I met Mr. Cash once, in East Lansing, Michigan. In 1995, playing for the Michigan Festival. He came out of his trailer, near the stage on Munn Field - "Mr Cash?" I said. Johnny walked over, and shook my hand. He said "thank you for coming to see me play." I wanted to cut my hand off right there. Best concert I've ever seen in my life.
@@damianmadore514 That's so true. Johnny Cash is now with FATHER GOD.🎉 Johnny Cash is also with his soul mate June Carter Cash. He lived with pain, suffering, and loss. Believe me I know what that's all about. I'm Rain Murphy Jr.
Wise words from an old man, who knew what it means to suffer. And still decides to love, not for pleasure or sex or happiness. He sings about love and he knows what he's singing about, you can hear it that he does, and it gives me everytimes the chills. Wish you a nice journey in the upper levels, you deserve it.
The first time I heard this version I was riveted. All the optimism of the U2 version gone, replaced by tragic longing. It is amazing the level of emotion that this man can summon.
Couple facts: Johnny Cash is so badass that he is his own genre. Mix Country, Rock n Roll, Gospel, Blues, Folk and Rockabilly all into one mixing bowl and you have the genre that is him. Also, every time someone plays Johnny Cash, Justin Bieber goes crying home to his mommy and Boyz II Men turn into men
+Aaron McCleod This reminds me of an Onion headline: "Backstreet Boys become Backstreet Men in backstreet ceremony". The man in black must have been involved.
Sign the royalties over to the man SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL!! He makes it his own! So much so I struggled too place the original! Pure talent and I've only really ever listened to him rest in peace Mr Chash wish I found u sooner
Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson... to name a few of them. They had staying power, and unlike the expectations of the music industry, continued to actually get better with age, like a fine wine. Johnny Cash doesn't just "cover" a song, he internalizes it into his soul and makes it a part of him, and then shares what he learned with the rest of humanity.
@@joshuamoya8062 cant disagree my friend! ;) My list was never, and is never comprehensive. There are certain artists that seem as if they are prophets or angels sent with a special message that they were supposed to give us. How can i call myself a Christian and still call the Jew, Leonard Cohen a Prophet? It makes no sense. God still spoke through this man! But i see God operating everywhere that i can't explain. How we want to to interpret that is ultimately up to us of course. But these people are both put in our history, and in our presence to help us to pause and think a moment before we go down the wrong path. You mention BB King, he is a legend that probably could have been a much bigger legend if he were willing to sell his soul for it. But whatever his struggles in material life, he always kept his eye on the ultimate prize. He knew what was important in the end. He was always trying to teach. God is so much bigger than our thoughts. Go back to a couple of years ago. I was at a department store, where there were two black women, who looked like they needed mechanical assistance. I am saying, they were not just fat, they both looked like death on two legs fat! I am not joking. They were morbidly obese! But you know what, they were not complaining! They walked through that store, praising God for all the good things He had given them, and for how good their lives were. And i broke down in tears! I literally did. In my mind, these women only had weeks, months, maybe a few years left to live? But they knew what was actually valuable, and they were grateful for it. I stood there and cried in that department store. And i am not ashamed to say that.
@@anelladambrosio2513 it`s like talking to a friend. Listening to what he is saying, and now he is gone and we record the old tapes ans listen more carefully. and we realize that we didnt listen or had too much of our own problems to get into it
Original is really great... Filled with strong emotions, but this version.... Johnny is like: Sit down, son, and let me tell you a story... Unexplainable....
Original is shyte Bono is the worst you couldn't pay me to see or listen to u2 play Jonny cash straight murders this bonos like crying while he sings tone a down a bit ya brah
Mr. Cash your body is dust in the ground, but your spirit still lives on in your songs throughout all time. Thank you Mr. Cash for sharing your talent with us.
Hard not to feel emotional yet euphoric at the same time. His voice in general and this song sends chills throughout my whole body. What a true legend...
And, it's weird, Johnny didn't have the greatest singing voice but was amazing at the same time. He could just draw you in with that gravel tone and you knew a hard life was going to color anything he sang.
One Is it getting better Or do you feel the same? Will it make it easier on you now If you've got someone to blame? You said one love One life When it's one need In the night One love we get to share it It leaves you, baby, if you don't care for it Did I disappoint you Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love And you want me to go without Well, it's too late Tonight To drag the past out Into the light We're one but we're not the same We get to carry each other Carry each other One Have you come here for forgiveness? Have you come to raise the dead? Have you come here to play Jesus To the lepers in your head? Did I ask too much? More than a lot? You gave me nothing now It's all I got We're one but we're not the same Well, we hurt each other and we're doing it again You said love is a temple Love the higher law Love is a temple Love the higher law You ask me to enter But then you make me crawl I can't be holding on To what you've got When all you've got is hurt One love One blood One life You've got to do what you should One life with each other Sister Brothers One life but we're not the same We get to carry each other Carry each other One lyricstranslate.com/el/one-ena.html-0
" I can't keep holding on to what you got when all you got is hurt." Truer words have never been spoken. So many people you try to help, but all they have is pain. Sometimes you just need to accept there's nothing you can do. I know this is a U2 song, but Cash's voice just gives it a whole new meaning. One of, if not THE, greatest artists of all time.
Johnny was an amzing singer and had a good personality! I will always remember "The Man in Black" "Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day, And tell the world that everything's OK, But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back, 'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black." ----- J. C
Notharwow " "He beat his wife and left her with child and did almost every drug there is to do." Umm...his wife filed for divorce not Johhny cash, you stupid Johhny Cash hater.
Well Johnny was always with his wife, even when she suffered from illnes until she died. And to the topic of drugs they were some refuge for him, he had a horrible childhood. His brother died and he had some other seriouse problems.
