Wow. Highly entertaining & edifying at the same time. Had no idea as to the background & reception to this particular portrait which Ive always thought to be absolutely stunning. Thx again GLI, you continue to surpass yourselves in giving one a much greater understanding & appreciation for the fine arts in bringing us these video's.

You've told so much more about this than any other story or video I've seen. Great work as always. Thank you.

“…the Parisian public is always vocal and expressive…” you are far too kind to the Parisians, who are hypocritical, arrogant, and small minded. Madam X was confident in her beauty and in herself …and she was American… and that was reason enough for the hypocrisy and intolerance of the French to “cancel “ Sargent. But you can’t keep a good man down….

A wonderful overview of a great painting. Loving these backstories of well known paintings and revealing why they were so controversial. I was aware of some of the controversy but nothing of Sargent's studies and planning. Thanks so much for your research and in-depth reporting. Happy to have discovered this channel. Sargent is a great favorite, his watercolors especially (and yes, I've your program on his watercolors). Looking forward to more from this channel. Thank you!

"Master of the modern portrait"...and after more than a century, this one work still meets with division: praise, and condemnation. Sargent had named it as one of the best things he'd ever done...and no one could fail to be impressed by a view of the original painting. It's ambition is so apparent, there viewed at full scale. Simplicity of presentation, but amazing presence. Sargent had redefined what portraiture was about...no wonder the painting still causes a stir.
