I have read this huge volume twice now, and look forward to reading it again in the future. Best writer of the English language!

I miss Mr. Updike so much. I remember when I finished Rabbit At Rest I began sobbing uncontrollably. In the four books I had been through so much with Harry Angstrom, and I believe that Mr. Updike's catharsis was transferred to me the reader. No work of art has affected me as deeply as the Rabbit tetralogy.

well, my friend, that is what a good intentioned author longs to hear. all the lonlieness and drudgery, doubts and frustration - the great writer is only supported ultimately by touching your heart. so, I hope John can hear that. god bless you.

i just want to collapse listening to Updike in this interview. while his prose is unique and astonishing in style, it might be hard - for me - to put him in timeless writers. however, his enormous kindness and work for writers of his time and his caring beyond just himself ... well, so yes, he will never be rightly forgotten nor denied his place in the history of English literature. an extremely kind kind man. incredibly ... politics is mentioned here. he supports Bill Clinton as president ... all politics aside, Clinton was estimated to have the highest I.Q. of all past presidents. i think that estimate was correct. i DO believe in intelligence, but i largely characterize good intelligence as " spiritual " intelligence.

He should have stopped after Rabbit At Rest and finished on a career high. Why don’t Yanks let people speak when they conduct interviews?

Yeah, Rose interrupts Updike when U. is finishing a sentence. I'll be generous and say it's b/c Rose is pressed for time....

From my observation Americans are just generally more informal. Rose appears to view it as a conversation first and an interview second.
