Yes, a lot of BBC engineers/producers around that time didn't really 'get' more progressive sounds, cf the terrible sound of the last proper T. Rex BBC session - Jeepster sounds terrible!
I must disagree with you on this one, as Marc, who had released unsuccessful singles prior to joining John's, got his first shot at making the charts with Them. Although songs like Desdemona & Go Go Girl weren't terrific songs, like The Perfumed Garden, they did get him recognized enough, to by the time he & Steve began recording together, listeners knew the name Marc Bolan.
