I've literally just been scrolling the comments to see if anyone els noticed it aswel! So glad it wasn't just me that was confused! 😂😂 great video tho... wouldn't mind trying that in my 320d e90. 👍
Respect for even contemplating it. This is one of your BEST videos. Thank you for sharing your memories. Its a testament to the quality of the car and also to your meticulous maintenance of it.
@@GeorgeAusters I'm going to send a link to your video to Mannol UK. Given you are using their products to achieve this goal, your journey is a great example of real life results.
Have done plenty of distance driving over the years and my limit has always been about 500 miles in a day… just starting watching but kudos for trying the whole trip in a single hit mate!
I've got an F10 520D it's fuel economy is remarkable. I've managed over 800 miles on one tank of fuel, with plenty to spare. I haven't tried to do what you've done, but from John O'Groats I think it would do it, since it's Higher ground to lower ground.
Good job! I was at home thinking about doing something like this and thought I’d look to see if anyone had done it on one tank - can’t believe how well the car did! I’ll be doing it the opposite way - deserves a sub! 👍🏻
Just watched from start to finish, it shows how good of a car the E60 is. The editing on this video, sounds etc were spot on throughout, very watchable
How about a "Four Points of the compass" UK challenge? I did it in 1989 two-up on an 11yr old Honda Superdream 400. It took us 4 days. Start at Dunnet Head, then to Great Yarmouth, then Lands End and finally St Davids (not strictly the most westerly point) but its nice to get all 3 mainland countries in.
Great vid George ..... my E60 msport m47 takes me up and down from central Scotland to Coventry (700 mile round trip) on a full tank on a fairly regular basis. In fact you would have passed my house on the A9 (Auchterarder) on your journey. Great cars to eat up the miles and in comfort 👍
This is on my list of road trips, well done pal, garaged my n47 with plan to sell but recently mot’ed and drove for the week and may be a keeper as such a pleasure to drive
That is an excellent idea, to stop for a whole hour between Carlisle and Manchester. I would recommend Killington Lake services simply because of the views there, but obviously you stop where you want. But it's definitely important to get out and stretch your legs, get a bit of fresh air into your lungs before committing to the next part of your long journey.
Great video George, it looked like a really pleasant trip! One observation on the technical side of things - your mic would play only on left or right at times. Other than that 👌🏼 really digged the satnav touch
Thanks for watching Helder. It was actually my first ever time using this microphone setup and think once the battery gets low it starts to cut out. Thanks for letting me know though!
Well done man! You should deffo do some more driving videos! Youndont need to go top gear crazy! But there are some amazing drives out there. I can give you 2 or 3 beautiful routes in southwards that are both unknown. And underrated!!! You just, wouldn't expect them to be there 😉😉 can't wait to see more anyways!
@@GeorgeAusters I would like to see more of the landscape. I think you could speak in the background, and may be you then have to make a 45 min copy also. Then I think you should avoid filming with a very wide angled camera. When then have a good working equipment, then I can tell you where to go... 😁 By the way, who have cut all the forests down in Scotland? 🙄
Wow.. best video in a few weeks.. you nailed it george...did you have a wee bit of desil in a jerry can....and feck me you look so so tall next to the beast e 60..lol.. well done mate. K 👌
It’s a long arse way.. I did Stevenage to Loch Ness a few years back…in an MG ZS180.. Never again in a little hatch.. it felt like the journey would never end! 😣 A BMW is definitely the way to do it 👍🏼
my E60 07 520d M Sport is a BEAST on fuel! I can't believe how economical it is and i am over the moon i bought it after owning an 2014 Insignia Elite Nav bi turbo, it may not have all the bells and whistles of the Siggy, but it is a 10000x better car!
epic journey. is this the n47 engine? its mad because my wife has the same color e60 lci, same spyders, same spoiler, probably even the same grill lol but with the m57 engine & automatic. I love how comfortable it is for long journeys, like a living room. I have the n47 engine in my e92 manual
George great idea for a video. Two questions. Have you updated the maps on the ccc nav, and two what headlight bulbs are running as they don’t look stock 👍
Lizard point is most southerly part of United Kingdom. Lands End I most south Western point of mainland UK. Love yer video's buddy, lots of people make this wrong assumption. Up at John'o'groats you also need to travel a further 2.35 miles further North to Dunnet head for the most northerly point of the UK. Boss video buddy. 🤔🤔😊😊👍👍👍
The longest trip in about 23 hours I have made was circa 1630 km, a little more than 1000 miles. By motorcycle (BMW K 1200 RS -97). Comfortable to drive in 130 kph for about 10 hours with stops for fuelling every 400 km. The longest journey, 2012, with my BMW L 1600 GT -11 was 14500 km in 24 days... To the Bajkal lake in eastern Siberia and back. Nice to make some plans and be able to fulfill them.
