Shit I've been here for about 9 years! Funny to look back and realize all the different "me" listening to this over that time. Some things never change.
his skills on the electric guitar are pretty well known but he's an absolute animal on the acoustic. the rhythm, funk and complexity of it all is incredible
winslow wong The groove he creates on the acoustic version of 'Something Like Olivia" is stupid. Not easy to get people to bob their heads with just an acoustic guitar.
How his vocals are overlooked! I'm a blues jazz singer and it cannot go unmentioned how adept his vocal skill is!! This cut makes me want to quit singing lol skat skatting is SICK
John Mayer's initial "phase" makes me feel very nostalgic, yet I started listening to him in 2015. What an amazing musician, surely one of my favorites of all time.
@@ArtesExatas idk man, paradise valley and born and raised are pretty amazing, this definitely is as well, has a different flavour but music for artists is a reflection of themselves, let's just say he's not this song anymore
How funny it sounds like he’s playing at bar or something by the conversations in the background. Before he was famous only a few people looked. What a strange interesting time that was captured here.
when you have made it this far to comment on this one particular song there is a reason your here your searching through one of the most talented singer/songwriters of all time, who can adapt/evolve into any genre of music (only ones that require talent ) his talents are one of a kind
I really dig this period of his music. The guitar work is complex and has a jazzy feel to it. Also he sounds confident and hopeful. His bluesy phase is great too (like that on Continuum). I wish he'd do another album in these styles. Cool picture by the way - the New Yorker building in the background captures some of NYC's art deco goodness.
KBblues, greens yeah these times, he had a lot to prove to people. Its funny because some of his pop songs are probably some of his most complex songs technically. He's just too talented
If he would just do stripped down versions of his music that would be awesome. For example when he released born and raised, it was ok but over produced and not something I can personally listen to. He releases those vevo videos of him doing the same songs on the acoustic and its unbelievable, like some of the greatest stuff ever imo. I have always wondered how he feels about it. Does that overproduced sound really help with sales? I was lucky enough to see him on the room for squares tour and when he toured with the trio following heavier things. Those shows were great! He is still the best songwriter who ever lived, please give the people what they want John lol.
John Mayer's catalogue is enormous including unreleaseds. He always has a rabbit up his sleeve to tickle our fancy. He's so master artist class. I love it. I love him
I heard this maybe 10 years ago, still love it like it was today. John makes some damn good music. Met him back stage in Charlotte, was super cool. Thank you John
Normal people write this song: "woahhh I can't believe just wrote this!! Get this recorded and sent out to all the labels right now!!!!" JM writes it: "Meh"
Felipe di Oliveira no it's not. I'm mad I just discovered this today. If someone said, ",swear on your life, you've heard ALL Mayer music", I'd say, "take my life, I have". I've been duped.
This is the thing that amazes me about him. Not only is he a GREAT songwriter, but his guitar playing is almost always filled with loads of interesting little things that elevate it to a completely different level. To me, this is muscianship of the highest caliber.
I saw you sleeping on the couch tonight You know it serves you right Makes you luckier than i All the colors in the room have changed Appear to disagree But brother ive discovered you We're pushin on We're passin through And it won't be long Till i walk with you But tonight im down But im inside out Staring at the pictures in the album you forgot about But isn't it a shame The times have changed But isnt it strange Lifelines stay the same The same We're never where we wanna be That's ok with me It's just the way it is it seems It feels like make believe But you're my history But brother i've rediscovered you and We're pushing on We're passing through And it won't be long Till i walk with you But tonight im down Im inside out Staring at the pictures in the album you forgot about But isnt it a shame The times have changed But isnt it strange Lifelines stay the same Round and round Can't believe my heart has waited this long All along We've been children in a cold world where Wonder was lost every day And if love was a compass Oh i have lost my way
I wish was there to grab the mic before the performance and say “Ladies and gentlemen, this guy will one day be the greatest singer-songwriter of his generation and this will be the only recording of this song, please be quiet so we can hear it clearly in 2021”
He was heavily influenced by Charlie Hunter who plays an 8 string guitar and plays rhythm guitar, bass guitar while playing the guitar solo all at the same time. The guy is amazing! You can definitely hear his influence in this song. Nice upload! Thanks.
