John Turner of Lenoir, NC came up with this fly and is credited with being the first fly tier in the Great Smoky Mountains to use rubber legs on any fly. This is considered a semi-dry fly and can be fished either on the surface or as a sunken fly similar to a girdle bug.
Hook: #8-10 3x long
Thread: Black
Tail: White rubber tubing
Hackle: Grizzly and brown dry fly
Body: Black dubbing
Front legs/antenna: White rubber tubing

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Hmm. Maybe I should use that Sharpie trick on my own hair. ... Maybe not, I don’t have enough Sharpies. This is a pretty helpful video for tying in the rubber legs. I haven’t tied many flies with them, because of problems locking them down. This video will fix that. Thank you.

Never thought of fishing this as a dry fly, I’ll have to try that! Thanks again

I had to split this video to be able to watch the whole thing. Lol so many calls and things going on. I heard your phone beeping for a message/notificacion. Didn't know it was on your video, and had to re watch to make sure. You need to tell others not to interrupt when you are filming 😄😄😄. I usually put my phone on silent mode 😂

Yes! I thought I did put my phone on silent but I was still getting some annoying alerts. (I can't believe you heard it. I heard it when I was filming, but didn't notice during editing. D'oh!)

Interesting fly, Matt. I'm not sure what John intended with the white rubber legs fore and aft, but maybe he was one of those "trigger" guys.

Jim- that's exactly what I was thinking. I was even trying to talk about that in the intro. I said something to the effect of, "I don't know why he put white legs on it, they look like nothing in nature. I guess they help the fisherman see it and might trigger some of the bigger fish." But I ended up mangling that part of the intro and had to edit it out. Now that I think about it, why do so many girdle bugs have white legs also? It's got to be the trigger effect.