Legend! Cheers Neil, much appreciated. I thought it would be a good way to show the work that’s been done to it upto this point, and it’s very close to completion!
Hi George - chuffed to see you made it! Well done. Out of interest (not sure if anybody has asked) how many litres of diesel did the tank hold - so basically allows us to do cost per mile analysis. Great video - really enjoyed it - see you soon.
Awesome video. BMW knew how to build cars back in 2008, and good to see yours is still going strong. Did you drive in 5th or in 6th on the motorway? Modern cars are not capable of such distances, adverts now boast of ranges of less than 300 miles, so much for progress. To think you can now buy a 15 year old 5 series for less than five grand - it's a no brainer really.
Enjoyed this although sniggered about how you enter and exit the car...must be a tall bloke 😂 The future isn't electric just yet and that camera waiting for your arrival was handy 😉
Excellent George, well done. I’ve got no hope of doing that on one tank in my F11 530d😂 You’ve also highlighted that I must update my Satnav. Keep ‘em coming, great content as always.😁👍
@@Birmingham_racing No accurate idea, I got it for smiles and carrying my 5 dogs, not economy. However I live in Wales so the roads are hilly, twisty and with a lot of town work I’m averaging 35mpg. As a guess on a run I think it’ll average high 40’s, but being a life long sports and dirt bike rider, I’m often driving on open roads and motorways at 20mph + over the legal limit. Just enough to scrub off speed and not enough to get a ban. It works for me, I’ve had a clean licence for over 30 yrs🤞😁
@@GeorgeAusters I think I’d rather pit for fuel and avoid dying of boredom😉 Hope in the future you do a review on different BM suspension, as in M sport compared to SE spec, active and dynamic package as mine has. I find the reactive roll bars that limits body roll brilliant. All the best 😁👍
I've got a stage mk3.5 st diesel Stage 2 240hp and 531nm driven from John ogroats to Lands end 847 miles ended up over 1000 miles on 70 litres of diesel, 71 to 73 mpg
Quite right to err on the side of caution, because life happens - you simply don't know what you are going to encounter on the road down to the Far South West corner of the UK.🥴😉 Keeping to the speed limits, good man: a good example for any younger viewers.🤝👍
Awesome awesome video! Very tempting to give this a shot in my 535 F10 and see what I can do. I have managed a 718 mile round trip to Snowden and back from Essex with 1/8th left, could have driven a tad more economically I'm sure! Great stuff👊🏼
George, I know you have shed loads of videos of the maintenance on your E60, but have you performed preventative maintenance such as the timing chain etc.? This engine honestly is great despite the horror stories of the timing chains in them. I reckon with the right preventative maintenance these are up there with the 3 litre engines.
@@GeorgeAusters I would be surprised if anything happens to this car in the next 50,000 miles provided oil changes will be made, and even without them, but then you have to top up after 15,000 miles, and later quite a lot!
I did just under 1000 miles in a day in my E61 535d last summer from SW France to Northern Germany…3 separate times! Not on one tank but…Horrible! 20 hours each time which worked out to an average of 50 mph. Never want to do it again….🤣 (Averaged 38 mpg each time)
Hi George, loving your vids keep up the great work I've learnt loads from you and carried out few jobs on my car, however I need some help on back pressure figures and exhaust temps, anyway I can email you with my figures see what you think , cheers Andy.
What size of tank is this? Sorry if you mentioned it I got lost in the video. I have a 2014 f10 with the n47t and on a journey from Glasgow to Carlisle I'll avg just over 60 mpg. 70 litre tank in the f10.
First of all, congrats on your new car. As a BMW e46 320d owner, this is my dream car right now. So what differences caught your attention? What caught your attention the most?
what was your average fuel economy? did you drive how you normally would or was it a case of trying to really make the most out of your fuel? i have a really high spec m57 e92 it'd be really interesting to see what difference the engine capacity would make to the journey!
