "We really need it" kind of way.

In all of the books, interviews, and teachings I’ve heard by him. He means most all his instruction by living our life the same way Jesus did when he was here on earth. Jesus took time in solitude with God. Soon as he was baptized by John the Baptist it says he went to the desert place the “eramos” when he was on the mountain after teaching 5000 he went away to be with God. Christ himself sabbath still and took days to rest and to enjoy Gods favor and grace. A lot of JM teachings have to do with literally doing things Christ did in order to find a deeper relationship with God. For most people just going to service Sunday and praying and reading the word doesn’t develop an intimate relationship with God over decades. Most people want to know him more. By doing the same actions as Christ we are able to connect deeper with the Lord our Father and experience him in a way we weren’t before.

@@CharlieCaballero Just google their name, city, and search their address. Then type the address into Zillow to find out what they paid for their home. I could post you the link I found, but that would be doxxing. It will take you 45 seconds to find it yourself, though. Ol' Russ has himself a nice million dollar mansion in Brentwood, TN. Selling out pays well, apparently, even for reverends.

When describing Contemplative prayer, they left out biblical examples of it. I can find examples of it in Buddhism and the New Age Movement. That should be a sign for true Christians to avoid it. Prayer in the Bible is communicating with God. You do not communicate with someone by sitting in silence and repeating a word. To be a practicing Christian, take the advice of Philippians 4:6 and Galatians 5:16, communicate with God and be obedient to His lead. Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. and Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

Sadly we believe prayer is just talking to God… sitting in silence and listening, contemplating on Who He is and desiring deep intimacy with Him is my heart’s longing.
@FollowerofChrist1234

@@mrf1002 To pray, one must have a mediator. That is why Christians pray in Jesus' name. He is the only reason we are able to communicate with God. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. A Buddhist, a Muslim, a Hindu, an atheist, can all sit in silence, contemplate on Who He is and desire deep intimacy with Him. That is why this teaching is wrong and dangerous. It removes the need for Jesus Christ. That is why there are no examples of Comer's practice in the Bible, because it makes less of Jesus and not more of Jesus.

I’m sorry but my relationship with Jesus includes listening and it’s not a religious practice it’s a sweet time with my Savior. . Oh He walks with me and He talks with me 🎵❤️
@FollowerofChrist1234

@@mrf1002 It should include listening and Jesus speaks to us through His Word. But Comer teaches something different and leaves out Jesus and The Word. From the book: “It’s just that you reach a point in any relationship, but especially with God, where words and even thoughts can no longer carry you forward toward intimacy. They bring you so far but not all the way. They may even hold you back.” Pg. 51 This is a false teaching that silence carries you forward in your relationship. This is a false teaching not in the bible and is making less of Jesus and taking people away from Jesus. Again, anyone can sit in silence. So, if silence can deepen your relationship, then anyone can have a deep relationship without Jesus. That is a lie.

@@FollowerofChrist1234 if you take some time to read Comer’s teachings it’s all scripture based or I wouldn’t be in agreement. I’m truly not hear to argue, I just believe you are misinterpreting what he is saying . God’s blessings on you as you continue your journey with Jesus 🙏🔥
