So in 2001 and 2002, I was an actor in a national tour of South Pacific with Mr. G. I played the young lieutenant that sings Younger Than Springtime. I'm also from Maine. At some point I mentioned the Star Spangled banner ( I can't remember the reason why.) He replied that it was one word, but then went on to say that when he was in Canada, he hosted and sang on a weekly countdown of the hits type tv show. Every week, he had to sing several songs or pieces of songs he barely knew. He said he developed a great ability to come up with a close enough word on the spot when he inevitably went up on the lyrics. He could rhyme almost anything. I liked him a lot. I would sing You've Got to be Carefully Taught to him and then I would sit down onstage while he belted out This Nearly Was Mine. He possessed such a rich, resonant sound. It was a great honor to hear him night after night after night. Though I have a higher voice, I've also had to play Lancelot a couple times and sing If Ever I Would Leave You. I would have Bob on repeat and steal all his phrasings. RIP Mr. G. It was an honor. He was the real deal. Though Elvis may have disagreed, I think he had one of the greatest sounds of the 20th century.
I was at the South Pacific show in Green Bay, WI during the 2002 tour with friends of Robert and got to meet him backstage, after; a dream come true since I was a little girl. He spent the time with me (and my husband) and my host and family were kind of unhappy about it. They stood us up at the restaurant, after. But That was fine because to this day I would not trade spending time with him or the wonderful photo of us together. Nice to see you here. I love your story.
Robert Goulet's voice stood out from all the other American singers of his type, full of character, feeling, distinctive and warmhearted. Singers like Mr Goulet are very difficult if not impossible to replace.
Robert Goulet was my great uncle, he always had a really good looking girl with him every time he came over to my grandma's home , still laugh when I think about the time he hit on my step mom .
Wanted to see this due to Ellen getting bumped from this show, due to Robert singing and forgetting the words to “Memories”, as she talked about it on David Letterman (lol)
Johnny Carson was the GOAT. He reigned at a time when people knew how to laugh and free speech prevailed. People were not so easily offended by the slightest thing and the snowflake generation wasn't born yet! RIP Johnny Carson.
The snowflake generation is the one who grew up during the most economic prosperous time in history and during the rampant capitalist push of individualism.
I read that Elvis Presley didn't like his singing, and that he would shoot at his tv set when Mr. Gouket was singing. I don't know if the story was true. On the other hand I also learned that Robert was very abusive to his wife, Carol Lawrence, good singer in her own performer in her own right, and still alive at 91 years of age. Robert Goulet was a pretty good singer.
I think that second cowboy actually WAS Robin Williams... I can picture him pulling that off... and if you look toward the end I SWEAR it looks like his mustache is coming off!
Johnny and Robert Goulet were cool, as expected, but did a poem about killing a cowboy for being gay really get all that applause? Times have changed, thank goodness. Yeesh. The second cowboy poet was creative and funny.
Did you actually listen to that Poem? He didn't kill him because he was gay he killed him because he married a woman who had him working at a Dude ranch. A lot of real Cowboys look at Dude ranch's as the lowest possible thing a Cowboy can do.
He has great voice maybe better than Frank Sinatra, I was wondering why haven't I heard of him, then I listened to his interview i noticed, he's a bit cocky maybe that's why
I just read an article on Elvis and pricilla said Elvis disliked this singing and said it was too technical. Dissapointed in Elvis thst he would get so upset when bob would come on TV. I think a bit of jealousy there.
Coincidentally, Priscilla and Goulet co starred in The Naked Gun 2 1/2, The Smell Of Fear. Had Elvis been alive he would have rolled over on his grave 🤣
Bob looked so much better before the moustache. He had such a wonderful smile. He most probably should have retired after the age of 65. A slightly better longevity than "rockers". Grace Slick, rightfully so, stated that nobody should be doing rock music after the age of 50, as it is completely embarrassing. :)
@@jackiemiller8652And, ZZ should have hung it up years ago.(They never were that good in the first place. All of their songs sound the same.) I rest my case. Just like The Rolling Stones or OZZY., or Jerry Lee Lewis. Embarrassing.
There was no reason for him to. Didn’t you see his last televised concert in the summer of ‘07? He was in amazing voice. Just a couple months before he passed too, so I’m not sure why you feel he needed to retire. No 1 needs to retire after 65 if they’re doing great at something, esp when it’s their passion.
Don't attempt to roller blade in the street in our neighborhood. Goulet will yell at you and say "Visitors are not allowed to skate in the street"! That's when ol Bob got the finger. He thought he owned the neighborhood. Good riddance Goulet
