Curious on the spin loss isn't it better maybe to look at the percentage loss instead of just a pure number? So for example the Ruby would have a 15 percent loss, gear box 11 percent loss, Black ace 18 percent loss.

I built my own rebounder using an OSB board as the hitting surface backed with some 2x4 framing to stiffen it up. It is supported by a stand up base that attaches on the sides that allows me to adjust the angle of the rebounder. I attached some 2mm EVA foam to fhe face of the rebounder which quiets it a bit and adds a little extra rebound. I have not experimented with thicker EVA but I figure there is some sweet spot for max rebound, after which going thicker may have the opposite effect. The adjustable angle is key because a slight upward angle will make some drills more realistic with the balls coming back to you with a little bit of loft instead of immediately dipping downward. My current rebounder is 4'x4' and is set up for 1'below the net and 3' above the net.

Liked. In terms of spin decay over time, it would be very interesting to test the Proton with its lifetime warranty on the spin coating. The fact that a couple of pros have used the same paddle for months is intriguing.

i have noticed a noticeable difference between my 3 month old Ruby (I play 5-6 times a week 2-3 hours per session) and a brand new Ruby..I can definitely feel the difference with my hand on the smoothness on the face compared to the edges where the edge guard stops the ball from hitting in that area.....the older one still has good spin but not compared to a New Ruby....i have 3 of them now and rotate them so they will all wear down slower and I get more life out of all of them as a group

I appreciate the table describing spin lifetime. I heard that there are different players doing spin evaluation playing varying cumulative times during the month under different environmental conditions with one sample of a paddle. My conclusions were: 1. all peel-ply surfaces lose spin at about the same rate 2. don't read too much into whether a peel-ply paddle's rank was 1,2 3, or 4. 3. Selkirk's spray on grit loses spin at a much greater rate than peel-ply surfaces

Love the idea of coming up with standards for paddle reviews, especially spin methodology. I also think it would be useful to take temperature into account. I have noticed that during the colder months, outdoors, my Power Air does not get the same amount of spin or dwell when it is cold.

Something I am curious regarding spin, it is paramount that not 1 month vs 3 months but how many hours of game/drill play is involved. With the golf analogy you may spend more on club outlay but they will last years not months. There are now companies that sell quality clubs for $400 that can last years.

A good rebounder, if your ok with trashing some balls, is to stack cinder blocks to whatever height youl like, and hit against that. It has a much greater energy return when you hit hard against it, and it's quieter than hitting against drywall or a board. Unless you smooth or paint over it though, it will chew up balls. ke

This is a hot topic on some boards. Thank you for addressing it. I suppose the upshot is that we need to replace paddles more often than we’d prefer at this point. Even still, 1k per year for a hobby/sport doesn’t seem unreasonable. I noticed my first release Ruby has dropped appreciably, so I’ll probably replace next month.

Same with mine, certainly in the sweet spot the surface is very smooth now and I have a noticeable drop off and spin potential, kind of disappointing. My paddle also weighs 8.6 with an over grip so it’s a little heavier than I would’ve wanted, With more swing weight than I would really like especially at the kitchen but I love the Feel and at least initially this spin potential was awesome. I came from the Pickleball Apes Energy paddle, which I definitely enjoyed but comparing new paddle to new paddle I preferred the ruby except for the weight.

Thank you for all the great podcasts and reviews. 🎉 I’m curious to get your thoughts on plushness and feel. For a long time I thought this was due to different paddle faces and tech. But let’s be honest the tech is pretty similar these days. After suffering from tennis elbow, I have found what really has more impact on feel is whatever is being used to create the hexagon/trapezoid shape that lays on top of the paddle handle. This can be rigid foam (stiff feel - real feel the ball. More vibrations), stiff Eva foam (less vibration but still feel the ball of the face) soft Eva foam (plush - easy on the arm), plastic, wood (harsh feel), etc… Curious to get your thoughts! Thanks again for your reviews!
@johnkewpickleball

