John Wayne is a Hollywood legend with a legacy to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Since his death in 1979, John has remained a beloved historical figure in the eyes of many film fans. However, there are also those that have taken issue with many of the problematic views that John expressed during his lifetime, as well as the fact that he was essentially a propagandist for the American war machine. Much of the ire that cultural historians have begun to take with John stems from a 1971 Playboy interview that was made up of eight hours of recorded footage.

During this interview, John said many troubling things about minority groups such as black people, Native Americans, and homosexuals. While many have written off these remarks as remnants of John’s old-fashioned values, others choose to look at the remarks as the angry blathering of a racist negatively reacting to civil rights victories of the time.
Today, people are still questioning how John Wayne’s legacy should be celebrated, if at all. Two of the biggest ways that the figure is still remembered publicly include John Wayne Airport in Orange Country and John Wayne Day. John Wayne Airport was previously named Orange Country Airport but was renamed to memorialize John Wayne after his 1979 death. John Wayne Day is the actor’s birthday, which is recognized as a holiday in the state of Texas but is routinely rejected holiday status by the state of California.
The war over how to remember John Wayne continues to be waged, and the future of the actor’s legacy remains uncertain. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at whether or not John Wayne was actually a horrible person all along.

Actors play roles. Don't confuse the actor with the performance. If you look under the hood of the entertainment industry you will find many despicable people. I'm not saying Wayne was worse than anyone else. I'm saying that we should not expect actors to be more virtuous than us because they play that part on screen. If you really want to protest an actors personal beliefs don't see their movies. That may only force the actor to change roles to fit the market, that's for the audience to judge.

It's not that we're seeing him through a modern day perspective of through the lens of 2022. There were people and actors from that era who were great allies for Native Americans, African Americans, and LGBT+ folks, so saying that "He was a product of his time" isn't really a good excuse because he had contemporaries during the same time period who didn't hold the same backwards views he had. Not to mention he was a horrible actor (in my opinion) so I really don't understand the love for him anyway. So naming a holiday after him to me, is absurd.

Not surprising at all, many old timers from that generation have and had the same values and morals but that does not negate holding him to the standards we have today, it is not really fair to judge him by todays morals, ethics and values of today. Amen. I think many of his old school positions, while not popular among liberals, were far better for America. I don’t find Duke problematic. I don’t find him notorious. Many of the characters he played, indeed to the world, he is the face of America. Wayne’s views were the mainstream in the 40s. I resent your effort to judge a man from Duke’s era by the “standards” of today. I feel no shame for slavery either. I wasn’t around and had nothing to do with it. Duke had a right to feel however he wanted to feel. You may not like what he said, but he was a straight-shooter and called things as he saw them. Whether I agree with every view is not important. That he was honest about it was. Would that we had more honest people today. He is remembered for his screen heroes, and they were-and remain-iconic. Even a half a century after his death, he is America to much of the world. And it’s a good image.

No, of course not, John Wayne's image has not been tarnished in my mind. Ask any person questions for eight hours and they are sure to reply with something that others will disagree with. The image of John Wayne is one of individualism. The responsibility we have to maximize our potential to contribute to society in the fashion one chooses. This does not leave much room for socialist decrees that apparently some folks take offense with. We may not be perfect in every ones' eye, but America has become more inclusive than other countries have. Maybe even too inclusive. Now, I take offense with those who believe that the freedom we enjoy today should be supplanted by their standard of political correctness. I prefer to live in a society that seeks to enhance overall wellbeing by facilitating the role of individual choice.

John Wayne was no different to most folk in the opinions he held and the statements that he made. One must consider the time and era he grew up in, and the political and social norms of his day. Wayne was never a horrible person; in fact, he was ALL American. He loved his country, and he believed in the bravery of the American people and most certainly in his nations Global supremacy. John Wayne was a very down to earth man, not an arrogant bone in his body in spite of his huge fame and wealth. He was actually a very easy going and humble human being. There were some actors of his time that were very liberal minded when it came to homosexuality and native American land rights. However, the general public largely and in the main agreed with Wayne. People's opinions of African Americans were shaped by the Hollywood script writers. Blacks were never depicted in a favourable light by the film Industry for decades, can't blame Wayne for that. Today's society would despise John Wayne, after all these are the people that are burning the American Flag now, while raising Rainbow flags everywhere, including on Church buildings.

