Part 1: goo.gl/tste7u
----------------
In this clip, John Salley spoke about player protests during his time in the NBA, specifically the Denver Nugget's guard Mahmoud Abdul Rauf who refused to stand for the anthem. His protest effectively ended his NBA career and prompted John Salley to remind players to watch what you do. He also detailed his own activism as a player and why he believes Kaepernick scared Americans with his rhetoric and appearance.

@brotherLee340

@@SoTrue144 ..lol they a joke because they may choose to stand up in different ways. Kneeling for the anthem is not the only way to protest. And Abdul was 20+ years ago..the Nba has changed alot since then. Defintely a players league. Seen how quick they got Sterling ass from outta there

@Re Up ...the Nba allows its players alot more freedom then the Nfl. Thats a fact. Its a ultimate players league..but you are correct in the bigger picture. It's still a company that has certain rules or conduct. But people can be Woke in different ways. Lebron isn't Kap but he speaks out far more than we have seen any superstar. Not to mention when the players wore hoodies for Trayvon...etc.

Mahmoud was super. I remember in college he had a 50 point game. His game was more shack and bake. Unstoppable. What I remember is he would stay in the tunnel. Then naturally one day a reporter asked why. Most people can't fathom sacrifice like him, Craig Hodged, Kaepernick, Ali, Curt Flood and some others. However, what do these men have in common, the same color.

John’s telling of Mahmoud is factually inaccurate. He was a big star at LSU and kind of looks like a smaller Steph Curry, but his NBA stats are closer to Del Curry. He never made an all star game and continued to play for 2 more years after the anthem controversy before signing with Europe, then came back and played one more year with the Grizzlies. His “blackballing” consisted of a one game suspension.

Abdul-Rauf made his protests solitary, with hardly any popular support. He even spoke his mind and truth to power in 2001about neineleven (something that takes true courage and integrity) it cost him the contract the Knicks were going to sign him to, as well as being what really earned him the blackballing.
