John McLaughlin: The Mediterranean Concerto (1990)

Recorded in 1988 but not released until 1990, The Mediterranean was composed by John McLaughlin and orchestrated by Michael Gibbs. Michael Tilson Thomas conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, as he had for McLaughlin's Apocalypse fourteen years earlier.
As expected, the orchestra sounds, well, orchestral. But, there is something thrilling about hearing McLaughlin's unusual melodies emanating from such a traditional source. The Concerto sounds nothing like Apocalypse and nothing like jazz, although McLaughlin does improvise in certain sections. It is, however, yet another validation of McLaughlin's versatility as a musician and a composer-arranger. The orchestra drowns out his acoustic guitar at times, but his presence is still palpable.
I had the pleasure of seeing the 1986 world premiere of the Concerto, featuring McLaughlin and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece was very well received by the crowd and by local classical music critics. (Miles Davis was also in the audience.) The Concerto featured many of McLaughlin's trademark riffs expanded into coherent streams and themes. His playing was, as always, evocative and energizing.
Five pieces for guitar and piano also appear on the album, and that's where the jazz happens. Katia LaBeque, a gifted classical musician who was also McLaughlin's love at the time, joins in. The tunes are jazz thematic in nature and are quite dynamic. The most pleasing piece is "Zakir" which McLaughlin has presented in several different contexts over the years. All in all, the album is yet another impressive example of John McLaughlin's ability to occupy many musical worlds.

I sat in the front row when this premiered with the LA Philharmonic. A truly memorable event! I would put him in the top 10 worldwide.

The most amazing thing with JM is the playing is so intense and the man doesn't have 'guitar face'. :)

i wish john mclaughlin had done more of this type of orchestral musical creation than what is available commercially... though all of his musical folio is wondrous to my layman's ears

Muy bueno. Es atractivo ver a John con orquesta. Su estilo es la improvisación continua, pero hecha con un extraordinario talento, mucha creatividad, una velocidad endiablada y gran emotividad de este genial guitarrista.

Really, really like this piece. If anyone here has actually been on the Mediterranean (The Center of the Earth), you can better appreciate how much this incredible work of art captures that region.

There is no one better. I wish I could figure out just some of the chords that he uses so effortlessly. He makes it look so easy. Rolling Stone and their critic Musicians must not have heard Mclaughlin. They are biased. He is better than Hendrix of whom I have been an avid fan and have been since 1967. Hendeix studio work made him famous with overdubbing.

Too bad the quality is so poor. I've always been interested in symphony composition by McLaughlin. They are simply amazing - from the Apocalypse album days.

Even though John Mclaughlin is a wonderful guitar player this concerto doesn’t really work all that well.. The relationship between the orchestra and the solo instrument is not very exploratory or inventive. It has a nice sound, but one would expect more in a classically inspired composition.

I totally agree, the guitar vanishes out and lacks the power of the solo instrument. I like JML though, but this really doesn't work.
