To clamp you paddle take a vice and make two jigs (one for each side) out of wood such that the each jig has 2 - 45 degree angles that will essentially grab the handle on the 45 degree bevels thus stabilize it in multiple directions. You could also add rubber to the jigs thus making the contact point not rigid (more like a hand). The challenge will be how to measure the force being applied to the handle such that you can keep it consistent between different paddles, especially given not all handles have the same beveling link the standard tennis racquet does.
@brianbanks3044
@brianbanks3044 5 месяцев назад
i think if you took a garage door spring and cut it down to clamp in a vice and put the paddle handle into the center of it, it could simulate the rebound of a human hand....it is just an Idea in my head really quick but something along that line would provide consistent pressures

Great 3rd pod. John the "stone tool" Kew has a nice ring to it. That BJ/CJ vs TM/DB 3rd was so great to watch. Black N Ge are gonna be a force. The serve issue is getting absurd. I hope the "drop only" NEVER gets implemented. I hit my serve almost out of my hand and below my knee. Not a ton of power, but always in. Also noticed the "sound" of the new Joola. Looking forward to the "CHUCK" and those new paddles. The AIR BENDER with the "throat hole" caught my eye. Speaking of eyes, I have six different brands of of eye pro and NEVER play w'o eye pro. Fogging is my biggest problem. Been playing in "Shield" stlye glasses that road cyclist wear.

Are you using nothing currently? If so, why would you not just use the same ones that you use for indoors? Have you looked at SportRX prescription sunglasses? Finally, since you mentioned footwear, I would be interested to hear what you like. I’m finding my Asics Gel-Dedicate 7’s don’t breathe well. Obviously stability is important.

The weight located in the handle is something I've been working on, drill a 3/8th hole the length of the paddle handle, approximately 3 1/5 inches. Insert a 3 1/5-inch metallic tube inside the drilled hole. Install a lead ball inside the tube. Seal the end cap. The weight of the lead ball mostly depends on the desired weight requested by the user. Centrifical force is transferred to the paddle's head as the player swings.

Great pod. Valid point regarding inconsistency of the bounce on a drop server. That said if it is the only legal way to serve it stops looking stupid because it is what everyone, including the pros, are doing, and in time it will feel and look normal. And I agree, players should use every weapon they can (including the serve) so Dekel and big poppa jimmy will always have a nasty serve. And I don't personally like to use it but the drop serve takes "pushing the limit" (i.e. violating the rules) out of play and I fully disagree that it wasn't getting out hand and would continue to get more out hand the more referees are loose (i.e. don't call) faults on the serve.

Thanks for a great update. I have always felt that pickleball bags are way overpriced for the size they offer. Few are worth investing in (CRBN, Volair, etc.). If you are looking for more space, tennis or squash bags are by far better and more economical. Bags like Wilson, Tecnifibre, and Yonnex, are far superior including the materials used.

as a table tennis player I agree, there's less violations and while I almost always use a topspin or side spin serve, the various flicks I can give without worrying about it are more akin to what I can do with serve variation in table tennis in working the ball - it's great. Big Poppa Jimmy has that serve figured out as well. Smoking hot. How much does the swing/motion of that unit add to the 1 joule of power? Thinking that if I’m moving forward and hit a ball it goes further/faster than if I stop before swinging.

Good point - you can also just press it into the paddle to trigger the spring mechanism, which is what I would do to standardize it
@johnclikeman5041
@johnclikeman5041 5 месяцев назад
Very interested in your section on the "Rebound" test. You said that the test wasn't effective because the results didn't correlate to pop results, but I wonder if what's happening instead is that we're finding a third measure of playability; rather than power vs. pop, there is actually power (energy imparted on full swings) vs. pop (energy imparted on short swings) vs. rebound (energy imparted without swinging at all), and each are different while telling you important things about how the paddle performs. It would be very interesting if you actually got a metric for the "springiness" of the paddle that measures only how effectively the paddle face returns energy back to the ball. This is worth looking for because while there are some factors like swingweight that correlate positively to power and negatively to pop, power and pop are positively correlated to each other. So there must be some underlying factor that contributes to both of these metrics, and "springiness" or something like it is the obvious candidate. It seems like this is the last fundamental property of a paddle that we don't have a way to measure yet.
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball 5 месяцев назад
Interesting thoughts. I need to go back to the data and have a look. I remember not being able to make sense of the rebound data, except noting that it correlated with swing weight. But maybe the thickness/springiness of the core also played a role. The Diadem Warrior and ProDrive Drive are both 19 mm cores, and they both scored high on rebound
@adamheath4599
@adamheath4599 5 месяцев назад
@@johnkewpickleballhonestly, judging by your scatterplots alone, there isn’t really a correlation between either pop and swing weight or power and swing weight. Granted, there are alot of confounding variables that would make it hard to actually see the correlations. But a .06 correlation coefficient is so small that it really chalks up to no correlation, generally in statistics, this does change from which field you are applying it to, a weak correlation would be considered 30-50% and a moderate would be 50-70% and strong would be 70%.

Great video guys. I think you should change the metric for spin to RPS (Revolutions Per Second), because it's a more realistic depiction of how many times the ball spins before reaching another player...it never takes a minute. So a 1800 RPM becomes 30 RPS and a 1200 RPM becomes 20 RPS. The differences are shown, but aren't compounded by time. For that matter, FPS (Feet Per Second) might be a better depiction than MPH when you're considering the power of a paddle. So 50 MPH becomes 73 FPS and 45 MPH becomes 66 FPS. A 7 feet per second difference on a 44 foot pickleball court seems more impactful than a 5 MPH difference. It's a game of feet and seconds, not a game of miles, hours and minutes. I know it's all relative, but those are my thoughts.
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, John. I see your point, and I like the idea of FPS, given that the difference is more obvious. But switching to RPS for spin would have the opposite effect, obscuring some of the performance differences among paddles. E.g., the best spin in my testing is 2,300 RPM. And some of the worst spin for RCF paddles is around 1,600 RPM. If you convert those to RPS, you get 38.3 versus 26.6. It's less obvious that these two values provide drastically different levels of spin.
@CheetahPickleball
@CheetahPickleball 5 месяцев назад
That's my point. In that one second, there is very little difference in spin metrics between paddles. This makes sense, because USAP puts limits on surface roughness and coefficient of friction. But if you continue the spin over a minute, the small difference adds up to a bigger difference. But there is never a minute between shots. So while RPM differences look good, they aren't really realistic.

Agree with your views on drop serves, it looks stupid and reinforces the appearance of a retirement village activity. The two reasons given are a) de-weaponize the serve and b) make the rules enforceable. I think that the former is ridiculous, and the latter has proven to be a complete failure. One set of subjective criteria has replaced the existing subjective criteria........ not to mention that the serve should be a weapon. Next, they'll say tall players need to bend over when they serve or serves will be done off a tee....... very lame. I would rather they deregulate the serve, anything short of an overhead.

When I teach new people I only teach the drop serve because it avoids the (for anyone who is already overwhelmed with the rules and especially what seems like weird and archaic rules for someone coming from Tennis or squash) violation heavy aspect of the volley serve - which seems essentially uninforceable. Local clubs here have you put a dot on your belly button, but thecontact point is easy to see but the tip of paddle is harder to see.
