This is one of the most comprehensive John Mayer knowledge-centric interviews ever. He is the best and most generous interviewee ever. There’s a lot to learn and love about him here. I love it all. I love him

Good conversation and not sure why I missed this when it was posted. Many topics were covered here and it is always interesting to get John’s take on all genres of music. He certainly has come full circle in all aspects of his life and it is a great thing that he is more comfortable in his own skin. He is the best of his generation and certainly my favorite artist and guitarist. His songwriting is also next level. A complete artist in every sense of the word.

I hated Mayer back in the early 2000s. My brother was a huge fan and I thought he was a no talent ass clown. My brother dragged me to his live concert during the Continuum tour and... I was literally blown away. I am a huge JM fan now, seven live concerts and counting.

continuum??? so lucky!!! I feel this though and unless you were at a good age or at a good place in life where you understood a lot of guitar, you really weren’t gonna understand him in anyway besides what they played on the radio we didn’t have access to the “clips” we do now for exposure. I definitely feel lucky though to of been turning almost 18 around the battle studies time and following him ever since lol

Dean Delray that song is gold! I saw him play it in columbus twice and I’ve been captured by it every time. I really appreciate this interview by the way, the part about needing more force than you expect to make it is something I needed to hear as I want to be a musician myself. I heard John Mayer back in like 02/03...I knew him as the "Your Body Is A Wonderland" guy. I really didnt enjoy him and I never gave him another thought. Then one day I sat down with my dad to watch The Crossroads Festival on PBS. It was 2007 and I was looking forward to seeing the blues legends (and Jeff Beck) do their thing. I came away being blown away by Mayer's live version of "Gravity" and Ive never been surprised by him since (including when he started touring with The Dead). As famous as he is, I dont think many people give him the credit he deserves for how talented he really is.

hes phenomenal. the thing is, by 2003 when we made up our minds he was gonna be that “poppy your body is a wonderland guy” he hadnt done anything yet to prove himself. come continuum and battle studies, coming up on 30 years old he really became a likable and more so relatable guy on top of being a guitar legend. he had shoes to fill and he did it in time. by 2007-2009 Mayer was the definition of cool.

Dean, part 1 of Let There Be Talk with John Mayer is one of the best interviews with Johnny I’ve ever heard! It feels like a conversation between 2 people who have a mutual admiration and respect for one another and it flows freely! I LOVE the way Part 1 ends with John admitting he’s deep into Springsteen now. I can’t wait for Part 2 when you and Johnny talk about The Boss! Thank you soooo very much! ♥️🏻♥️ I'm now a subscriber, thanks to this interview because this episode means so much to me! Throughout the years, John has revealed himself to be very human, very kind, very honest and a beautiful man inside and out, in addition to his talent and brilliance. He's one of the most genuinely endearing people I've ever encountered. The connection you and John have in the interview brings out more of the same from John and also shows you to be forthright and endearing.

I saw the John Mayer Trio at the Ryman and I knew what it was, all blues. Apparently 70% of the audience didn't realize that. As the show went on teenage girls were dropping like flies, walking out. By the time he played daughters, his only hit of the entire show, the venue was probably 30% empty. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. haha.

This is a GREAT interview! I love logging in and seeing an over hour long video. I'm in it for the long haul when I love the artist! It was a very insightful conversation about John's past and how the perception of what fans had of him in the beginning of his career vs now. He's a truly gifted musician and has contributed so much to the music scene in the last 20 years. Its interesting to hear John's perspective from the other end and about how he was feeling when he came off as arrogant and like "that popular guy". Brings him to the same level as fans and cool to hear how self aware he is. Hes a really good guy that got a bad rap by default because of some women he dated. If we were all judged by who we dated while young and just starting our our adult life, then pretty much everyone would have made mistakes. What gets you back to peace and sustaining stronger relationships with people is how you grow from each experience. You can tell John takes 1 important point and brings it back around for full circle moments.

everyone judged Mayer when room for squares broke. Very few dudes and no musicians liked him. I was one of the few dude musicians in my circle that did like him early on but if you would have told me that 20 years later he’d still around and widely revered by chicks, dudes, and musicians alike as one of our generations guitar hero’s I woulda said u crazy. It’s right around the time he started doing the blues trio thing a few years after he broke that guitarists started to notice

I was more or less ambivalent about him, but he's just so goddamn good at the guitar. I don't necessarily go out of my way to listen to John's music, but I'll always check out what's going on. I'd say he's basically become an iconic journeyman comparable to Clapton in terms of a singer/guitarist that can sit in with *anyone*

Thanks for the great interview, Dean! I found you by way of Marc Maron! My wife introduced me to John Mayer about 5 years ago. I also learned his music in reverse beginning with Born and Raised and Paradise Valley working back to Continuum and some Room For Squares. Being a musician myself, I fell in love with his playing, songwriting, melodies, etc. He really is an amazing guitar player and songwriter! Walt Grace is probably my favorite off of Born and Raised! The riff from Neon is still one of my top 5 favorite riffs of all time, which says a lot coming from a metal head like myself! See you guys in Orlando next month!

Does anybody else feel like they're about to pass out listening to this? I am, exactly the way Dean has described it in the intro. A very intense experience of my mind being blown for over an hour now (I'm at 1:16:15). It's so overly intellectually stimulating, makes me feel like i might end up throwing up / hungover the next day. I enjoy hearing John talk a lot, never miss a chance. But this one is up there, along with his interview at Oxford. I really wonder if anybody else has this sensory overload experience (and exactly as I do, keeps on listening, because it's just that good).