I don't understand why everybody has to rewrite history he was what he was he was a human being who was very flawed and his time went on he found his views out of Step with the newer dawning generation. I have and I always will enjoy John Wayne's films for what they are. We may all wake up one day and find out that our views are out of step with an incoming generation at some point. I see nothing wrong in bringing up Wayne’s 1971 interview with Playboy and his racist and anti gay view’s. I believe it contradicts the views that many, if not most, Americans have towards Wayne. His movies portrayed him as heroic. In reality, he was anything but heroic. What your video failed to reveal was Wayne’s “ draft dodger” status during WWII. Yep, the hero of “The Sands of Iwo Jiima “ ran for the hills rather than serve on active duty like many of his counterparts. So, yes, Wayne’s viewpoints and actions decades ago are relevant when trying to find the truth about the man. Let us not forget that Wayne was booed off the stage while on a USO tour in New Zealand during WWII by Marines of the First Marine Division. We should always seek out the truth.

A lot of old timers were taught to think like this from an early age. My grandmother thought many of the same things Wayne did. Even though I'd have discussions and even arguments with her over her ideas I still loved her. In her youngest most impressionable years she was taught most of the same things as Wayne and everyone in her community believed the same things. There was no getting away from it at that time. My question to her though was as an adult and seeing how things have changed how can you hold the same views? But I agree with what someone else said. It's unfair to judge John Wayne by something he said in 1971 vs. what we know and beleive today. I'd hate to have things I believed in several DECADES ago used against me now. Not that I was ever hateful or racist but we learn things as we grow. If we are living right, we are supposed to grow and do so for the better. Now if John Wayne were still alive and his views hadn't changed at all, then that's a problem.

Later i realized he had quite a few flaws. He was bigoted, small minded, xenophobic, and stupidly worked to blacklist anyone who didn’t fit his view of patriotism. But perhaps he is best seen as a mirror of many of the people of his time. I am sorry he caught cancer and ironically got it from filming close to a nuclear test area from which half of the cast eventually got cancer. Less because of his terrible views and more because he was a terrible actor. His films were boring and predictable, with the exception of True Grit and The Shootist. Two things I find it hard to forgive him for. He was so gung-ho and desirous of young men getting their heads shot off, but when it came to his turn, it was crickets. People like James Stewart and Henry Fonda served; others like Bob Hope toured for the forces, John Wayne - nothing. The second he had to be held back from beating up a woman - the girl who accepted Brando's Oscar for The Godfather. Real brave guy, huh? Over six foot beating on a lone woman. Yes, I dislike him heartily. I thought he was a hypocritical coward and a pretty woeful actor. But cancelling him? Renaming the airport? No. Let's just forget about him.

He had a broken shoulder from college ball. not bone spurs or fleeing to Canada. And he was born in 1907 so in WW2 he would have been 33 or 34, not exactly the prime fighting age.

I think all this judging someone whose long gone and can't defend themselves is pretty sad on it's own. A different time, different people and different environment. I don't agree with everything he had to say but again a different time and different views of the time. I bet if the people from the past could look at what we have become in a lot of ways they'd have a lot to say too! Stay humble and work for a better future and leave the judgement to god! Also, we don't need a john wayne day or any other actor or singer day with that said!

He was alive during the civil rights movement. You're acting like he was alive in the 17th century. He was a racist who refused to change with the times, he shouldn't be put on a pedestal.

The Green Berets was only meant to promote the Green Berets, which was the idea of smaller teams of trained individuals going into conflict areas and using non violent means to create resistance against military dictatorships. That was the first special forces in America. You are dead wrong and should correct yourself.

@@michaelharrington7656 He said in an interview in 1971 that him and Wayne never saw eye to eye, but they were respectful to each other and professional. It is impossible to ignore the fact that John Wayne was an incredibly racist individual that rubbed people the wrong way, so Kirk calling him John was a polite and professional response. I doubt every individual called him Duke, especially in working environments.
