You looked away just as the images of Jesus appeared. This song was written by a younger man with an entire life of possibilities ahead of him. Johnny's cover is by a man reflecting upon his life at its end. A finality so poignant thiat his daughter said it sounded like Johnny was saying goodbye, to which he answered that he was. As the story is told, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wasn't enthusiastic about Johnny doing his song, but after hearing Johnny's cover, said that the song was now Johnny's. Johnny's wife June, the lady on the stairs, passed away soon after this song was done and Johnny soon after that.

Johnny struggled greatly with drugs in the early days. He came to Christ in the late 60s and much of his work in the 70s was devoted to Gospel music and spreading the Gospel (hence the film The Gospel Road). He struggled later with addiction to pain meds, but recovered from that too. He ended his life a devoted follower of Christ.

It seems that for Johnny Cash's version of this song, he regrets his distracting excesses, whether it be the things money can buy or substance abuse. As a younger man he had focused on those unimportant and destructive things, and in doing so, missed so much good in his life, and drove away or lost those who should have been most important to him when they were truly in his life. It is a sad tale of self-awareness that comes late in life, and thereby, of regret.

My Most Compassionate K.S.O., I was tearing up right with you. I've heard this cover a number of times. The lyric was originally written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and recorded by them. The lyrics are actually about Trent's struggle with heroin addiction. The original is also powerful, but it pales in comparison to Johnny's cover. When Trent first heard Johnny sing his song, he didn't think much of it. He did feel honored that such an icon would cover his song. He then saw the video and he then knew that it was no longer his song. I know that you know that Johnny and June have passed through the veil. Yes, the blond woman is his mother. Johnny was married before. June was his 2nd wife. They were married for over 40 years. It's needless to say that this song is among my playlist of favorite songs. It never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Again, showing your emotions for such a powerful cover just continues to show your Hunnies that you're human and do have a soul that can be touched. Remember, Heavenly Father has unconditional love for you.

I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. He was my mother's favorite singer. One of my favorite childhood memories is listening to my mother sing to Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" I remember when I first saw the video, I knew he would not be with us much longer. But I was surprised when his wife June Carter Cash, in the video, passed away first. And then Johnny very soon after.

When Johnny Cash did this, his wife was about to have valve replacement surgery for her heart, and his own health was really bad He knew that he was on borrowed time. June ended up dying in surgery soon after the song was made, and Johnny followed several months later. This song was Johnny basically saying goodbye to his friends, family, and fans. It was the last song he did. At the end when he closes the lid on the piano, it's like he's shutting the lid on his own coffin/career. If this song doesn't touch you, then you have no idea what loss, pain, or regret is. When you get old, you will know it well.

This is one of his last videos. Not to long after they shoot the video . Not matter how many times I see this it always makes me cry. It did the same to Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails who wrote the song about his own pain. After he heard this version he said it was no longer his song it belong to Johnny.

When johnny came out with this song he knew his time was coming to an end. I am a big jc fan since the 60s. I know alot about him. But when he shut the piano's key door, that put tears in my eyes. His " big gig " was coming to an end. RIP J.C. the " man in black ". The world was a better place with you in it. And yes, that was his wife behind him in the video. June Carter Cash, R.I.P.

The woman in the recent pictures was his wife, June. The woman in red was his mother. This video was done in Feb. 2003. June came downstairs before the video to see how he was doing because his health was poor. The director asked her to stay on the stair so they could throw a focus on her during the video. June died in May 2003. Johnny died in September 2003. This song is the best song about his life, his addictions, his mistakes, his loves, his triumphs and the ultimate goodbye.......

There's going to be people that feel the original by NIN was better. For the record, I'm not one of them so for those that liked the original better we will just have to agree to disagree. On January 29, 2007 Johnny Cash's rendition of this song was voted the best ever cover version in a poll by BBC 6 Music. It got twice as many votes as other famous covers such as Jimi Hendrix' "All Along The Watchtower" and Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends." The video was so intimate that Cash's management didn't think it should be released, and Johnny was leaning in that direction. According to Rick Rubin, it was his daughter, Rosanne Cash, who convinced him to let it go. June Carter Cash, died later that year (May 15, 2003. Johnny passed away September 12, 2003).

What I think is amazing about this song...is that because of his age and life experience...and that he was very close to the end if his life.. the lyrics take on a completely different meaning. I know Trent Reznor originally wrote the song he was a person who had a heroin addiction suffered from depression so the song was personal to him. But Johnny Cash was also a drug addict...but just that simple lyric..."the needle tears a hole the old familiar sting" I don't think just drug addict...it makes you think how many times has a doctor drawn blood...hospitals fighting illness and just the absolute toll that living takes on a person. Little nuances in the song change when it is someone with that age in their voice sings it. This song just levels me every time I hear it.

That was one of the saddest reactions I've seen. You looked so happy and eager to watch when it started, and when you realized what kind of song this was, it was like you just deflated :(. Understandable, but it was sad to see. You're usually so cheerful. That was his wife, June Carter Cash. She actually wasn't supposed to be in the video, but she came downstairs to check on him (she was not in good shape at this point, mentally or physically, and died shortly thereafter), and the look she was giving as she watched him was too perfect for the moment, so they kept it in.

I never followed NIN, not because I didn't like them, I lost my Dad that year and it took me many years to accept that Dad was gone. It was so hard. The first time I heard this song, I cried probably for an hour or so. Still do when I hear it. Doesn't hurt like when I lost my friend and Dad, but that scars acts up every now and then. Thanks K.S.O. So glad to know there are those out there who still have hearts that can be touched.