This is just awesome, love his acoustic stuff, and his chords warm my soul. Some parts remind me of the kickass live version of neon, I wonder if this came first? JM is the man.
John Mayer = EPIC!!! He is my hero. Without him and his music I don't know where I would be in my life. He gets me through lifes tragedies and turmoil. Thank you love!!!!
Why he does´not released this in an album? These lyrics are great ! This is amazing!! He could released an great album full of songs he did not released yet.
Look up John Mayer's next potential album after The Search for Everything which may be called "Zero" which releases a few unreleased songs he performed live. This one seems popular that it could make an appearance on it :)
Because 'No Such Thing' also starts with a major7 chord played in the same shape. This one starts on an F as opposed to an E, only a half step apart. In less musical jargon- by removing this from his catalog, it makes/made 'No Such Thing' stand out more by not using elements present in other songs in the catalog. The slappy thumb lines are also reserved for the live versions of Neon.
Matt Orlando he also utilizes the Emaj7 in St Patrick's Day. There are many ways to play the chord around the fretboard. I think he just likes the chord. It could just be that he didn't like the song enough or didn't think it would sell. May not have anything to do with the similar sounds. Who Says and Stop This Train sound similar and he released both. Just a thought
the emaj7 is a great chord. i learned to love it from jm songs and now it always seems to creep into my own songwriting. esp the open version he uses in st patricks day.
Lifelines lyrics I saw you sleeping on the couch tonight You know it serves you right Makes you luckier than i All the colors in the room have changed Appear to disagree But brother ive discovered you We're pushin on We're passin through And it won't be long Till i walk with you But tonight im down But im inside out Staring at the pictures in the album you forgot about But isn't it a shame The times have changed But isnt it strange Lifelines stay the same The same We're never where we wanna be That's ok with me It's just the way it is it seems It feels like make believe But you're my history But brother i've rediscovered you and We're pushing on We're passing through And it won't be long Till i walk with you But tonight im down Im inside out Staring at the pictures in the album you forgot about But isnt it a shame The times have changed But isnt it strange Lifelines stay the same Round and round Can't believe my heart has waited this long All along We've been children in a cold world where Wonder was lost every day And if love was a compass Oh i have lost my way

God I remember the entire crowd singing the whole song with him, word for word, at nick's fat city in pittsburgh, 2001. An entire crowd knew the words to a song that was never recorded. The song writing displayed here and at Eddie's Attic makes anything he put out after Room for Squares sound like a different artist... a much worse songwriter. I like this John Mayer. I hope that he, in time will come around like he said he'd always do.
fully agree... John front-loaded his best work to establish himself as a star (and who can blame any artist for doing that?). The 2003 follow-up album was strong, but ever since then, John has only done a great song here and there amid the gobs of stunningly bland stuff that he apparently records to satisfy his fat contract... i just hope the dude is happy, because he's earned the right to it.
He actually states in an interview that "if you wanna make it you better be damn sure play your best music on your demo and debut album and if you don't you may never make it." A very smart strategy, almost seems comical not to, haha!
Well in a sense he has continually toned down his own personality in his lyrics to make them more accessible and ultimately sell-able. The lyrics on this song are extremely personal and it's unlikely that the listener would see themselves in the lyrics the first time round the song plays. What works for room for squares is that the lyrics are simple enough (even if they're well woven) that the listener can connect with them and have the illusion that John is literally speaking to them. And over the years he has toned his lyrical "quirks" even more... to the point that songs like "new light" and "carry me away" are literally mirroring the lyrical elementary-ness of other contemporary pop acts. He is tryna fit in, but it just hides how good a songwriter he is (or atleast was at some point)
because that is what makes them GEMS for the die hard fans. :) like a special little gift, a best kept secret, but i know what you mean. it'd be nice to have a clear version of this song to turn up good and loud on the stereo.
Man I have nothing against Mayer' new music but I prefer this side of him, it's rawer in my opinion. Personally I love his acoustic stuff and his Trio work.
And to be easier to find them all. Die hard or not, he has a huge amount of unreleased songs, and it's just easier if they're all collected. I've found a few on reddit, but still...
