You do need to watch these in order really. Each sequel starts immediately where the previous one ended. One big long story.

Great review, John. I rewatched the first three in preparation for this release and it definitely helps. It also makes you appreciate the amount of fun the makers were having with Chapter 4. For such a long film, it nevers drags, and you get the impression they wanted to make this (presumably) final part a tribute to the character, rather than burdening him with too much additional plot! I know there's an unwritten rule that the first film in a franchise is always the best, but JW4 makes a strong case for itself. I thought it was magnificent.

@@andyessex Morning Andy. You may find it interesting to read through the comments on here so far because it's generated rather a mixed response which has surprised me somewhat. I expected everyone would be raving about John Wick 4 but it seems that most prefer the first film. I can't comment as I haven't seen it but this sort of thing has happened before where many of us see the latest film and having enjoyed what has gone before have loved every minute of the latest sequel. But then years later, we look at the series again and can see the first film was best. The film I'm thinking about most here is Return of the Jedi which we all seemed to unanimously love at the time of release in 1983 but when we looked at it again years later we wondered what the bloody hell was so good about it! I do still like Return of the Jedi but it's comparatively poor against Star Wars and most of us see that now in spades. John.

@@moviecollector5920hard for me to believe how possibly can a 35mm print be superior to a 4.5k video format in terms of detail and sharpness? Ofcourse video won't look a bit softer or have that film grain like texture to give it a "cinematic" look (it also depends on the kind of lenses that were used),if that's your look of preference. Video format has come a long way. I get it that a 35mm = 5k something but those are just numbers and the perceivable difference would be if you have 200" plus screen and you are sitting just 8 feet away. Just my thoughts
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
@@arkcave149 It's all mainly down to perceptions but there is sharper resolution from 35mm negative when fine grain stock is used and it's full frame 35mm such as 2.40:1 anamorphic. That doesn't mean a general release print would have greater resolution than a 4.5K video but the way things are done now means that a movie shot on 35mm film will have better end results than 4.5K video. However, much of the problem is that it requires more skilled technicians and there aren't many of them now as the years of experience we had before the big downgrade in 2011 has been reduced because people have gotten older and retired. Many have also been moved onto shooting with video and inevitably things they used to know when handling film cameras has been forgotten. Directors such as Christopher Nolan have the clout to get films made on the best formats known to man and that is why his more recent films are right at the top of the best quality 4K discs so far released. Video is great now and no longer the poor relation but until Doug Trumbull's shutter in video cameras and video projectors method is widely adopted, it's never going to quite match the perceived quality of film. Although having said that, I seem to be able to get my budget home video projectors to present imagery that is better than the professional video projectors in cinema in terms of representing a facsimile of film. My theory of why this is so is because everyone in the industry now is rather obsessed with brightness and the brighter an image is the better it is. This could be the main reason why cinema video projection looks so harsh compared to film but the lack of a shutter is another factor. John.

The image quality of this should be almost precisely what you saw in a cinema Dave as it's a simple conversion from the video master file to the format specific to the 4K disc. The Blu-ray hasn't converted well though but then it doesn't have the colour and density capabilities of HDR unique to the 4K discs. Definition isn't as good as I was anticipating but if it hadn't have been for the IMAX claim then I'd have thought it was excellent for a movie shot on video. It certainly looks filmic so quite an achievement in that regard which yet again confirms that video is no longer anything to be embarrassed about and the industry can probably drop the 'digital' label now and just call it what it is. I suppose saying it's digital makes the makers feel better about themselves so there's little chance of that. John.

