John Peels Record Box {Full show}

A wooden box containing 142 singles was discovered among Peel's belongings after the DJ's death and subsequently became the subject of a Channel 4 documentary. This used the collection as a starting point to explore Peel's life and musical tastes, with comments from family, friends, musicians and colleagues.
Although the records are portrayed as Peel's favourites and the box as being the last thing he would grab if his home were burning down, the selection doesn't include anything from favourite band the Fall, who had their own dedicated space in his record collection, long-time known favourite 45s like Peter Gunn by Duane Eddy, or anything from personal musical heroes such as Roy Orbison (who, however, did write the Jerry Byrd single found in the box).

I was fortunate to have met John about 6 months before he died at a private record fair in Foxton, Cambridge. As I was flicking the racks and semi-arguing with a mate about the up coming record fair in Utrecht he interjected with a comment telling us to shut up arguing , it was only at this point we realised who was flicking the racks with us. With this common bond of record collecting between the 3 of us conversation flowed easy between us all , then my mate suggested a coffee break and all 3 of us sat down at a small table to enjoy the break and examine what each of us had found in the racks ( John had picked up a small batch of entirely 78 rpms) and I enquired to why he had picked them up when he of all people had records thrust his way free all day , every week. We talked about his Dandelion label , “a disaster” he ventured and I also asked him what he intended to do with his collection when he died (little did we know how close that time was) and I remember him joking that he didn’t know , but he knew that Sheila (his wife) wouldn’t have a clue about the values or historical context of his collection. One of the best hours of my life and it was made comfortable because of our common hobby.

The Vinyl Guru ...yeah it was a very interesting and unexpected day , like I explained earlier there was no awkward “what should I say to him next?” lulls in the conversation as the 3 of us just kept our to-be-purchased records passing back and forth to each other for critical judgement by the others . He was asking as many questions to us as we were asking of him , a very natural and flowing conversation between us all. A true day to remember.

Simply irreplaceable. Who didn't love John Peel? I took to him instantly as a 10 year old in '78 when my older brother used to put his little battery operated radio on each night as the 4 of us who shared a room used to lie in awe at some of the music but laughed at some of it as well, but we all thought he was just an incredible man and that's a feeling that has never left me to this day. RIP John.

For me John Peel was the only DJ that had real kudos. Listening to his show in the evening (late 70s to early 80s) and recording it on cassette tapes felt like being part of a unique and exciting world. Giving us an awareness of not being alone in our quest for authentic music. Something that ment so much to us as young listeners. We felt at that time alienated in so many other ways from society as a whole. It's no exaggeration to say that he was a true life line. Someone that you identified with closely and regarded as a friend. There was simply no one else that came close to him. He enriched our lives by the music he discovered and played for us. Thank you for this interesting programme of a wonderful man.

beautiful show...great concept.. evry young musician needs to learn from the past... not the present. look back, without anger... just learn.. and be open to the things that move you - without knowing why they make you feel that.. thing. Instinct refined becomes taste... which eventually can elevate us all and make the world calmer and happier if you let it.

One of the very few 'DJ's' [along with Alexis Korner] that I had any time for on Radio 1. Most were a bunch of self-absorbed pricks who wouldn't recognise a decent record if it fell out of the sky and landed on their heads!] But the thing I loved and admired most about Peel - and 'real' DJ's will understand this - was that it was NEVER about him. It was ALWAYS about the music. And that is why he was never truly appreciated and valued. RIP 'Mr Frog'.

The Misunderstood, even nowadays such a widely unknown gem! One of the finest 60's Psych/Garage bands ever, not for nothing did Peel bring them back to England to manage them. Unfortunately, some of the band members were drafted into the Vietnam War - that being the end of the Misunderstood. In case you don't know them, here's a great compilation of their recordings on the lp Before The Dream Faded: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3x4Wdj_q6xw.html

It's funny how they completely condemned Marc Bolan for "abandoning old friend" but at the same time desperately tried to offer excuses for David Bowie when he did exactly the same thing ("it was just a misunderstanding on John Peel's part").

It's a wonderful quirk of history that John should have had a single from the 1950's by "The Gov'nor" in his box, and that Ken played at the 100 Club the same week as it's infamous Punk Festival.

There is something fake here. Before JP died he said there was only one group that he kept two titles in that box: Medicine Head, on Dandelion records which he co-started. Twenty by WS??!! FAKE. BTW his widow sold the rights of John and Clive Selwood's Dandelion label recording artistes to conglomerates without permission, so that the owners got next to nothing from their songs and even lost the rights to their own work!! Criminal. And their records are not even mentioned: is it because the famous talkers are so ignorant, which is a BBC ethos of course. Goodnight and good riddance indeed.
