This version of East of Eden is darn near perfect.Jane Seymour’s portrayal of Cathy Ames is outstanding. She is the most stunningly beautiful woman I have ever seen.. great acting by all the cast.

I am just done with the book and, like every Steinbeck novel I have read, I am stunned at the authors talent. Would love to see this version of the book.

I love this movie. It was filmed in my home town of Hollister. I remember the big white Victorian on the corner of Monterey and south Street. I got a glimpse of Jane Seymour coming out of the mansion. That was cool.

This version so much better then the James Dean version. Very true to the book. Jane Seymour is perfect in this role.

This was a great adaptation of one of my favourite books. The 50s film was wonderful too - but I loved the fact that this one told the whole story. Jane Seymour was perfect as Cathy. I really hope that whoever plays her in the planned remake is as sweetly poisonous .... Kate Winslet would be ideal as would Natalie Portman or Kate Hudson with Eddie Redmayne and Tom Sturridge as Cal and Aaron.

It is not a question of 'which version is better'. They are both terrific. The James Dean version concentrates on Cal Trask. Jimmy Dean was FANTASTIC in that one. The Jane Seymour-version concentrates on the entire book. She is the one I remember the most, but all the actors were sublime, it is beautifully shot and kept me interested till the last minute.

I saw this first, so I expected a lot from the movie. Instead, I hated it. I was shocked the movie picked up halfway through the book, James Dean was playing his stock "You're tearing me APART" character... Jo Van Fleet was not believable, unattractive, and too bloozy, Everything felt rushed. At the very end they used the word "Timshel" for the first time(?!), giving it a sort of retroactive frame of reference so the audience would know the word but not the IMPORTANCE of it... I thought the 1955 movie was just awful. If you can't film the whole story, maybe just leave it be.

The trailer is confusing. Jane is on the cover, but the trailer implies that she's just a small side character. I hope she does have a main role, cuz I only want to see it for her.

I know this is a bit late (understatement of the decade), but Jane Seymour’s character is Cathy Trask, and she’s definitely a major character in East of Eden. Here’s the twist: she’s the villain. And what a villain!

@@brianbommarito3376 And this reply is even later. Agree! People don't understand that Jane Seymour is wasted in goody two shoes roles. She is brilliant as Cathy Trask. One of the best portrayals of evil by an actress on film.

I bought this series a few years ago out of pure curiosity and glad I did. It would be nice if it was remastered but otherwise, very captivating and faithful telling of the book.

I have a vastly edited vhs version of this, cut down to about 3 hours and after seeing this, now I have to get the dvd to see what's missing (I can guess, since I've read the book.) Well, one thing I notice is the preacher in this 1981 min series is the same actor who played Joe the bouncer in the 1954 James Dean starring/Elia Kazan directed "East of Eden." Interesting....

1:06 “If you can bring yourself to face Death, you will never be afraid of anything again in your Life.” Me: “That’s a little bit of an oxymoron, isn’t it? If you’re dead, you can’t be scared of anything. Or happy. Or sad. Or angry. It’s just one big, empty void of non-existence.”

Elia Kazan approached Steinbeck and said he was interested in filming the story, but was mostly interested in what he called the last 80 pages or so. Steinbeck agreed and was heavily involved in the making of that film. Besides this TV film adaptation is probably just as great... although I do prefer Kazan's rendering of certain aspects (the whole Abra-Cal relationship is brilliant in the 1955 film), and I like his portrayal of the hoopla around WWI better, as it feels like it was made by someone who actually lived through that time (and I like how much more time is spent with the effects of WWI on California in the film, rather than the fleeting glance it's given in the TV film). Likewise this TV film does better in different aspects. Jane Seymour did such an outstanding performance here, the 1955 film feels pale in comparison. While James Dean is a far better Cal, this TV film had a better Aaron IMO than the 1955 film. Abra in both the film and this TV film are suitably portrayed, but each actress has a different take on the character. I can buy the Abra-Cal relationship far more in the 1955 film, while in this adaptation, I rather like Abra as an individual character far more, even if I don't "buy" how attracted to Cal she is in this one. I better understand the history and past of the Trasks in this adaptation, but I have a stronger sense of the WWI "present" in the 1955 film. Each has their strong points and weak points and rather than detracting from each other, I think they only support each other... the perfect adaptation would be a blending of the two IMO.