John, when you said you hadn't seen the previous John Wick films and went ahead with Chapter 4, the film geek inside me screamed "Nooo!!" Anyway, I believe there comes a movie once a while which I consider to be a "landmark" film, one such has the intensity and quality of filmmaking that's gonna be remembered in future as one of the best of its kind. For the last decade, for me, the such a top-notch action movie was Mad Max Fury Road, and since then I can say John Wick 4 rises above all in action since the 21st century. By no means it's a perfect film, but the positives are so damn much high that the negatives don't really bother me at all. I saw this at the opening weekend 3 months ago and since then it's been a part of my daily memory, I can't seem to get it off of its action direction and iconic visuals and soundtrack yet. I hope you give yourself a proper watch of all 4 movies in order to see how Chad Stahelski has made something unique and great action cinema, I also recommend watching his few interviews about his references to JW4 and his understanding of all filmmaking components as a director, if you're really interested in all that. Lastly, I don't remember gun sounds from all directions in the theatre, but in one particular scene the swishing of arrows was audible dynamically. The opening scene had incredible bass, you know, seat shaking and that iconic oner near the end, spectacular (from gamer's perspective as well).
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
Morning Neo. I prefer action films to have more story and character rather than one choreographed scene to the next for no apparent reason other than to showcase the capabilities of the film makers and the stunt men. Interestingly I think Mad Max: Fury Road is a much better film but I can't exactly tell you why. It's possible that we know all that we need to know about the characters in that one before the action starts and so for those like yourself who have seen and enjoyed the previous John Wick movies, you already knew all you needed to know before the video projector fired up. I do wonder if you'll look at it in years to come and wonder why you liked the fourth one so much though because it was so over the top that the main character had no vulnerability at all. It's a lot of fun and it drew crowds of youngsters into cinemas so that's all that matters. If it were edited down to two hours I think I'd have liked it a lot more but the thought of putting it on again for another near three hour session isn't something I'm likely to want to do for a few years. I do suspect I'll enjoy it more though which might seem contradictory given what I said above. The IMAX claim didn't help my enjoyment as it gave the impression it would be a bit special to look at like Top Gun: Maverick but it's not in that league. Without that IMAX claim I'd have appreciated the image quality more but the comparatively poor definition belied that IMAX label. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Understandable. I grew up watching HK action films, particularly of Jackie chan, Sammo Hung, etc. So yes I was more immersed in action than the story, not saying those HK didn't have a story but their story weren't exactly prioritized, especially for the 90s films. Each of the JW sequels isn't exactly a "complete story", and JW4 was meant to be the closing chapter. Even with lack of 3 dimensional characterization, watching them in order will give enough context to be enjoyable. Truth be told, one could say there was no need for any sequels as JW1 is a completed story and good enough on its own. I'm still glad these happened even if they are more video gamey. Unfortunately JW4 wasn't shot in IMAX, that's just the advertising to get people in theaters so the picture quality might not be comparable to Top Gun Maverick, or the upcoming Mission Impossible 7.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
@@neobellic7258 The main thing is that each sequel made increasingly bigger profits Neo and that's unusual. I expect the first film found a massive audience on DVD and the people who enjoyed the DVD then went to see the second film at the cinema and it's continued to grow since then. I think the fourth film may have inadvertently spoiled similar success when John Wick Chapter 5: Zombie comes out because it was too long and that could keep people away from the a fifth but that remains to be seen. There's no doubt the look, colour and definition of this one is excellent. Just doesn't have quite the definition it should have given it was being projected on faux IMAX screens around the world. Hello, John. Good to see you again. Well, for me the first JW movie is by far the best of the saga and (it's a miracle!!) tomorrow will be released here on 4K, go figure how happy I am. This fourth movie is an action festival of epic scale. No doubt that we are talking about one of the top action movies of this century, even if 169 minutes of length can be a challenge, but picture quality and sound are outstanding. But once again, Keanu Reeves shows why, together with Tom Cruise, are the the major Hollywood action stars. Thank you for the review, always great.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
Keanu Reeves appears to have been directed to be almost robotic in this one so maybe it's not one of his better performances but who cares when the movie is as successful as this has been. The colour and density give this one a good filmic look but it is a bit lacking in definition and at the end titles I got up to check I hadn't knocked the focus out but alas, that's how it is. I was expecting more because of the fake IMAX labelling but it was nowhere near. I think most anamorphic 35mm are better over the past 25 years or so but it should be up there with larger format films which it certainly isn't. I bet it gives a much better impression on most tellies though simply because of the size differential which can disguise just about anything that may be lacking. If it hadn't have been for that IMAX association then I'd have probably been waxing lyrical about how amazing this is for a movie shot on video. John.

