This is what I was told good music was all about. Words are only as good as those who sing them. These two now get to sing up there. Can y'all hear them. Listen.
In April 1984, I was working as a concierge at the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City. I answered a call from a guest's room, and the man on the other end asked where he could get a bottle of whiskey. I told him that was a bit complicated in Salt Lake City, but I offered to get one for him. I walked a few blocks to the state liquor store and delivered the bottle to his room. When the door opened, I realized it was John Prine. I said, "you're John Prine." He said, "that's right." Told him I was a big fan. He said, "do you want to come to the show tonight?" He was playing at Kingsbury Hall on the campus of the U of Utah. I said, "are you kidding." What a show. What a songwriter. What a body of music he created. Thank you, John, for the many memories -- and for a great show in April 1984.
That is too cool! You are lucky. But then again, you were willing to go the extra mile for a patron and he recognized the value of and appreciated your good service and rewarded it. So I guess it really wasn’t so much about luck as it was the character of the people involved in the encounter.
I saw his buddy, Steve Goodman, in Anchorage Alaska for BOTH SHOWS...in April 1984. Miss them both no doubt they are still writing songs for the Angels now, how lucky they are.
This is the first time I found Nanci. (WITH JOHN PRINE) I fell in love at first sight, but she was already gone, John followed just two years ago. I sure enjoy seeing Nanci on youtube but only wish I had found her sooner, I would have driven all the way to TEXAS just to see her perform. SHE STILL MOVES ME.
Just turned 76 in March. I can get pretty discouraged about the state of the world these days. Then this.....I have been so fortunate to have lived in the times that I have. The two angels added so much beauty to my life.
I'm 31 years old, I know John was making beautiful music long before I was born, but I used to sit on the end of my dad's bed and listen to him play John's songs. I was raised on Prine, and his death hit me way harder than I ever expected. Rest In Paradise John, maybe you and my dad are picking songs now.
“these days your face, in my memory…is in the frozen hands of grace against these times…” I don’t think I really understood those words until she became a beautiful memory
@@mygoddess1 I’m with you Donna! Nanci’s and John’s passing were particularly hard and sudden. They both fought against so many illness for years and kept coming back. She was a heroine to so many. It is so hard to believe she is gone. It is sad to lose our heroes- you are sooo right!
If you listen to Nanci's entire song book, you may fins=d that she is equal to any singer-songwriter out there. Especially her older stuff. Like when she was playing in Boston. If you can ever find it, her song "Michael's Song" is a real classic. About how hard and lonely the life of a singer-songwriter is.
Can't believe they are both gone now. So sad. May you both be reunited now and sing together in Heaven. Rest in peace John and Nanci. Thank you both for all your beautiful music. May you both enjoy your Heaven rewards for sharing the gifts God gave you both.x
Everybody got only one walk; in this life. That's my feeling. Givvit your best shot, people ! Be kind,, be generous, when you have the loot. Hopefully it will come back to you double, in the End.
I was introduced to his amazing voice very recently and my late husband and I got married to In Spite of Ourselves in June last year. I love his songs and so did my husband.
I had the distinct pleasure of woking with Nancy on her LP; Live from the Anderson Cohnty Fair. She was a kind, friendly, caring, and gracious soul! RIP, Nancy!
@@Mom_sBasement Why don't you just ignore it if you don't like the reference, remember that JP was a deeply spiritual man, religious, generous , content. you on the other hand seem like an oul grouch, but don't worry , God is forgiving and welcoming ... even to grouch's , so come on out of that basement and embrace the diversity.
God yes. Can't tell you how many times I've watched this just to melt with that smile... and to hear one of the greatest duets of all time, wish they did an entire album!
You know that feeling when someone dies...someone you've never met but you feel like you have. Someone who's always just been there waiting for you to catch up...someone who's influenced you and inspired you and done more for you than you could have ever imagined...that was John Prine. I feel like I'm drowning...
John Emmons I’m a hurtn’ too. Agreed ... drowning in tears ... not for us his fans but for all words he never got to share with others & his family. A wise soul with a guitar a heart in heaven. Miss you man.
This performance completely changed my life! I must have played this video over 10000 times and I've never cut it off early! His voice is uplifting and haunting at the same time! RIP John Prine 😪
John left us today. He also left us all those beautiful songs that we tearfully played and sang tonight. His good soul lives on in his music. Thanks, John
John loved doing duets with female singers and this is a prime example. Every time I hear another John Prine song it becomes my latest current favourite. Nanci is perfect in this setting and has recording a couple of terrific duet albums in her own right. Miss you, John.
This is the essence of what music is about. Two great singers both enjoying it.No orchestra but what a song and the way it is put across!I I doubt if it will be equalled. A Classic.
Very few songs are sung with such heart and sincerity and personal experience, and this one reaches me deep inside like no others. Two more souls departed into the eternal light. How I love both John and Nancy.
John was a fantastic song writer. Nancy is an amazing singer. She makes this song pop. My wife wants to know when I will get over my crush on Ms Griffith. I told her some day. She laughed.
I’m very sad about Nanci, and this duet Is so sad, but also heartwarming in that they were able to share their talents and their great public personalities with us, and may they both sing forever.
I used to get drunk n cry to this song . 40 years listening to John . 15 years sober . Foster parent to 4. Grandkids. Laughed n cried to Prines lyrics n rhythms. Still can. Thanks John could tell what a nice guy you were too...
I had never heard of this cute baby faced singer till just recently , because of the Corona virus , can't believe that i have missed out on this talent since forever , I'm 70 years old . Thanks to RU-vid , hopefully i can catch up , cheers every one , keep safe xxxxx
Three of the biggest love affairs I've had in my life, Nancy, John, and this song. Never seen a more beautiful women, a wiser man, or a song that portrayed my life closer. RIP my beloved friends.
John was a very special kind of human being who went through a lot of suffering and wrote about it on the other side. We are all better for him having been in our lives. We love and miss you John Prine.😢🙃
First, John left us, now Nanci...just devastated!! They were both so talented, beautiful, soulful, lovely people..they will be forever missed. Now they will sing for the angels in heaven...bless their souls!!
The world is still turning, but John and Nanci made it great while they were here !… I miss them greatly but their music keeps them in my head. RIP to them and bless their families.
John Prine. This artist touched my soul. I loved him like I knew him and he knew me. Neither was true. It hardly matters. John Prine the most human human.
John was an incredible song writer and his performances were intimate! If you don’t know Nanci Griffith, she too was a brilliant song writer and had a beautiful voice. She was less known than John but wort getting to know throughput RU-vid and other online music venues! I will add another genius singer-song writer, who deserves more recognition, but on occasion crossed paths with both Nanci and John and that is Guy Clark!
This song first drew me to this extraordinarily gifted song writer. By an d by i got listen to him , i kept on discovering this awesome human being whose songs always dripped with sparkling fun words , words that talked about basic goodness and kindness we seem to be doing without while going through our lives . Words that could talk about the loners , the old ones , the broken ones for each and very condemned human being. RIP John. Ther'll never be another like you.
...two of my faves-----sad--she was such a cutie, and good 'ole Handsome Johnny. Glad we've got these few songs of them together--sure wish they'd done their full album together.
