This is the most relaxed I ever saw Carson in a setting in which he wasn't hosting. I wish the talk shows were still this quiet and conversational.

I think we can only say that because the 60's shows are lost. The one episode, with Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Judy Carne, George Goebel, Carol Wayne and Robert Wagner (from 1969) is the greatest one, EVER! I would bet the 60's shows blow everything else out of the water, based on what little we have been able to see.

This was filmed at the WLWD(Dayton,Ohio) studios. Phil was a local personality.(this was before Marlow) In Sept or Oct of 1970 my(9th grade) high school science class had a week long outing at a local (Grant)outdoor life science center. The parents of the students were asked to volunteer to be chaperones for the kids at night. Phil Donahue's son Mike was in my class, and Phil stayed with us for one or 2 nights.(I also knew another son Mark). I experienced the dream of many liberal females,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I vividly remember the moment when I felt a shaking and looking up out of blurry eyes and seeing ole Phil saying to me,,, "wake up, time to get up".

I was born in '72 so my memory of everything in this era is often hazy but I truly feel the 70s was one of the last best decades. The best cars, the best movies, the best music, the best clothes that are still often imitated. I love those thick eye glasses and shades they wore. We had both Elvis and Led Zeppelin existing in the same universe. And look at what Mr. Carson is wearing. I couldn't pull that off if I tried.I been re watching movies, documentaries and everything on the 70s just to catch up on what I missed or don't fully remember.

I have to admit, I liked the calm and politeness of TV talk shows back then. I miss Donahue and Carson too, though Donahue I thought was really cool - when he was not having a totally goof-ball show on. The end of these shows signaled the end of the American all-together culture and the start of division and divisiveness that has never stopped.

If I remember correctly, this show aired regularly on WLWI-TV 13 in Indianapolis in the early 1970s. It was still an ABC affiliate at that time. Later in the 1970s, WLWI would switch their name to WTHR, and in 1978 switched to being an NBC affiliate. Mom always watched this show back in the 70s and 80s. It always remained on channel 13.

Carson was spot on about cheating in golf. It's really demoralizing to be playing with good friend who you trust, or some orthopedic surgeon, or cop, etc and see them kick their ball into the fairway or claim they shot par when you know they shot a double bogey. It really ruins the whole day when that happens.

Merv was not even close to being in Johnny's league. That's a ridiculous comment.

He was still in NY then at 6B where Jimmy Fallon does the current show, so I wonder if moving the show to California a couple years later made it more fun and relaxed.

@@KalOrtPor STEVE ALLEN did the show in Studio 6B when he STARTED IT in 1954 !

@@essessessesq I'm aware of who Steve Allen was and that he hosted first, nowhere was that being discussed

@@KalOrtPor Studio 6B was being discussed here in the context of The Tonight Show and Carson and Fallon...Accordingly, it was perfectly logical in the context of a discussion of those 2 topics to toss in the very relevant fact that the show later hosted in 6B by Carson and Fallon is ALSO the very same NBC studio where "Tonight" had its beginning in 1954 as the creation of Steve Allen.

I saw this one in August 1988 when Donahue presented some classics from the 70s (Jane Fonda from 1972 was another one).

Cigarettes ruined Carson's good looks and his health from early on. Here in this clip from 1970 he still has the good looks which would quickly fade over the coming years.

Notice the rotary phone. Back then, people had to even exercise their fingers to make a call. Today, everything is push-button or touch-screen, no wonder we are so damned fat these days.