This disc really is a full-on assault on the senses John 😅 The tokyo scenes in particular show the benefit of HDR over SDR for sure. I also loved the warriors homage, especially as i had only gotten round to watching the warriors a few months before seeing this in cinemas 👌 Like many others have stated already, u really need to have seen these in order. The first is the most grounded action-wise and arguably the best standalone movie of the 4. I think u’ll enjoy it the most. U’ll also get slowly acclimatised to the ‘beautiful violence’ of gun-fu gradually watching them chronologically. Each ramps up until the full on video-game like feel of the last chapter especially. Definitely check them out 👍😃⚡️ And of course thank you ever so much for the plug John. It was a shame HMV didn't have the 1 to 4 box in stock but it did mean that I was able to purchase a couple of other new releases for possible review so it's not all bad. One day I think I'll give the first film a try because it's unfair to judge a third sequel as the single, overall impression of a series. @@ElectricGeek I tend to watch most RU-vid videos on the telly but there's no chance of putting comments in through a Smart TV so I want to let you know how much I enjoyed your video last night. I've been finding some bargains lately such as the 4K of The Town for £2 in a charity shop plus a few other 4K's for between £2 and £3.50 for the triple disc of TENET. I needed a second copy of Tenet so that way handy because my original disc has packed up. That's the fourth 4K I've spotted so far that's developed a similar break-up until it freezes fault. I don't think many 4K collectors look at their discs very often so I do wonder if there's a bigger problem out there waiting to be uncovered. I've also been finding some pretty good Blu-ray titles in a 3 for £1 deal. Fortunately, unlike yourself, no one has recognized me in any shop yet so I think never putting my phizog on a thumbnail has been a good plan. Great review. I picked up the same version as yourself. I want drawn in by the other editions. However there is a directors cut coming apparently with another 15 minutes or so added. As some have said, it’s a must watch of all 4 back to back as they’re one big film and continue like LOTR etc. Also if you get on with these and enjoy them, you may like “Nobody” also. The image is a little too digital / video in its definition but as you say, the star of the show is the colours and all those shadow details on my OLED looks lovely.

Evening Martin. I was hoping a director's cut would be 45 minutes shorter but someone has got too powerful methinks. I've seen NOBODY and I think it's much better than this film. That one was a real surprise and I really enjoyed it. I didn't think John Wick 4 looked too digital, in fact I meant to say it looked filmic and a good facsimile of a 35mm anamorphic film but just lacks the definition of a 35mm which could be down to lighting or lenses chosen. Amazing quality for a video though even if it's not up to the IMAX label that was applied to fool the unsuspecting. I think that raised my expectations. John.

Evening John, I must admit, I think with a little editing and shortening it would make the film a little better. However as you pointed out it’s not really a thinking movie and more a strap in and enjoy the ride film. Maybe the digital look I found comes from me watching it on a TV compared to projector maybe. Compared to something like Maverick it’s no contest. I enjoyed Nobody more too compared to this film, so I suspect you may enjoy the other Wick films as they hold a little more story to them rather than just walk to wall action. I look forward to your next review. Kind regards Martin

My wife and I were just talking about that ridiculous staircase ordeal owing to an earlier comment and I suggested that the same director has done all four films so it's possible that no one dare speak up when he's taking things a little too far for fear of losing their job. This does happen when some directors are consistently successful and they stop listening to others. I'd have chopped it down so that he got up the stairs as quickly as possible. The Warriors is a great film. 'Nuff said. I was told about the collapse of Network a few minutes after the staff were told they were being put into liquidation. The owner had died a year or two before and since then business had all but disappeared so that's probably the reason for it more than anything else people might be saying.