This song was written by a relatively young man, Trent Reznor. Nine Inch Nails recorded it, and it was about drug addiction and depression, but Cash took it into a whole new direction, and this is now his song. His wife, June Carter, passed away right after this was recorded, as Johnny did a few months later.

Trent Reznor the writer of Hurt, frontman for Nine Inch Nails and other bands, had perhaps a drug problem or at least depression, so the line that says "everyone goes away in the end" suits Johnny Cash being an older person and everyone has already gone/passed away, but it also means that an addiction or persistent depression or syndrome will drive everyone away, for those around you, no matter how much they love you or care, they can't cope with your addiction or the fear you may hurt yourself through depression

The fact he recorded this months before he died makes it that much more real and painful. The man was a legend and lived a full life full of both trials and successes. Knowing he carried this pain which resonates so much in this song is sad to watch. You got the entire meaning of this song.

Johnny did a cover of this song and it was about how a heavy metal singer had such a horrible heroin addiction. And he went through bad additions himself and that is why he undecided to sing this song. It was awesome. He died shortly after making the video. He was always such a great performer.

This was the last track Johnny recorded a few months before he let earth in September 2003. I am absolutely sure he knew his end was very near. He laid it all out there. Whoever directed this video did a masterful job as well. Johnny was a deep believer and in redemption as well. He knew his faults. Did you catch the images of Jesus being nailed to the cross in the fast edits? My favorite part is the very last few seconds where he closes the piano lid and gently caresses it. His music is over.

This has been up for a while and not sure if someone has pointed this out, the small white house was the one Johnny grew up in. Johnny and June were one of the great Love stories of all time. Shortly after the release of this June passed.... John followed months later. RIP the Man in Black! No singing artist was more real, a great story teller and did it his way.

He sang a song by Vera Lynn ......we will meet again , don't know where don't know when but I know we'll meet again some sunny day, she sung that to the troops in WWII , My dad also recorded that song for a little c.d. my brother and their group recorded , my dad played with Charlie Rich in his early days ....they were in the Air Force together and Charlie made records with Sam Phillips at Sun Records the same label Johnny first recorded with when he got started back in the day so Charlie played Jazz with my dada then Rock and Roll when at the Sun Label then country music later on , Im rambling again , anyhow good reaction Hunny Bunny

I knew you were going to cry with this one. I'm a guy, and it makes me cry. Wasn't that just the most powerful video you have ever seen? I'm not a huge Johnny Cash fan, but he hit it out of the park with this one. The woman that was seen with him was his wife, June Carter Cash. She died shortly after this video was filmed. Johnny died two months after her. But they had a great life together. God bless Johnny and June and may they rest in peace.

This song was written and recorded by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and was originally about a junkie. When he first heard Johnny Cash's version, he cried because Johnny's version was so beautiful and sad and made so much sense for someone at the end of a long life. This was the last song Johnny released before he died, and he intended it almost as an elegy - note that the setting of the video, with the rich deep colours, wine, and fruit, is in the style of what is known as a vanitas painting, a traditional art subject which shows the briefness of physical life and beauty. Johnny's wife (June Carter Cash, who's seen in the video) died a few months before him and he was so in love with her that he basically just gave up the will to continue. June was a member of the most famous family of country musicians, with roots way back in the Appalachian mountains - The Carter family were basically music royalty.

Sadness and regret about things in our past is a human experience. Old age and death calling the meaning of our lives into question is a human experience. That is why almost anyone can relate to this song--at least on an emotional level. We all share these emotions.

This one is deep. A potent Nine Inch Nails cover. This is Johnny's timeless farewell at the end of his life including his acceptance of his mistakes and regrets along the way. When NIN saw this cover, they declared the song to no longer be theirs - it now belongs to Johnny Cash.

I often judge the quality of a song or movie on if they can draw certain emotions out of me. Does it make me cry? Does it make me happy, excited, or pumped and feeling like I could take on the world? Does it give me chills and goosebumps? This song is amazing. It does make me cry. And sometimes, even when I'm not sad, just stressed, finding something to make me emotional actually seems to help relieve some stress.

He passed in 2013. Four months after his losing his wife of 35 years. I think he died of a broken heart. 💔 I knew you would feel this song with your pure soul. June Carter Cash was the woman in the Hurt video with the long dark hair. This was Johnny Cash's wife. She died before him.

He had been released from Capital Records after being with them for years. He was picked up by the producer of Nine Inch Nails and other new grunge type albums. Trent Reznor had written the song for Nine Inch Nails and was very protective of it because it was a self portrait. Once he saw what Johnny Cash did with it he bequeathed it to him. The woman in the Video was June Carter, his wife. She died a week after the release.

His wife June, seen watching him from the stairs, died three months after filming. He died 9 months after the video. He changed one word from the original, changing a crown of shit to thorns. The original song was about Trent Reznor's darkest period of drug addiction and turned into a story about a life without changing more than one word. The video is one of the most powerful I've seen. Still annoyed it lost out to Missy Elliott. Her videos are insane, but don't have this emotional connection. The Johnny Cash museum had been closed for years. His big 1990s/2000 comeback won him Country music awards, but was ignored by country radio. This led to the famous post awards ad thanking country radio. A picture of Johnny flipping the bird (giving the middle finger).

Everyone hurts when they hear the song, everyone can feel his hurt. It's not just you, you hurt when you hear it cause you got a heart. It will not be easier later, even if you've heard it before it will hurt when you play it again, because he is skilled & poured all his hurt out for all to feel & learn from.
