John Peel OBE was an English disc jockey and radio presenter. John Peel was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004.
John Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. He is widely acknowledged for promoting artists of multiple genres, including pop, dub reggae, punk rock and post-punk, electronic music and dance music, indie rock, extreme metal and British hip hop. Fellow DJ Paul Gambaccini described Peel as "the most important man in music for about a dozen years".

The 'Dragon' at the top of the headstone is the badge of Liverpool Football club,John was a big fan,the inscription at the bottom of the headstone is from John's favourite song, Teenage Kicks by The Undertones.

It's a Bird not a dragon. 🙂 The Liver bird is the symbol of Liverpool & Liverpool FC and located on the top of the Liver buildings. The Liver Bird has been a symbol of the city for over 800 years. RIP John.

@@cemu1065 “Got a little annoyed when he said it was a dragon”! Is that all you have to say about the video?🤨 A Phoenix is a mythical bird from Greek mythology, often associated with fire hence maybe why some would think of it as a dragon.

It was a well researched video…lots of info we didn’t know…Thankyou for doing all of that….but shame on you for thinking the Liver bird was a flipping dragon! Lol ( I used to work for the Royal Liver, and still find fascination looking up at the four birds perched at each corner of the building) but you brought the tears back to my eyes…I didn’t think John had been gone so long! He was an amazing human being, kind, caring and a genuine chap. As well as a talented DJ. I hadn’t even given a thought to his breaking the mould by playing new unheard of punk etc, rather than the “comfortable “ familiar music we expected to hear, but introduced us to the Undertones ( and what an incredible gesture Flying over to Ireland to meet them at his own expense, then featuring their music! I can just imagine the shock he got and how very touched he must have felt when the band turned up at his door to present him with their personal gift and tribute. As I say, a truly genuine bloke. That choked me up again too as I mentally pictured the scene. He introduced us to Pink Floyd who I love, and doubt any other DJ at the time ( bar Pirate ships) would have had such courage…but aren’t we glad he did? He may have said he came last at school, but he was a leading light in his job. Just wish someone had put fresh flowers or a plant on his grave. You will NEVER,EVER be forgotten John…your passing at such a young age was tragic, and my heart goes out to his family and close friends. My one selfish regret is never having got to meet him personally! But I’m a big believer in the after life…there has to be more than just three score years and ten, and John was robbed of at least ten years! So I truly believe in heaven he is back enjoying himself Dj ing, and finally getting to meet all his music heroes..Hendrix,Elvis, and so many many more as well as being back with his parents,….believe it….there is no death..just the next chapter of another big adventure, so maybe THEN I may have the pleasure of meeting this wonderful man at last. Godbless you John…bet your still watching Liverpool play from where you are! Once a Liverpool supporter ALWAYS one! Thanks Beep Beep ( don’t know your name! Sorry! ) this was a beautiful churchyard for John, and if I’m that way, I will be sure to bring you some Red flowers for a Liverpool supporter, unless they change them yet again..used to be blue! Now I read their THIRD kit ( why?) is “dark atomic teal and Rio Teal” whatever those colours are. I think you would have stepped up and said something about the revolving door of kit change..poor kids try to keep up and support, bad enough high ticket costs without pestering hard up parents having to keep buying new kit to support as well….it’s not fair John in these football loving kids, of which you were always one…so if you have any sway from where you are, please have a word…they would have listened I’m sure. Rest easy…see you in the future. Love and light. Helen 🙋‍♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕🦋🦋💐🥰 🎄🎅🙏🙏🙏xxx

From John's later TV voice over work, one name sticks in my mind in John's unique voice - Mr Trebus. John voiced a series about hoarders and the story forever returned to Mr Trebus who could throw nothing away, little old guy who was Eastern European and living in London. So many of my formative years were spent listening to John Peel on a Sunday Night and also Annie Nightingale. 1st heard most of the bands I enjoy to this day in a set they did for the show. The Ruts, Tubeway Army, Joy Division and many, many more. I read his autobiographical book Margrave of the Marshes which was fascinating. John was treated rather badly by Marc Bolan who John championed all the way to the top only for Bolan to turn his back on John. Such a great man gone far too soon.

John was a fan of the Faces, playing their tracks and giving them exposure which helped the band immensely. Pretending to play mandolin with the Faces on TOTP which upset some cranks at the BBC which we all like to see. His radio show was pretty unique and he regularly plugged new bands however obscure, some I’m sure never heard of again, but that was Peely he didn’t care and that was one of his qualities.

