Oh, wow. I remember seeing "Are We Scaring Ourselves to Death." That was the thing that put John on the radar for me. My wife, who was rather left-leaning at the time, was even impressed. In fact, I think it was she who told me about it. Interesting to learn that it was a big deal for Stossel as well.

many libertarians are conservative. they are not mutually exclusive.
@willstikken5619
@willstikken5619 Год назад
@@scottjohnson5132 I think you have that backwards, some "conservatives" are libertarian or embrace libertarian principles. Historically libertarians had as much in common with "liberals" and democrats as they did the GOP and conservatives but this association with conservatives taints the perception of libertarians at a time when the left is moving away from liberalism and classical liberal ideals.
@scottjohnson5132
@scottjohnson5132 Год назад
@@willstikken5619 my larger point is that they are not mutually exclusive.
@willstikken5619
@willstikken5619 Год назад
@@scottjohnson5132 certainly, or at least they didn't used to be. The problem for libertarians is not that they don't have plenty of overlap with the traditional values of either party but rather than the parties no longer believe in those things. Republicans are only in favor of fiscal responsibility and small government when they are the minority party. Democrats only believe in civil liberties when it involves creating new rights for special interest groups. You can certainly have a conservative leaning libertarian but they're really just libertarian that don't realize their party has left them behind.

I have been watching john stossel since i was 5 years old. I was hooked on the news as a child, would watch the news 2-4 hours every day. GMA, dateline, nightline, 20/20, all of the new specials. And john has always been my hero, i am not 37 years old and still love em!

When I was young, "authority" pretty much utterly failed me at every turn, and I learned to look to myself for most things. But I did have one teacher who really took the time to look out for me and he introduced me to Stossel through his book "Give Me a Break." I don't know where I'd be today without that teacher and Mr. Stossel. Keep doing what you're doing John. You really are making a difference.

@ThomasCranmer1959
@ThomasCranmer1959 Год назад
@Clever Witticism Here I already did. In this video Stossel said the experts say that climate change is caused by humans and he agreed with the experts. That is the fallacy of appealing to authority. The so-called science is based on asserting the consequent, another fallacy. If there is climate change, there will be hotter weather. There is hotter weather, therefore there must be climate change. Another problem is how do you determine global temperatures and averages over different latitudes, etc.? And what about time periods? There aren't enough measurements of temperature today to get an average or mean global temperature, much less such information for the past few hundred years.
@cleverwitticismhere6922
@cleverwitticismhere6922 Год назад
@@ThomasCranmer1959 Sorry this response took so long. I got busy and then I forgot about it. Agreeing with experts does not mean you are engaging in the so called "appealing to authority" fallacy. That fallacy only applies when dissenting data is dismissed without consideration because it doesn't agree with "the experts." I don't believe I've seen John dismissing any data because of a lack of credentialing for a person or persons. If you have seen such, I'd like a link to it. It's no fallacy. The global temperature has increased by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. That's climate change as defined as long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Now it can certainly be argued as to how much humans have contributed to the issue. They measure temperatures with weather balloons, sea buoys, and weather stations. There are thousands of them all over the planet. There certainly are enough measurements to get an average or mean global temperature. We've been keeping records about global temperatures for almost a century and a half. Which is admittedly a tiny moment in time for a planet, but as pointed out earlier that 2-degree increase happened during that "tiny moment." We may not have "hundreds of years" of data for "modern" times, but paleoclimatology is a thing and it enables us to track previous weather patterns which does give us some insights into the "climate lifecycle" of the planet. That climate change is happening is no longer really in question by anyone. All the debate nowadays seems to about just how bad the effects will be (or are) and what (if anything) should be done. Though I suppose I can agree that John doesn't really do deep dives into data. For me, it's always been an introduction to an idea that I' hadn't thought about or something I just took for granted as being true. If I want the nitty gritty, I do regularly have to go elsewhere.
@ThomasCranmer1959
@ThomasCranmer1959 Год назад
@@cleverwitticismhere6922 There is no way to determine average or mean or even median temperatures across the various latitudes and longitude of the planet today. And yet you appeal to archaic records from the 1880s? Really?

Another problem? Stossel uses the fallacy of an appeal to authority on the climate change issue. How do you know that it is caused by humans? Stossel appeals to smart people instead of giving us a reasonable answer. The fact of the matter is that the fallacy of induction or assuming the consequent is at work here. Even if we could prove that human activity is causing climate change, that would not prove exactly what human activity or activities is the cause. Could it be urban sprawl or removing of forests and trees? And how do you get an average or mean or medium global temperature? You would need to take billions of measurements at millions of locations over a few hundred years to even establish a rise in temperature. So the whole climate change, global warming thing is a political ideology, not pure empiriical science. Another problem is that even the so-called "science" that is behind this is government funded, not independent research. Government funding tends to result in the fallacy of asserting the consequent or the results that the politicians want.

So Stossel's hatred for Trump blinded him to overlook a Trump brokered middle east peace deal, Non-agreession by China/Rus the his entire term, an incredible Canada/Mexico/US deal, no new wars, cheapest energy in a decade, massive tax cuts that helped the middle class, and a meeting with North Korea's leader and all he could come up with is he's thankful for Trumps mostly worthless cabinet who helped extend the life of social security and medicare? Rofl, talk about blinded by his own bias, you are old Stossel, and No the millennials won't shoulder your needs on our back when you're already fabulously wealthy yet somehow are still only interested in how you will be taken care of in old age at the expensive of the younger generations' ability to provide for their families. .

@@sickandtired967 This is what marching zombies in the US learn. And only this. Sorry, I have no desire (nor need) to argue/debate with zombies (or debate at all). There is no point in arguing with zombies. And when I want to express myself, I say what I need about Hitler, for example, leaving the illiterate psychobabblers to babble about fascism (without knowledge of history - this one was murdered - it is babbling and babbling only). There is much more to human reality than life between water and water on the soil without a war for centuries in a two-day old country. You just don't know that and anything else. Americans have debated themselves to death. There is a value in quiet thinking and broader knowledge (beyond seemingly useful and/or Hollywood imposed), for example, but this value hasn't been discovered yet on this land and looks like it is too late to start. Frankly, what can be more idiotic/illiterate than marching through life chanting "Capitalism is gut, sehr, sehr, sehr gut and because it is sehr, sehr, sehr gut it ends in monstrous wars and/or communism and this is gut, sehr, sehr, sehr gut." When there is no knowledge, no familiarity with historical facts, no familiarity with such concepts as causes and consequences, with centuries old background, societal complexities and human nature, there is ... Orwellianism (sorry, I meant libertarianism) and yes, primitivism (greed is gut, sehr, sehr, sehr gut) dr anna