There's something about Johnny's singing that makes me feel a way that no other singer or writer or actor has ever made me feel. He was and still is truly something special
Nice to here nothing but great things about cash .... I'm 50 years old ... The man in black is my second hero in life ... My wife is the first .... We all struggle even are Heroes.. I miss my heroes... Middleman
Ric Rubin's genius gave us the opportunity to listen to this great man adding extra dimensions to these special songs. John was supposed to be a "spent force". Ric Rubin showed that his talent was limitless, and timeless.
Johnny could tell a story so terribly sad, and make it into something so beautiful. A true legend. Even Chuck Norris listens Johnny Cash in polite silence...) RIP JC
I think this is the greatest cover version ever. He shows every emotion effortlessly. Me and my fellow thrash and hardcore fans were just left devastated by his brilliance.
@aussiefaraday"A different power." I totally agree with that. Been talking to my friends about my reaction to watching Johnny's One on YT. They recommended Tricky's cover of Something In the Way. I was like, wooooh, sacrilege. And then I listened to it.
@@thomasborger6548 Thank you. We just cottoned on to how real he was. We heard his latter-era covers and worked our way back. Being real and stripped down was a hardcore aesthetic and Johhny nailed it years ago. I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire. Me and my friends love him.
Johnny could tell a story so terribly sad, and make it into something so beautiful. A true legend. Sensacional! unico perfeito, completo, fantástico! Uaaauu!👏👏👏👏
sometimes when someone else puts their own touch to your song you then see how good of a songwriter you are perfect example here Bono is an amazing songwriter and when you have the man in black cover you then you know you have made it legend of a man
Extacly.I think Travis Ryan (vocalist of deathgrind band Cattle Decapitation and personally my favourite vocalist) gets inspiration from Johnny Cash, for his clean vocals in the song Ave Exitium
It must be such a huge compliment to U2 to have a legend like Johnny Cash chose to cover your song! Sensacional! unico perfeito, completo, fantástico! Uaaauu!👏👏👏👏
A U2 song that Johnny Cash turned into something else. Just like he did with Hurt, and a whole lot of others. For anyone who hasn't listened to one of the last songs he wrote, The Man Comes Around, give it a few minutes of your time. I promise you'll enjoy it.
One of the best covers in the history of modern music, so many involved from U2 to Cash to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers here on back up...true beauty
where are the greatest artists in the world today, The ones i love and respect and love to listen to work and laugh too are few and far between, going to miss all of the artists that passed. RIP to those GREAT ARTISTS THAT I GREW UP WITH.
This song just caught me off guard today and really got to me....We're one, but we're not the same. We get to carry each other. Carry each other. One...this may be the most authentic rendering of this song. I did not even know, that I knew a Johnny Cash song...but this one is worth knowing on a day like today, where the humanity seams to have forgotten the oneness of all. Love the guitar...love that voice.
@Anson Hartzler I agree, Bono has way more emotion in the song than Johnny. I believe in One when I hear Bono sing it, I actually cry sometimes. But not with this version, I like it. But U2'S is better and has more emotion in my opinion
I love Johnny Cash and admit that he wrecked two of my favorite singers with his covers of Personal Jesus and Hurt like he owns those songs now , but I don't feel the same way about this cover. It just sounds like someone is talking out the song One and it's unusually sped up. Does anyone else feel that way about this cover? 🤔
13 years ago today... RIP, Johnny. was half-expecting the Metallica song but I'm still not disappointed. Very nice!!! So sweet and so deep!!! There's nothing JC couldn't do! RIP JC...
Dries Duyck I know. that's why I said I half-expected it. I really can't break down my sense of humor in my comment if you don't get what I mean. I'm just saying that he even made the U2 song something worth listening to, although it would be cool if he covered Metallica.
I think ole Johnny was preparing himself, hurt, cut you down, knocking on heavens door and One. All these songs have a message and he is decoding them in his voice.
Mr Cash, you’ve educated my mind... you’ve taught me the definition of music, lyrics, life, and so much more. You make a cover song sound convincingly like your own but better... thank you 🙏🏼
He has shown the sentiments, and yes the sentimentality, of a man like nobody else, with his choice of songs, his interpretations, and above all his voice. We male humans have so much to learn. In this song (by Bono) there is a verse Johnny Cash says with that voice: we get to carry each other. Yes, to carry each other is not the thrill of love, it is difficult and may be tiring, but it is at the heart of love. Real love starts when one accepts to "carry" the other person. It often dies when that becomes difficult, too heavy. Or, sometimes, boring
+steve knight Johnny Cash may have been labeled a country artist, but if you go back to a lot of the recordings from his touring with "the class of '55", he can sound country, rockabilly, old blues, pop, everything in between. I dont think he could really be labeled as any one genre. Elvis may be the king of rock, but Cash is the king of music.
I love U2, but this song just got out of their hands, it shows the real meaning of it, Johnny's voice gives it that reality of what the song is about, it is one of my favorite cover songs
Amo a Johnny Cash. Es increíble la emoción que produce su voz. Siempre cantó con toda su alma, y es cierto que cuando versiona una canción se adueña de ella.
Beautiful rendition, I do believe he changes the whole meaning of the song, and his voice transmits this idea to perfection. Same thing he did with 'Hurt'.
I will always love this man in black, just as I walk in my blackened state. He actually talks to you through the music, a true conversation that's meaningful and caring. Since my grandparents left to ascension, he's an old soul I can always turn to for needed wisdom and humanity. Someone who cares for you enough to tell the truth to you, as a kind hand guides so too does a gentle voice give a soothing saying. We are one, can you not see with that splinter in your eye? Perhaps you were truly a fool to have passed it by, or never realize that love is real enough and can never die. Love is the word and the word is, love.
