I’ve never told anyone this, but I feel compelled to share my story concerning this news. Growing up as a child, mom and I only had 3 channels when I was 10, and on Sundays I would go to church, come home and watch Abbott & Costello from 11:30 to 1, then watch the Yanks. This is how I became a Yanks fan. Since 1972, I’ve watched or listened to almost all the Yanks games, and LISTENING to baseball is where it’s at. I have stories of my life that are direct relation to the Yanks….Fast forward to recent history, and I fell victim to an injury that required open chest surgery. I live alone, and I couldn’t walk for almost 7 months….when this happened, I purchased Tune-In to listen to John and he was my rehab and a direct connection to me living. I’ll miss John like I’ve lost a great friend. I’m sobbing as I wrap this up. We all love you John….the epitome of a Professional.
So wonderful. Thank you for sharing that. I am still crying...John and Suzyn have gotten me through so much in my life and gave me so much hope. I was 10 when John began calling the Yankees and I listened to as many games as I could all these years and my kids love him, too. I feel so sad and lost right now, but I understand that this is John's decision and I respect it.
John's legacy with the Yankees goes even further back than when he started in 1989. He was the last link to the 1970s glory days because he did pregame and postgame shows in the 1976 and 1977 postseason with Mel Allen and was there the night Chambliss homered to win the pennant and the night Reggie hit his three homers. John also was in the radio booth when the "Billy rehired" announcement took place in 78. That connection with the team in the 70s in his days when he did the WMCA talk show is why he was easy to embrace when he came back in 1989, and it also shows just how intertwined with Yankee history he is across multiple generations.
Somebody needs to upload all the full gms of Sterling’s best gms called, Wells perfect gm, Cone perfect gm, Subway Series, 2001 WS GM 4 n 5, 2003 ALCS GM 7, 2009 WS GM 6, Jeter 3000th hit, final home gm of Mo n Jeter’s career, etc
Man, it's gonna be weird never hearing him call a game again. I was 11 or 12 in the mid-'90s when I really got into the Yankees, and from then until 2001 Sterling and Kay were an absolute staple on the radio for me. My all-time favorite Sterling calls were for the surreal Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius game-tying 2-run homers with two outs in the 9th in back-to-back must-win (realistically speaking) World Series games in 2001. (The numbers in my username come from the numbers worn by Tino and Brosius, in fact.) Especially his call on the Brosius one. I encourage anyone to look up his call for that on RU-vid (pretty easy to find). When he exclaims the same 4 words that my brother and I, and probably most Yankee fans, exclaimed - "I DON'T BELIEVE IT!" - I get chills every time I hear it. I'll certainly miss that iconic voice of the Yankees...
John sterling has been the voice of the Yankees my entire life 34 years , I was shocked to hear the news he’s retired and I’m glad to hear it’s not him being ill , because I was worried it was
I'm 63......I remember the summer of '73....and his sports talk show on WMCA where he would talk down to the dolts with their incessant requests to know when Ron Blomberg or Elliot Maddox would be back from injury or the progress in the construction of the new Yankee Stadium to the excitement of the trade that brought Micky Rivers and Ed Figueroa to the Yankees to his amazing play by play of the New York Islanders, " Hart...to Potvin, Denny back to Hart....Hart has a shot....GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!" His play by play of the ABA Nets when Dr. J. led them to a championship to his eventual call of 5 championships for Yankees. That's pretty darned good. Finally, Sterling finally tells himself as his used to tell his callers when he had enough...."give it a rest!" Well deserved John. You were not only the soundtrack of the Yankees. You were the sports soundtrack of my youth!
John made listening to Yankee games enjoyable. I always enjoyed listening to them. He wasn’t boring to listen to. John and Susan were constantly talking. Sometimes I’ll listen to other games and they’re boring and I’ll stop listening to them. Not with John. I definitely will miss his voice and enthusiasm and definitely those home run calls. Those are iconic. And there definitely will not be another John Sterling.
It was 30 straight years John Sterling broadcasted Yankee games, not 20 years. What a career!!! So many memories. John Sterling will have a plague at Monument Park & he will be in the Baseball Hall Of Fame...HE BETTER BE!!! THANK YOU JOHN STERLING!!!
I love your "back to back" and "belly to belly" Mr. John Sterling. Surely, you will be missed, the voice of the Yankees. Stay safe, healthy and happy on your retirement. Congratulations on a wonderful, meaningful and sterling career.
Sterling and Kay were magic. How many big games in the Jeter, Bernie, O'Neill, Mariano ERA Dynasty did they announce..... It is High. It is Far. It is Gone. Oh John your announcing was priceless. Like Sterling Silver.❤
Vanessa Bryant, very attractive young Southern California Native - she probably won't remarry HOWEVER, doesn't mean she's not out there. I think it's fair to say she has every right - IYKYK
I go back to Mel Allen and Red Barber announcing Yankees games. I remember listening to John on WABC and WFAN when he talked sports, and when he announced Islanders hockey games. I absolutely love John and Suzyn, and I will miss John profoundly. Thank you, John. You’re one of the all-time greats. 👏👍
Thank you! He made stop listening to Yankees easy cause I was tired of listening to all the mistakes, and never, ever apologizing for the tremendous amount of incorrect and look at me calls…he is the opposite of Marv Albert! Marv is a true professional, always objective and loved his underrated wit…Sterling, Susan and Kay made Yankee games unbearable!
The absolute worst announcer in the history of American professional sports. Followed at a distant 2nd by Susyn Waldman. God Awful. Hopefully the Yanks find a good team again.
