Now in its 45th Season, the program is taped live before a concert audience from The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. Austin City Limits is the longest-running music series in television history and remains the only TV series to ever be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Since its inception, the groundbreaking music series has become an institution that’s helped secure Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World. The historic KLRU Studio 6A, home to 36 years of ACL concerts, has been designated an official Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Landmark. In 2011, ACL moved to the new venue ACL Live at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. ACL received a rare institutional Peabody Award for excellence and outstanding achievement in 2012.
Austin City Limits is produced by Austin PBS, KLRU-TV and funding is provided in part by Dell, American Airlines, the Austin Convention Center Department and Cirrus Logic. Additional funding is provided by the Friends of Austin City Limits. Learn more about Austin City Limits, programming and history at acltv.com.

Only John Prine can tell a story with penache, and write a song that so many can relate too. Not that it matters, I'm a born-again Christian who finds nothing irreverent in poking fun at the obvious hypocrisies in society and perceptions of what God is or might be. A priceless common sense, truth and honesty about life and a gifted songwriter and musician! A true American troubadour...23 Skidoo! There's no doubt in my mind he's in heaven entertaining Jesus, the angels and all the saints that have gone before him.

Met John. Age 15. Set up a sound system for him in San Jose. After the show he ... encouraged me to become a singer/ songwriter. 40 years later ... while attending a concert a a Seattle Winery ... he walked off stage and serenaded me and my wife with my favorite sone "Angel From Montgomery". I cried. My wife cried. The first 3 rows cried. Even John got a bit misty. The best of times. Thanx, John. 🤠

@@mortalclown3812 Hey. You bet. My pleasure. The man was an integral part of my life as a musician. The night he sang fore me and my wife was ... magical. Right before he started his second set ... he walked out, alone, under a blue spotlight (you could of heard a pin drop) and he played 3 chords on his guitar, and like an over zealous freak of a fan I stood up in front of 3000 people and ... exploded ... shout whoooo!! and clapping my hands. John just smiled and yelled, " I take it you like that song?" so I yelled back " it's my very favorite" so he yells back, " why don't you sit back down with your lady friend, there, and I'll come over there and sing it for you" and .. he did. I gotta say. Wow. (Cause it's my favorite song in the world). It was indeed a dream come true. (also ran into Annie DeFranco in the crowd earlier and she walked up and flirted with me and playfully teased my wife) So. Yeah. Saw your comment and thought I'd go ahead and .. color the picture a bit for you. Hey, God Bless you, and much love. Thanx, again, friend. 🤠

@@Rufusismydogsname Hey. You bet. Glad to be of service. Here's another. Age 15 I set up a PA for him. After the show I walked by and John was sitting on a bench, sweatdrenched and just a little bit .. drunk. He said " Hey kid, come here." So I did. He grabbed my hand and said " So. Kid. You play guitar?" So. I said. Yes. I do. With that he looked up at me and smiled and said "Good. Words of wisdom ... it's not drummers that get all the chicks, it's us guitar players that do". With that said, he leaned back on against the wall ... and passed out cold. Out. Had to be ... helped up and out. Unforgettable experience. Typical John, back in the day. Ok then. That's a story I rarely tell. Again. Thanks for your message. Again. Happy ur happy. Much love, and God Bless you. 🤠

John Prine could write tragic songs like Sam Stone, empathy songs like Hello in There. But he was also the funniest songwriter of all time. I once saw him in concert in Taos, NM in what was like a large cafeteria . The audience sat at tables. Before every song he told some funny story. I have never laughed so hard at a concert in my life, before or after. He had such a creative way of putting words together and fitting them to the tune. A one of a kind songwriting genius. Sure do miss him but we have his songs to listen to as a great legacy.

The sooner we realize we're all living in the same dark end of a John Prine song the sooner we'll quit trying to climb on top of one another. Which was actually a big part of what Jesus had to say. At least after his Missing Years.

I worked in the suburbs of the SW of Chicago and I got off of I-294 on 95th Street and if you go east that’s Oaklawn, Illinois and west you would be in Hickory Hills. John Prine was from Oaklawn and a mailman. He would play in Chicago on N. Wells in Old Town where they had a bunch of little bars that each played different music at and I would take my dates to eat, drink and go too different places like wax museum’s and Ripleys believe it or not. We had a bunch of fun there. I would hang out in western Kenosha County and Walworth County where they had ski hills called Wilmot Mountain and the next town west was a town called Twin Lakes. John would hang out there at a couple bars called the Pink Elephant and the Edgewater Inn, and I was working construction then and some of the guys lived there that worked for the construction company that was owned by my Uncle and they were close to the work sites in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, like Crystal Lake and McHenry Illinois. We were at the Edgewater Inn and one guy decided we were going to a house party in Twin Lakes. We went to this house that was like a Trilevel home. In the basement there was a lot of people with chairs and sofa’s and bean bags. The lights were dimmed with different colors and the guy I was with had served in Vietnam and he met John Prine in the Army ad he was going in as John was leaving. In the corner in a bean is this guy playing a guitar and he had a can of Coke a d was pouring either Jack Daniel’s or Jim Bean in the can. He introduced me to John and at that time I never heard of him and we were all kind off loaded. He told him I packed heat and it became like a joke to them and he started singing a song about me and packing heat. My Uncle had just bought a bar on the stateline and a Country and Western nightclub in the city of Kenosha called The Mint Julep. When John started sing Ming about me and packing heat I got mad and told the guy I was leaving and going back to Wilmot Mountain that had a ski lounge and I left. Not long after that I was at a friends house and he had these albums and loved listening to his Marantz stereo system. He put a album on called Diamonds in the Rough by John Prine and I loved it right away. I told I would trade a new album two record set of the hits of Hank Williams and we traded. I still have it, and dig these records out every once in a while. That was the way I seen John Prine, I wished I stayed now. My friend went on a d traded records every now and then. He just passed on not long ago and I never knew he served in Vietnam either, but he had a good taste in music. I got Bob Dylan’s soundtrack from Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, BB King’s live at the Cook County Jail, and a few more good albums including Waylons This Time album. I carried the gun because I was transferring money for the bars at that time.