Hi John. I’m a huge Keanu fan and I love all the JW movies but especially this one and the original. I think the wide shot fight sequences and long takes are amazing and I love how much they are influenced by and pay homage to Hong Kong cinema and older action movies. They are refreshing in this day and age of woke pg13 crap that we’re bombarded with. The run up to this film had me revisiting older movies that I grew up watching eg Jackie Chan films like police story and many others plus Donnie Yen movies and now Scott Adkins who is an amazing British martial arts actor (he played Killa in JW4) and I’m still watching them now! I read you preferred Nobody to JW4. I highly recommend the original JW to you because nobody is very like the original JW. A surprise low budget hit and if the Nobody films continue they could easily be like the JW series.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
Ah, now all you've said makes a lot of sense to me Tom because I don't care for martial arts films. I can watch extracts and bits and pieces but I just don't get on with them otherwise, not even Enter The Dragon which I haven't seen for years but even at a young age I remember not thinking that much of it. The action choreography in John Wick 4 is amazing even if I did pick up on the limitations. I would have edited around most of that to disguise it but I know how attached we can get to what we've captured and therefore want it to appear in the final product. Sometimes you just have to cut it and get used to the new version of the product and see how much better it flows when it all finally assembled. Some directors get too powerful though and no one is able to stand up to them. I do wonder if that is the case with this film. The running time does suggest a bit of self-indulgence because I'd have sat at the table and cut and cut and cut until I had it working at around 2 hours. That would not only make for a more easily watched film but would help cinemas to get the money in because almost three hours means one less screening every day. I hope there isn't a sequel to NOBODY because it works fine as a standalone and it would get tiresome to run the same thing again. I suspect I'll think the same when/if I finally look at the first John Wick film. Surely he couldn't have played Superman in that one because without any vulnerability it wouldn't have worked. Only now there is a fan base can the makers get away with that methinks. The fundamental thing about John Wick 4 is that it made a huge amount of money for the industry and cinemas. That's the main criteria in defining a successful film. John.

@@moviecollector5920 so apparently the original edit was 4+ hours long and this is the cut down down version!😂 I think the fact that it still made huge profits and gained positive reviews shows that the runtime hasn’t really affected it. I would usually say similar to you and 90 mins-2 hours is usually a runtime I prefer for films especially in this day and age when almost all “blockbuster” films seem to needlessly be 2.5-3hrs long. You'll enjoy it more if you watch it from the beginning. There are some theories that this is actually happening in a different area of the Matrix. They talk about everyone being "Under The Table." A table and a matrix can be synonymous. One theory is that when Neo dies in the third Matrix movie, he ends up being transformed into John Wick in a lower level of the Matrix where he's being kept busy between grieving his wife and fighting so he doesn't realize he's the one and give the machines any more grief! That might be why it seems like it's happening in a video game. If so, this would be an unofficial sequil to the original Matrix trilogy.

@@hdavemi6667 2K upscales do benefit from the VistaVision effect if they've been shot at higher bit rates and/or with good lenses so that's not much to worry about. Where it doesn't work so well is when a 35mm negative has been transferred at 2K when the original equates roughly to 6K but I think that is largely caused by ignorance in the film industry who have been convinced that film isn't as good as digital video so the lowest viable option will do. I did look up the box office gross of the first John Wick film and I think the budget was around $20m and the worldwide take was around $80m. That at a time when disc sales were still very good indicates it was another massive financial success even if half the box office is for the cinemas screening the film. It sounds to me like the John Wick film has run out of steam as story seems to have gone out of the window almost completely. At least the paying public wouldn't be under the illusion they're seeing something in genuine IMAX with different names on all the sub-standard versions. Great review John! I think the first John Wick film is the best and each is progressively not quite as good as the previous one. In the first film he was a flawed and vulnerable character and by the 4th he has become an invincible superhero which lessened my enjoyment somewhat, but it is very action packed! I have got my tickets for Oppenheimer at the BFI IMAX, I can't wait! Did you get yours? I recently got BFI membership and saw 'To Have and Have Not' and 'The Big Sleep' at Southbank in 35mm, that was a great experience of what it must have been like to watch those great noir movies in the cinema when they were released.

I was a member of the BFI for years and had some great evenings down there. That was when I lived in the West End but those days came to an end early on when the anti-car policies started because I could see what was coming and knew it was time to get out of my home town. Terrible times and heartbreaking to finally sell up and bail out but it had to be done. Quite a few comments have said similar things about the John Wick films but you're the first to say about the John Wick character turning into a superhero. I'd have preferred a shorter film with a little more vulnerability because it got too ridiculous by the end of it. Apparently the fifth film is going to see John Wick return as a zombie!!! John.