Really good observation, and the composition of the handle isn't something I've put a lot of thought into, as it relates to vibration damping. I do think the handle is part of a chain that includes the surface material, core, weight, perimeter foam, etc., which plays into vibration control. The new Gamma Airbender's rubber neck insert does a good job of removing vibration, from my initial testing

Hi JOHN Let's see if you can help me, I have a big problem with paddles. I currently have Ruby 6.0 to play singles, and it works great for me, it is the best paddle for singles for me, I find it super stable, and I notice that the ball goes where I want. On the other hand, to play doubles, I cannot move it on the net, it feels very heavy and I have little maneuverability. and then I use a 16mm perseus and I notice that I can move it better. Do you think there would be a paddle that can be adapted for both modalities for those things I'm looking for? The Perseus individually I notice that the balls do not go where I want, as it is more unstable. So I'm currently not sure what to do, do you recommend something? I'm also waiting to buy the new Perseus on April 16. but I don't know if the same thing will happen to me as with the old ones, being "gen3" I have very good opinions about them. What can you tell me about all the sermon I have given you? I'm sorry and thank you

Definitely would be very helpful if you can test your Ruby again in a month or two or three. Perhaps it's possible that kevlar has a 3 month spin loss but from that point on the % of loss per month drops significantly? We can only hope. You can confirm : ) I ordered my Ruby on the 6th and it's still in transit - really looking forward to it.

Wow! Fantastic podcast. I have even more faith in your numbers and methodologies. I will be curious if you, Braydon and Chris all determine that the new radar gun does a good job on measuring spin. Regarding loss of spin over time, I wonder if after a bit more testing you can just say in a general sense that if a paddle is made a certain way and with certain materials, here is the slope of spin loss you will generally experience.
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball 5 месяцев назад
Good point; I think that we're close to being able to make generalizations that you can expect X amount of RPM loss over X amount of time for X surface. And I'm kind of hoping that the new radar gun doesn't work out, so I don't have to invest $3k in new equipment 😅
@iugradmark
@iugradmark 5 месяцев назад
@@johnkewpickleball Thanks again. Regarding the radar, I think all it may do is make the time to do the tests shorter if I understand what Chris and Braydon are saying. So if it works, will just validate the work done n with cameras so not sure it is a necessity. Also, I think Chris’s comment regarding the importance of spin numbers is a good one. Are we reaching a point at least for current technology that the spin capabilities are all starting to get grouped at a high enough level that we don’t need to worry about it like we did?

In other words if my budget is $600 per year would 4x $150 paddles (replaced every 3 months) spin better on average than 2 x $300 paddles replaced every 6 months?

Neat! The 8 serves on both sides makes a good amount of sense. I might have to dabble with that a bit. This is something I wish the industry would get better about (grit consistency with RCF paddles). That's also why I think the tests are good to give a general ball park, but shouldn't be an end all be all. At least until companies can guarantee extremely high consistency.

Great question, and the lifespan of a PP core is something that I don't think any of have been paying attention to (outside of core corruption issues). I think that's because there are other failure points that happen before the core goes, like the surface texture, and disbonding issues between the core and the surface layers. But like we mentioned in the video, historical testing of power and pop would be useful

Curious to know what the spin testing would show on the effects a carbon paddle eraser used on a paddle that was never played with? Separately, paying $800 plus for 3-4 paddles a year is absurd. This will be the exception for sure rather than the rule among the recreational athletes. I can't think of any sport played for recreation where that much money is spent on a single piece of primary equipment in one year. I expect prices will come down as more manufacturers continue to enter the space increasing options with relatively fewer competitive advantages between brands and thus driving retail prices down. Lastly, I don't think the Selkirk spin loss is an anomaly. The quality doesn't match the $ paid IMO.

It's all about the peel ply right? No matter what the face material is if it's using peel ply it's going to wear the same as other peel ply paddle surfaces.

It’s the resin that wears down and erodes, did you think that with all the impact and abrasion the ball causes on the face it would never wear out?

To an extent, yes, but there's also the issue of how the resin in the peel ply bonds to the facing materials. The big question when they started using peel ply on 3K woven cloth was whether or not the resin would bond as well to a textured surface versus a flat unidirectional fiber sheet. But it seems to be working just fine