John Peel and his family were regular visitors to Ipswich and there were no airs or graces/ "Do you know who I am?" from him at all. Hello Jean briefly set up. Make it too boring. I was going to do a channel about old programs and where The actors are now etc. And it and introduce it with clips. But I went to see Sylvia Plath grave with my friend Richard and we filmed it just for fun and I certainly thought I'd prefer this. It's a one person focus and it allows us all to reminisce and pay respects and for me it allows me to travel to the location which is more interesting. So that's it really. I didn't think I'd like it so much in the beginning, but it grew more after the first month and then I love doing it. That out of the channels doing this of course I'm not particularly looked at them only after. I don't think you should try and emulate someone else, It's best just to do what you feel happy with and if other people like it great. If not..... not sure really ahah Thank you for the interest. I'll watch out for you. Alan

I once met the CEO of some Texan radio stations who hired John Peel in the early 60’s, this guy Kenneth Dowe, had answered the phone ☎️ in the newsroom to Jack Ruby one day, he was enquiring as to the time Lee Harvey Oswald would be moved, fast forward an hour or so and Ruby had shot Oswald Peel can be seen in the footage of the 23rd November midnight press conference at the Dallas Police Department when Oswald was paraded before the media, he had passed himself off as a journalist for the Liverpool Echo

John Peel is certainly an institution in the world of specialist British music, unlike other radio presenters he swerved the major label pop playlists & championed the unsigned underdogs & indie bands. He loved the music, not himself. A very eclectic taste. He was probably the first national dj to play Reggae / Dub & Hip Hop at Radio 1, back when commercial radio stations would not play black music. Although he did have a policy of boycotting homophobic ragga / dancehall artists like Buju Banton. I use to listen to his show on & off, in fact i recall listening to his last show on Radio 1 before he set off to Peru.

Great man was John Peel. I remember him presenting top of the pops with Janice Long in the 1980s. They were good friends and had a great working relationship with one as witty as the other. The Undertones come from my part of the world and are still performing to this very day, minus Fergal Sharkey. John Peel gave them their big break and like you said on the video the band never forgot John for it. He was a gentleman and he knew his music. He is still sadly missed and will long be remembered. Thanks for sharing another good video story of a true great.

I do vaguely remember John Peel, but have to admit to not really knowing much about him. He seems like a genuinely nice, caring person, who despite being in the public eye, didn't have a big hit for himself, which is really refreshing. The story about the Undertones was really nice. His headstone is a bit unexpected, I have to admit. May he rest in eternal peace. Thank you for sharing this story 😊

Hello Karin John was a bit Marmite you had a loved him or not. He did play a lot of weird music but that was his usp but not done for the fact it was just him. He did what he wanted and hopefully enough people enjoyed it and they did. Thank you, Alan

His house which he called Peel Acres is only 1-2 minutes drive away from where he is buried. I’ve seen his house, which is painted pink and is virtually in the middle of nowhere. It’s located on a rural road, which can only fit probably 1 car. In the front, there is a massive field, where he has kept chickens, not to eat, but to have eggs. In the garden, he has a tennis court on the right hand side. It is quite a spacious place and the property is probably worth over a million pounds. His wife, which he lovingly called the Pig, because of the noise she made when laughing, still lives there. She is 74 years old and she recently sold some of Peel’s memorabilia which fetched I think nearly half a million pounds on auction. So not bad and she doesn’t have to worry about any heating bills in the not so distant future.

@@dee74raz 'Peel Acres' is the nickname that John gave the house, it's not it's official name . . . part of the building had to be reinforced with steel girders to support the weight of his record collection (which is worth more than the house!) 😀

Another lovely video Alan. Such an nice man who promoted one of our greatest pleasures in life….music. The headstone at his borderless grave is, like the man, unassuming. As with many other DJ’s from the 60’s & 70’s, they were part of our childhood (and beyond). How dull life would be without music! RIP John.

I remember back in the late seventies when I was 15 I used to stay up to listen to his radio 1 show, This guy got me into music especially the Undertones and a band called the members. Usually the next day at school the talk before assembly was always about his show the night before. In a way what I learnt from him was it don’t matter what you listen to as music is music. This guy helped me to kick start my record collection and is a personal hero of mine . The radio 1 shows literally became part of my life that extended into my social life as we used to buy the records he played then play them usually around a friends house on a Friday night. I admired him greatly as he played so many great records and always came across like I was listening to a friend no just a DJ. Still miss him to this day as he literally had an Impact on who I am today. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this one he was one of my heroes! he was djing in my home city of Nottingham back in the 90s and I couldn't make it although my cousin went, anyway I got a phone call from my cousin that night and he said there's someone who wants to talk to you! the next voice I heard was who at first I thought was my cousin imitating John Peels voice! but as he carried on It dawned on me that it was the great man himself!!! my coisin had told him I was a big fan and passed his mobile phone to John!!! John asked me what the best record shops in Nottingham were and about music in general. What a true gentleman and sadly missed.