Apparently Bristol is going through something similar now but I hadn't heard about a congestion tax there. Birmingham has something so that's now off limits and only today there were reports of the damage inflicted on business in Brighton owing to anti-car policies which is reckoned to cost £1m per annum. Crystal Skull was a big disappointment for me but going to give it another go soon on 4K. The latest Indy film seems to be getting very lukewarm reviews unfortunately 😕

According to IMDB the film was shot digitally with Arri Alexas both LF and mini LF. For the buget I dont think it was shot using digital Imax cameras. The film does look softer a bit in HD and 4K, probably due to shallow depths of fields or it was the intent. The HDR palette produced by neon lights is just top notch. These movies are for martial arts and stuns fans. The coined word "Gun-Fu" comes to mind. Great video as always! 👌

That fills in some of the gaps in what I could find and work out about it. I do wonder if the lenses selected were to give the slightly softer look but the IMAX association appears to have been more than a little misleading. I don't know why it was applied to this film with it clearly not being as sharp as current anamorphic 35mm capability and also in the 'Scope format. IMAX is 1.40:1 but there are faux IMAX video projections at 1.90:1 so I thought it might have had two different aspect ratios for different cinema screens. It seems not so I think I can call that IMAX claim a con on this occasion. But people are easily fooled and I'll expect some to tell me they saw this film in IMAX as a result. At that point I'll probably go off on a rant!!! John.
@MrPancrasio007
@MrPancrasio007 Год назад
@@moviecollector5920 Yeah. I totally get your rant. Since IMAX introduced in '08 the Digital "LIEMAX" in the 2K two projection system, the term has been very misleading and unnecessarily confusing. And, let's bear in mind that 2K Digital IMAX (1.90:1) is what you'll find most in worldwide venues, and blown up over big screens, this looks exceptionally soft - later came laser 4K Digital. This can even be traced back to the 2000s with their infamous DMR upconversion process used with conventional 35mm films which helped movies look better to some extent. IMAX has sacrificed its original 70mm quality in exchange for reaching a wider, global audience with 2K digital projections and upconversion. Creating new 70mm venues to show Nolan's productions, or DOCUs, is just not feasible. About 10 years ago, the company also came up with the initiative of "certified" digital cameras, and the Alexas LF and Mini LF (4.5K) belong to this elite class. Hopefully, most cinephiles are aware of all the types of IMAX formats and their features as well as knowing what cameras were used on modern "IMAX" films.

I will keep my eyes open in HMV to see if the first film is singing like a bird at any time. Just watching the fourth film didn't work and I think the first will be a little more cerebral as I don't really care for films where I have to take my brain out! Particularly for almost three hours! John.

Yep the 1st John Wick is head and shoulders above the others and when you watch it John you'll see why.. it's as "film"... but really well put together with good performances... 2 is literally follows on but isn't as good BUT still entertaining... 3 are pure action nonsense (enetertaining enough but boring, with fight after fight after fight so for me, 3 being mostly bad imho)... so for me, for this genre of film, JW1 = 10/10, JW2 = 8/10, JW3 = 4/10 and I've got JW4 to watch sitting here... 3 was a really poorly constructed film tjat turned the franchise to nonsense so I'm hoping they're back on track with JW4.

I fear that you may find the latest film to be more of the same Mark but I hope not. I tend to prefer films that make me think and this ain't it. I do like action movies but usually they have more about them than this too and certainly more humour to help them along. I did laugh once or twice in this but I think comedy relief was lacking a little. See what you think. There are plenty of good aspects to it irrespective of what I've said. John.

I thought this was good , but the weakest of the 4 imo , overly long and got a bit bored of the constant tumbling of bad guys at one point... Looked superb and sounded not too bad on 4k though ...

John, it's interesting that you girl-tioned Walter Hill's 1978 cult-item 'THE WARRIORS' because i was always impressed with how superbly photographed and brilliantly choreographed the fight sequence in that 'bog/carsey/crapper' was, although i was never that impressed with the rest of the film (except for the gorgeous 'Deborah van Valkenburgh', of course!, what a babe, COR...WOW...WEY-HEY...! ! !).

That version of The Warriors I show is the Super 8 3x400ft cut down to about 48 minutes from Marketing Film International who had a deal for full length product from Paramount. That changed the movie collecting world because up to then all studios had insisted on 20% cuts for release to the home purchase market. I think The Warriors is a better film in this 3x400ft edition because it rolls along at such a pace and keeps you glued to the screen. A lesson for action film makers today perhaps. However, owing to contractual obligations the original front and end titles could not be used in a cut down. Gawd knows why but that was the way it was back in the late 70's/early 80's and that's the only downside to that wonderful release. Basic titles replaced the originals. John.
